While the Josh Hill move worked very much in our favour, I don't want to be trying that too many times.

JON, Morton and Bennell are recent spuds we've taken a punt on - so 1 from 4 ain't bad, but I think the focus should be more on the players who will genuinely improve our list.

Can we start this thread over with no talk of Betts? Terrible idea, even before considering the money involved.

On Ellis, he's a good player (almost BOG in 08 grand final), just injured alot.... wouldn't be against it if it was on small coin.

Rookie pick x 2 and pick 88 (with Melbourne paying part of his salary).

Shouldn't we be saving our money for the mass re-signings next year (NN, Darling, Gaff, Hurn, Kennedy)?
Wouldn't hurt to renegotiate a couple of those and front load them next year

WC will target FA players they think fill a need in our team and if, after filling all of the spots on the list, will adjust salaries upwards if they have under spent. They will look at throwing extra bucks at our current players who are prepared to front load their existing contracts and create some additional space in next years salary allowance to throw at next years re-signings, trade targets, FA and so on.

This is my thinking.

If we have so much space, why burn it on a player we don't need and risk losing a critical cog to our playing list.

If we can, re-contract our young stars now and make the offers substantive. Darling and NN especially will have clubs throwing massive offers at them.

What's this about Waterman?

Just a caller suggesting he's a top three pick next year and then goes on to say Yeo wants out of Brisbane that much that he'd risk the PSD.

Luckily i read this before posting the link from the AFL website. Sounds like we are into him and I'm not against it. At the right price of course

Coledhino - I don't think you've thought enough about the long term opportunity cost of Betts. Even if he just cost $300k/year for 2015-2017, that's nearly a million dollars over three years which could have been spent on attracting (or keeping!) other players. What happens if one of our midfield prospects comes good next year but wants to leave for a more attractive contract?

This year - sure. Next year onwards - I don't think that's accurate, and even if it seems that way now I don't believe it's worth the risk given that we don't really need Betts.

He will be on the slighly above average AFL base wage in those years. Providing he is in the best 22 whch he will be (he is 100 times the footballer Josh Hill is) then he will be a welcome addition. Im confident he will snag 30-40 goals for us and most importantly apply the defensive pressure Hill wont.

Say what??

Hill does a lot of work off the ball.

Hill applies defensive pressure, Betts has no great history of applying defensive pressure.
