Don't get me wrong, I'm always up for a spot of 'Hang shit on Essendon', but does this include those shots where the Big Bad Bolt misses the goal completely?
unfortunately not. I'm sure someone has made a Youtube clip of them though, which would be well worth a look. Butcher was the same.

It's all about the ball drop, it's where a lot of technical issues happen.
Buddy and Daniher are good field kicks and both beautiful on the run. Because they don't think about anything technical when they kick it
Daniher needs to look down at his leg as he kicks it like Roo did for a while until he was dropping it properly

Agreed. Said this many times over but the head needs to be over the ball at ball strike with eyes on the ball all the way. This looking up at ball drop is flawed. Line up where the ball is to be kicked and then keep eyes over the ball. Tennis, golf, soccer...head and eyes over the ball.

I've got a theory - if you're 200+ you're going to struggle to play forward because you can't kick.

Looking at the top 50 AFL all-time goalkickers...only one is 200+, Paul Salmon. Closest others are Richo at 197, Buddy 199, Madden 198. And it's not like Richo and Buddy haven't have their accuracy issues.

Ruckmen are notoriously poor kicks, whether set shot or field. Theory is specifically because of their height - there's a lot more required to get their kicking right. Even if they're reasonable kicks, they often look ungainly when doing so.
Maybe, but i wouldnt consider Darcy Moore a bad kick at goal when having a shot and hes over 200. Tom Lynch kicks alot of goals not quite sure on the accuracy. You wouldnt pick these guys to shank it out of bounds on the full like you could possibly with Daniher. Hawkins has improved at 198cm, Ben Brown ive always considered an above average set shot goal kicker he would be ruckman size.

Also, with the top 50 goal kickers, of course there are going to be barely any 200cm players, id say 200cm forwards only became normal sometime after 2009 season when Kurt Tippett was dominating, there were rare cases with Salmon but there are definitely more 200cm forwards right now and the fact forwards dont kick as many goals these days is the reason for that.

I think more what he was getting at is that taller players are more likely to stuff up the ball drop

Hard to find the balance between taking the fun out of his game and him ending up a stressed out joyless player like Cloke was at the Pies. But I do think he needs to be more serious when it comes to his routine.

The media pile on is a bit silly but he clearly lost his way on the weekend.

Lol, Cloke has had more than a decade to fix his kicking, and poor Daniher has to get past the handicap of listening to Matty Lloyd bullshit on all day.

He'll be a champ in 2 years. He is already leading their forwardline, unlike one D Moore...
Kind of to be expected given Daniher has had 2 more years in the system. Flog.

i don't mind him missing as much....the fact the arseh*le is always laughing etc and not taking it seriously is what gives me the shits.

I see the laughing as a natural reaction for him in a situation where he is the spotlight. I know when I've had the spotlight put on me (whether good or bad) I tend to react in the same way. Doesnt mean he doesnt care, exactly the opposite, its just his coping mechanism.

Hope he excels going forward.

each to their own

each to their own
right, each to their own opinion on a forum is fine, but it's not fine for footy players to have different coping mechanisms!

Very important our players enjoy their footy. I'm glad he has a laugh out here. Everyone else on earth has a laugh at work.

It's a game of footy ffs. He was laughing at the ridiculousness of what happened, not rolling around pissing himself at the fact he missed.

He works his arse off on it but I think needs to get another full time kicking coach, don't think he's had one since Lloyd left.

A bit of fun is fine, despite what guttercrawling, sneering pieces of shit like Damien Barrett say.

well he either isn't taking it seriously or he is indeed just a shit AFL player.

you pick one.

this is the 4th year of this garbage

Geezus **** - way to not have the slightest clue.

Agree.

Especially when the midfield works their guts out to get the ball down there.
they really don't. our midfield is rather lazy and Joe tends to have to take some good grabs to get shots on goal.

on their way to being star CHF's, Buddy and Riewoldt had these games.
Im cool with him smiling and keeping his work rate up in other areas until his kicking consistency gets there.

I will take his 6 behinds and 100% work rate over 4 quarters over Boyd's in and out of game presence and poor kicking.

You may argue he lost us the game on the weekend. He also won us the game on Tuesday.

dont believe anyone, or least from what i have seen said daniher lost essendon the game.

The whole team played like shit, not just him. Did not deserve to win it from the start to finish.

But at the end of the day when you are not kicking goals as a key forward you are going to draw criticism especially when you kick 1 from 9 shots.

autopsy thread on our board. Enough posts about Daniher's goals transposing to goals = win for us.
Its quite amazing really, given the leadership Joe has shown in the last 2 years and how quickly he has allayed any question he will be an AFL footballer.

I'm not sure I'd be happy. Jack Riewoldt was criticised by all for getting emotional about the game. He let his frustrations out rather than walking around with a big grin on his face though. He worked on this area of his body language, and has become a better player and leader for it.

Joe needs to stamp the smilies out of his game.

It's not great reading for Joe.

Having said that, he clearly had a shocker on Sunday. Prior to that he was 12.10 (55%). Hopefully there's not many more days like that.

Totally different - potting the **** out of your teammates and walking around like you're about to burst into tears is a bit different to the odd smile. It can affect your teammates confidence, especially when you're a leader like Riewoldt naturally is.

From the way the coverage has been the last couple of days you'd think Daniher was walking around lolling for the entire 2.5 hours.

He had a bit of a smile with Pig and smiles a bit after a goal or behind.

It's just the way he is. After the ****in shithole Essendon has been for the past few years, more than happy for him to have a bit of fun and hopefully he's enjoying himself and not taking it all too seriously when he has a bad day. Overall he's a very hard trainer and preparer so there's no issue with him not taking his career seriously.

Not to mention he's having an awesome year. Maybe it just works for him.

Joe's got a long way to go to be considered an elite key forward like these guys :D

I guess it really depends who they are, some players probably have longer/ shorter arms than others the same height probably effecting ball drop.

No doubt Jack was emotionally invested in the performance of the team.

If essendon members are happy with Daniher laughing and giggling as he sprays kick after kick, then that's all that matters. Personally, I'd be filthy if one of our players carried on like that.

He's an amazing field kick so potential is there and he's getting plenty of opportunities which is critical. If he were only having 2-3 shots a game and sub 10 touches I'd be more concerned.

Obviously it's an area he needs to work on and one that can be addressed. Much prefer him need to fix his kicking than work out how to get the ball.
