Re: D4 2010

Interesting though, Razor, that you haven't answered the question as to WHY so many senior players were in the two's (i.e. stacked).
I didn't answer the question because I didn't think it had any validity.
But if you insist I can do my best. First of all I'm not sure who exactly you are referring to, but I'll have a guess and see if I can explain.
From last weeks game 1 player was dropped and 2 players went up, 1 to replace and injured player. As the seniors are playing really solid footy at the moment there isn't any need to make changes to the team, hence it is a difficult for players to break into the side.
Other players that you might assume to be senior players have missed a large number of games in a row through unavailability or injury and hence have come back through the 2's. And because of the seniors form have found it difficult to break back into the side.
Also considering 44 players have played seniors for Swinburne this year it is no surprise that most of the 2's players have played seniors at one stage or another.

Is there someone that played reserves that you think should not have, and if so who out of the seniors should have played 2's instead?

Has anyone heard anything about finals venues?
I would have thought that it would have been announced by now considering we are almost a week out from finals.

Great to see some spirited discussion re players and grades. When all is said and done player eligibility for 1s and 2s will be determined after the last round. If it is within the rules then let clubs pick whoever they want in 1s and 2s.
Manningham and Mt Lilydale have had a few hard games while Monash has had a bye and face Chadstone this week. Following another rest in the first week of the finals Monash will be cherry ripe to win and book places in 1s and 2s grand finals.

I'm over the annual NB witch hunt that takes place every year, maybe if they win the flag this year you all might have some grounds then to be criticle, but do agree that MG will win regardless (Swinburne a danger).

Noticed when centering the ball to big JR on Saturday two pair of Monash coaching eyes watching very closely. At least they have a little respect for the opposition and appear not as complacent as some Gryh:)

I didn't say Monash were certainties just that they would be cherry ripe. ie no excuses. Would be quite confident in saying the Gryphs are far from complacent and they will prepare for any/all upcoming games including Chadstone this week. A reason for a successful season so far.

Yep Frootloop I saw that also. Pretty hard for Mr Osborne to conceal his identity!

In the Record the VAFA makes it clear that finals venues won't be set until after the final round of home and away games. They will then consider a number of factors in assigning finals matches to grounds.

F: Allan(Monash) McCallum(Manningham) Marsh(Point Cook)
H.F: Rodwell(Mt.Lilydale) Viola(Eley Park) Wills(Monash)
C: Lucevic(Nth.Brunswick) Wall(Mt.Lilydale) Vercelli(Manningham)
H.B: Woodberry(Richmond) Wilson(Monash) Ford(Nth.Brunswick)
B: Wild(Swinburne) Evans(MT.Lilydale) Conn(Manningham)
R: Baughn(Mt.Lilydale) McConville(Monash) Stuart(Mt.Lilydale)
Extended BENCH: Santacroce(Nth.Brunswick) Bennett(Eley Park) Harrison(Box Hill Nth) Booth(Monash) Moyes(Mt.Lilydale) Pullen(Sth.Mornington)
Coach: G.Finkemeyer(Mt.Lilydale) Assistant: Osbourne(Monash)
Captain: Viola. Vice Captain: Stuart. McConville.
A good side, but I think that Mark Gower from Mt Lilydale has earned a guernsey. Hasn't been beaten in the backline all season and has kicked 8 goals from the backline as well.

Some extras for the bench:
D. Trinchi (Manningham), Duff (Sth Mornington) and you have to slot David Barry-Macaulay (Chandstone) in somewhere just purely for his loyalty to the club.

Was just perusing the VAFA site and noticed finals venues were up (but had disclaimer that could be moved!) Currently we are playing finals at Vermont Reserve. Have no idea about that ground.

Also, been noticing in last few weeks that there have been a few melee's that clubs have been fined for..but no discussion, accusations...

Any idea where it is? I tried google mapping it and got nothing.

Great spot to watch finals, you can buy beer (non vafa ground) and enjoy drinking it behind the glass in full view of the ground.

They have a very impressive trophy room (not cabinet).

Ground was pretty ordinary 2 yrs ago, barely a blade of grass on it and if your a tight arse you can park at the back of it (near the school) and jump the fence.

Any idea what size it is? Can anyone redo the google size examination that was done on all the grounds before the season started??

From memory it is simular to Point Cooks ground maybe a touch wider, it has drought tolerant grass which looks worse in winter. Also has big change rooms and as previously stated a glassed in area to watch from(and drink).

From memory not a happy hunting ground for Mt Lilydale. 20 goal loss in first final a couple of years ago.

what condition is PCs ground in currently?

Its not the greatest its been this year as with most, pretty weedy at the moment with lots of dirt patches BUT still surprisingly firm with all the rain we have had.
Our big brother ground which we will have next year is looking a million dollars, not that that matters this year.

Round 18 Tips

Progressive: 63/83

Box Hill North vs South Mornington - BHN by 100 goals (need the %)
Chadstone vs Monash - MG by 50 goals
Manningham vs Richmond Central - MC by 8 goals
Point Cook vs Eley Park - PC by 1 point
Swinburne Uni vs Mt Lilydale - MTL by 2 goals

Box Hill North vs South Mornington - BHN by 100 goals (need the %)

south need a win and % to get 3rd so it should be a good game dont count them out just yet!

Re: D4 2010

62/78 progressive.

North Brunswick vs Swinburne Uni - 36 points.
South Mornington vs Point Cook - 47 points.
Richmond Central vs Box Hill North - 14 points.
Mt Lilydale vs Manningham Cobras - 8 points.
Eley Park vs Chadstone - 112 points.

66/83 progressive.

Wind and showers this week wont make for good footy to finish up the season.

Box Hill North vs South Mornington - 8 points. Surely a danger game for Souths. Box Hill would have to get most improved this year and if there were no byes could have played finals. They don't seem to be as reliant on Penny as much and sharing the goals around. Tigers still too strong even though playing away and should kick away in the last quarter. One of the Spencers to kick the sealing goal.
Chadstone vs Monash - 190 points. If there wasn't wind and rain forecast I would tip Monash to kick a record margin for the club. Let's hope Chadstone can pull out of their rut for next season. Wills to kick a P.B. 7 goals.
Manningham vs Richmond Central - 56 points. Cobras with a lot to prove and should easily account for a hapless Richmond. Any excuses for why the wheels have fallen off at the snake pit? McCallum to kick a bag and will guarantee a Coleman medal for the pool room.
Point Cook vs Eley Park - 28 points. Ely Park to win on the road and ensure the are playing next week. Even with a loss it's unlikely they will drop out of the 5 but stranger things have happened. Viola has been tipped as CHF for the comp by many pundits on here for good reason and should dominate this game.
Swinburne Uni vs Mt Lilydale - 44 points. Another danger game for the Rams but I have learnt my lesson and wont be tipping against them here. They wont be able to catch Monash on percentage but have had an excellent year. Rodwell, Wall, Stuart, Evans... the list goes on and anyone of them can stand up and dominate on Saturday.

A big game in the reserves this week with Manningham and Richmond battling for 5th position. The winner going through to participate in the finals.
It will be interesting to see how Richmond tackle this game. Will they drop a few down to give themselves a chance of playing finals in at least one grade, or will they try and finish their season off on a good note in the seniors by knocking off one of the top teams?
My tip is Manningham will get up if Richmond don't drop a few back, however if they do I'll tip Richmond.

Anyone else have any thoughts or even care for that matter?

Round 17 Preview

The final five is all but settled save for major upsets…

Razorbacks over Nth Brunswick by 5 Pts (The Green & Golds are undermanned, but still remain a very tough unit to toss at Allard Park. I expect Swinburne to hit North with everything they’ve got and just hold on in a thriller).
Tigers over the Doggies by 91 Pts (I feel that South will be primed for this contest (after a weeks break) and destroy Pt Cook who have not travelled well all season. This fixture hardly could be classified as a derby).
Centrals over Box Hill Nth by 11 Pts (Whilst the Demons will tell you they are a mathematical chance for finals, realistically they have no chance due to the draw and a sub-standard percentage. I do expect them to push the Snakes all the way however, and would not be surprised if they pinched a win).
Rams over Cobras by 16 Pts (Latest rumour is that this match has been moved to Kilsyth due to an unplayable pitch at Lilydale. If this is the case I give the Cobras some chance of an upset victory. However, we are talking of Manningham knocking off a team that had not lost until last weekend and was far from disgraced to that end. Justin Roberts to prove the difference).
Sharks over Synners by 187 Pts (I will err on the side of caution and select under 199.5).

Round 17 Review

4/4 (66/83 Cumulative)

As mentioned already in this column, there will be no grandstand finish in relation to the constitution of the five, however, a slight chance remains that places in the top 5 will change. Box Hill Nth have been the seasons sleeping giants but alas they will rue the fact that they dropped a couple of winnable games earlier in the year. A certain ruckman from the Demons claims they are a chance but the mathematical equation of 424 points (to make up on the Sharks) is about as realistic as Andrew Lovett becoming the next Pope! Full credit to the Demons though and should look forward to 2011 with much anticipation. The Cobras were brave at Kilsyth (of all places), but The Rams proved they are at least the second best side going around with a hard fought win. I expect a similar margin (around 3 goals) when the two teams meet again on Saturday week in the Qualifying final. This ensuing fixture is not a fait accomplithough as South Mornington have an outside chance of making up just under 8% (or 106 points) if they smash The Demons, or just hope the Snakes pull off a major upset over Manningham. Both are most unlikely…The Razorbacks are the other team worth a mention, they too will be lamenting a mid season slump as they need two unlikely results. Firstly they need to beat the Mountain Men, who have only been toppled once and secondly they require the Sharks to lose to Pt Cook which is at long odds given the stakes. The only concern for Monash is the possible lack of a contest leading up to the finals. Only two more sleeps

Round 18 Preview

Sorry Terry we'll have to settle this in the finals...

South over Box Hill Nth by 5 Pts (I’ve changed my mind three times already, but the fact remains that South have a chance at third if the Cobras lose. The Demons will fight all the way, but South are too good a side to let this slip. Ben Price to continue his excellent season for the visitors).
Monash over Chadstone by 168 (Like my good mate Terry, I suspect Monash will not break their record score and win by 200 plus as they are likely to rest players as the day progresses. Expect the fringe players such as Mike Davies and Rob Fletcher to fire as they fight to hold their spot for finals. For Chadstone, 2010 is another season to forget Not sure what the solution is at Jordan Reserve, but I wish them luck).
Manningham over Richmond by 41 Pts (Round 18 often provides an upset, but don’t expect the Cobras to slip in this one. Sam McCallum is one of the most destructive players in the comp and will see the home side through comfortably).
Sharks over the Dogs by 8 Pts (This is the potential upset as Pt Cook have been tough to beat at PCO and would be quite proud of that fact in their inaugural season. Too much is at stake for Eley Park however, and they should prevail in a thriller. Chris Marsiglio to be best afield).
Rams over Razorbacks by 21 Pts (St James Park is arguably host of the match of the day and although the ground may be a bog, I expect a fine contest. Swinburne will certainly make Mt Lilydale earn it and may pinch a win, but too many guns like Roberts & Rodwell will ensure the Rams long trek home is enjoyable).

Good luck to all

Quasi

Vermont Reserve 146m x 110m

East Caulfield Reserve 142 x 102 (Not convinced the goals line and face each other at this ground)
Mt Lilydale is 155 x 123 - Feels like about 328m long in the slop at the moment
Manningham is 155 x 117 -
Whitehorse Reserve - 132m x 105m
Citation Reserve - 148m x 122m
