Knowing them, they will still be making fun of our bottom 6 finish last year, and we might be still bottom 6 this year with our confidence shot from last year.
Last year we were cruelled by injuries - middle part of the season we constantly had several key players out, as one recovered, another would get injured - then there was the CM business. We had legitimate reason for having a down year.

And this year Gibbs hasn't really played a big part for us to get where we are so really we could have gotten by with him - and we'd have another two first round draftees on our list - and maybe Rozee as well.

GWS were in a tricky position as I don't think they had the points to grab Kieran Briggs if we bidded on him. They gave up a very good pick to us for little, but it ensured they got the guy they wanted, especially since they need another ruck to develop also.
They had the points for Briggs.
If Adelaide bid on Briggs they use pick 28 to match and that left them with there next pick at 52.
They rated Hill so the pick swap allowed them to get him with our 24 and they got Briggs with 52
They use picks 28, 52 and 2019 2nd which could have been 22-24 to get 2 plays tipped to go in top 30 of a strong draft.

I think this is one of those situations where we probably want Briggs but were never going to get him so did the next best thing and extract maximum value out of GWS for not bidding.

I want Grundy but when out of contract. He is not the difference next year. Would try and turn pick 1 into a couple of picks in the top 10 if possible along with pick 19 and also trade out some players to possibly get another pick or two. If we can get 4 or 5 picks in the top 25 we would be in a very strong position for trade and draft options.
Shoulda done this last year in a strong draft not this year .

I had the same thought. Better late than never.
What if we do 1 and 19 to GC for 2 and 14. GC get first pick and take Rowell and qe have Anderson (who looks like one we would like)

Then 14 and 20/1 for BG, as we no longer have pick 1 so the peer pressure on Collingwood to demand it drops

Sounds good. But don’t think Collingwood would accept it or gc but good plan

If you've got pick 2 sitting in your back pocket, and are chasing a contracted Brodie Grundy, Collingwood will have no interest in a late first and a future first. Unfortunately.

It also gave us some fun times later in the draft - we got Carlton's pick 64 (AND their next year's 5th rounder), immediately before Geelong so we could get Sholl from right under Geelong's nose (they had the pick immediately after Carlton's). The look on Scott's face was delightful at the time.

As much as we're still far away from crediting that as a successful pick, it is currently looking like a rather inspired choice. There is something about him.

I think GWS' pick was 23 if not factoring those in so pick 19 got pick 19 + 23 so it made the trade even more nuts.....but they probably didn't think Carlton would have finish bottom in consecutive years, hence it made this trade very good for us (similar to the Gibbs trade) all because they finished last.

Oh they most likely did think Carlton would be terrible. It was probably more hush money so to say seeing they evidently didn't want us to bid on Briggs (and not only did we have that reputation, but at the time, Rucks were a very vulnerable position on our list).

It was a gamble that paid off for GWS as they got 2 extra players on their list before they had a bid on Briggs.

I suspect Fagan himself was probably told to get it done by the Board to correct an irritating iconic injustice from way back when we should have been able to draft Gibbs as a F-S.

Fagan coming from outside of SA and with a rugby background probably wouldn't have given two hoots about getting a near retiring Gibbs back for the price Bloos had set.

Not exactly. Probably more to do with overrating where we were at list wise, and wanting the missing piece for a premiership.

As said. I'm not that critical on the Gibbs deal. Better to not die wondering.

Nah. The question is? Will Grundy be the difference in a flag next year? No. Do I want him at afc? Yes. Best waiting till out of contract end of 2020 as a RFA. We wont pay anything as a RFA I believe unless they match. They don't have salary currently. Front load his contract to stop them from attempting to match. I want Luko. I believe Jenkins and Afc have fallen out and they will/have come to a mutual agreement he is being traded end of the year. That leaves Fog and Berg. Pretty inexperienced pair. Not sure what's going on with Walker. Seems permanently injured or almost done. We really need another key forward next year. I would trade with 3 clubs for our needs. North, Melbourne and Gold Coast. North are going to trade out their top end quality in Higgins, Ben Brown etc. They hold pick 6 currently. If they could trade themselves into a position to get pick 10 as well. I would then offer them pick 1 for pick 6 and pick 10. Then I would trade Pick 6 to gold coast for Luko. I would offer Knight as they need experienced players as well as picks. This would give gold coast picks 2 (which they currently hold) plus 6 and 10 and Knight. We lose pick 6 and and Knight for Luko. Luko, Fog and Berg 2020 onwards as key forwards. Gold coast would likely only trade Luko if he told them he is leaving when out of contract end of 2020. That leaves pick 10 and 19(carlton 2nd). Would use pick 10 on the best mid with speed and composure. Pick 19 i would use with the Jenkins trade and want pick 11 to 13 for 19 and Jenkins. Melbourne would be a good club to deal with as they need a Jenkins to help Sam Weideman with Hogan gone. Bulldogs or Saints other good destinations. Would then look for best key back trade or draft with pick 11-13 as we need cover for Talia.

Who do you think went to who?
Adelaide asking Gws for something for not bidding?
Or gws being pre-emptive 'take this and give us that and don't bid'?

No intelligent experienced currently employed coach would ever entertain the Carlton job. Its a coach killer. It is the worst coaching job available in the AFL. thats a saying a lot when there is a vacant job at the Roos and potentially Saints.

Lyon is using it for leverage to get a contract extension with Freo.

How dumb are Carlton posters? We want Clarko?

FFS It would have to me like $2M a year for 5 years guaranteed for starters.

In any case Clarko would never do it, unless he wants to retire within 5 years.
If clarko wanted an early retirement package he signs the 5 year deal at 2 mill a year, Carlton fail to win more than 5 games across 3 years, clarko gets sacked and is paid out 4 mill.

There is legit money to be made if a coach wants it, for very little work.

Well there is maybe 5 if that coaches that could command a $2M/year for 5 years. Clarko, Simpson, Horse, Scott and Roos.
The logistics of breaking contracts etc etc would need to be explored.

If its to set up their retirement its brilliant to undertake. The first 4 would have absolute rock solid job security for at least 3 years and they are probably currently being paid well.

Im also not sure they would put little work into the role probably because of their professionalism and their brand. But maybe they would put in less work than what they are currently doing at their respective Clubs. Still I doubt that as well.

The rest of the candidates are coming much much cheaper than that.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if SOS explored those first 5 I mentioned, they would be the pick of the crop. As to their availability thats another issue.

SOS needs to win back his supporters here, he is I am sure going to go after someone big and from left field, or at least try.
