Mean likely assistants are happy where they are & I'm sure WC would like a steady old hand behind tbe scenes

Ok thanks. I hope he can find some good assistants to back him up but really its the clubs doing for leaving Woosh in charge of the decision as to whether he remained coach for way too long imo. Simpson is now behind the 8 ball on working with the draft staff to get the kind of players he wants to suit his ideas and for him to recruit assistants. I hope this doesnt turn into a monumantal f-up...[/quote]

Your are right , but he's been around and is obviously respected , so I'm sure he would have a few names up his sleeve
If he got Belly , that would P--- the Dorkers off big time , brilliant

Yes i agree he would know some people but if they have all re-signed with thier current clubs for next year already because we've left it way too late to organize anything, then that would be bad management imo.
I think it would be a good thing if we could get P Bell to sign on as mid coach or another role to assist Simmo.

I don't understand how we'd get Yarran without giving up our first (and getting back something).

I doubt our second and a fringe player will get it done.

Also on Yeo - Brisbane posters keep stating they won't use their 41, let alone our 40. So if that's true, we are effectively offering nothing.

Then we should take 41 and Yeo for 24.

I think Peter Bell would be a great addition to the coaching panel.

Typing in an airport ....

Meant to be "what" not "wag"

Different issue.... He's not worth 11&12 .... which was my point ....

What do you think he is worth?

I would be rating him work anywhere from 7-12.

Either way there is this belief that Yarran can be prised loose.

always appreciate your insights bondy.

without knowing everything that's going on at carlton i'm a bit surprised that we're still focusing on yarran to the point that he may start agitating for a change of scenery (or maybe i'm extrapolating too much here?)

i'd have imagined that the gulf between what the blues would ask for and what we would be prepared to offer would make for a fairly short conversation (or possibly the eagles really do rate him as something quite special?)

I just think 2 Top 12 picks is a lot for any player. Obviously quality of the draft may alter that.

My original point was we just got Wellingham for 16. So the idea of Shuey for 11 AND 12 rates him as twice the player (and then some) that Wellers is. I don't reckon that's right.

If he demanded a trade this year I reckon we'd want 1 or 2 .... but if he had demanded it we might end up having to settle for a single Top 12 depending on who wanted him .... that's just the reality of trading ...

Can't believe Brisbane wouldn't use 41. They're losing a heap of players and not looking like getting any back at this stage.

I'm sceptical too.

But potentially there could be a way: a pick for Doherty from the blues, 30 from port for polec, 18 for longer, mcguane for free, that academy pick from today, pick 7, pick 25, a rookie upgrade or two. That's 8/9 already. I don't know how many they are losing.

Good point. Justin Clarke will be upgraded but I don't think there's any others in line.

Not sure where the 3rd round starts, but if you look at the players we've drafted with pick 30 or later (not counting rookie upgrades) it's actually a pretty even spread:

Year | # | Player | State
\1999|41|Kane Munro|VIC
\2000|36|Jeremy Humm|VIC
\2000|45|Trent Carroll|WA
\2002|37|Brent Staker|NSW
\2002|53|Adam Selwood|VIC
\2004|37|Mark LeCras|WA
\2004|44|Mitch Morton|WA
\2004|57|Brad Smith|WA
\2005|34|Matt Spangher|VIC
\2006|43|Tim Houlihan|VIC
\2006|50|Will Schofield|VIC
\2006|80|James Thomson|WA
\2008|36|Ashley Smith|VIC
\2008|52|Jordan Jones|VIC
\2010|62|Jacob Brennan|WA
\2012|59|Adam Carter|WA
\2012|60|Mark Hutchings|WA
\2012|45|Brant Colledge|WA

Tally:

9 WA
8 VIC
1 NSW

Victoria is 2 and a bit times larger than WA.

It's hard to rate someone off their trade.

As that's just what is on offer. We may have landed Wellingham for pick 20 if that was what we had available.
It's hard to judge.

Btw your quip is wrong.

I'd prefer to stick with 40 as our final offer.

Each to their own.
We should certainly be playing hardball, Ideally we can throw a player in.

Just on a side note I don't think the draft is as shallow as some are implying. After the obvious picks continuously mentioned in the top 20 there are still plenty of guys who have appeal;

Cripps
Garlett
Robertson
Jansen
Tsitas
Kennedy-Harris
Bourke
Jones
Miller
Hartung
Impey
Merrett
Dumont
Battersby
Wilson
Spina
Knight
Templeton
+ Talls and ruck stocks
+ Mature age pick ups

Naturally plenty of guys wont turn out, but I reckon there is enough upside to use draft picks deep in the draft.

Lucky for us we hold all the cards.

If Melbourne wanted him it would cost pick 2.

Moot point anyway as he isn't going anywhere.

With all the players they have leaving they will need as many draft picks as possible

Best part of the whole thing....

Any dratee (well most ) is going to go through the whole transition/injury/ will they make it process. Shuey is a known quantity, who I think still has massive upside.

I reckon Yarran is on the table. But he is contracted and Carlton can't seem too keen to trade him or it will look like they are desperate to get him off their books and reduce their bargaining power and his value. They have a month trade window to sit and wait to see if any interest comes before they quietly shop him around...
