Yeah - I don't think we will take a risk with our first pick, and **** is risky. We have recently shown a bit more of a tendency to be speculative with second and third round picks (Karpany, Main, Weedon, Newman, Notte, Swift) and I really think that inconsistency is a big red flag for our recruiters with picks in the top 15.

Plus Simpson has seemed to reiterate the need for 'IQ' and players willing to put their head over the ball and contested-focused players, and I don't think he (or Woosha) had once mentioned anything about the need for more dash/breaking of lines/flair. Cockatoo is big bodied, but doesn't scream of the kind of diligent, straight-laced, Priddisesque coachability that you get the impression Simpson wants.

Also the whole injury cloud is another risk. For these reasons I think we will prioritize those mentioned above over Nakia 3315.

Yeah fair enough, that's what I thought you meant.

A few on here who suggest they have some inside info (which we know is obviously 100% reliable) reckon that Cockatoo is the one we're after, which I thought is pretty interesting if true. Perhaps Simpson has identified the conservative pattern of our drafting as a weakness and is looking to break the trend. Perhaps they rate Cockatoo extremely highly and believe he is a bargain at 11. Those two sets of circumstances would be plausible explanations, but yes agreed it would be out of character for WC.

That said, I hope we do take the punt, assuming Pickett is off the table.

Because Sheppard over Jetta?

Or we err towards WA kids?

Many thought it was a risk we took Naitanui over Rich. Many thought it was a risk to take Judd after his shoulder problems (although that was a long time ago).

I'd suggest Sheppard, Sheed, Masten and Gaff were all top 11 picks that were quite conservative in recent times.

2001 was a long time ago in fairness.

Seems cockatoo has the traits we are after big bodied mid who can win their own ball and good kicking to go with a hawks style game plan .

OK my crack at a good draft without hoping for ridiculous sliders:

11. L Duggan (HB / mid)
32 T Miller (mid/fwd)
51 N Dummond (mid/fwd)
69 Caleb Daniel (small fwd)
87 Sinclair (ruck / fwd)
105 Waterman (mid)

RD N Abbott (utility), A Creeper(kp back).

What's Drummond like?

We have one rookie pick as do you mean we should delist an existing one?

He has a lot of upside with his size and kicking ability ! Do you think he could transition into the midfield ?

Yeah mate he does and can play midfield, in the u18s last year he played thrue the Midfield more as the kolo bro's held the backline up, this year Tasmania had a lack of talls and he was forced to play as a tall attacking defender which he does well for his size,

I just checked out footage of Nathan Drummond, pretty impressive - plays a bit like Shuey. I wonder why he's considered a 30+ prospect.

I don't mind the Shuey comparison, not as good a kick though.
There are a few things that hurt his draft standing IMO

He's an overager - Other than just being a year older and theoretically having less development this could help explain why he was able to dominate draft camp so much with an extra year of training under his belt. That said he's still clearly an impressive athlete.

His production - Wasn't particularly high during the champs which might count against him even though he's done very well at TAC level.

Athlete Vs Footballer - Some people look at him as a bit of an athlete rather than a football player but to be honest i don't think he's too bad in that regard.

Size - At 181, he's small enough that people will have concerns about his ability to play inside at afl level.

I think the overager is the big one, I personally think he's a bit underrated but not horribly so.

Yeah I think your point about being overage is a good point - I forgot that for a second. And agree, Shuey without the elite kick is what I was thinking.

I wonder if he could slide as far as 51 - that would be pretty fantastic.

Yeah I mean like I said it's not just the conservative thing, it's that Simpson seems to rate hardworking unfashionable types (based crudely on him talking up McGinnyy and Priddis), and doesn't give me the impression he cares much for x-factor or swervability.

so it's not so much even a matter of me thinking they'll be put off by Cockatoo because he's a risk, but more that they simply might not rate his attributes as highly as we do on BF

Jordan Jones over Walters is one that gets me.

We have taken risks/reached in the second round for some reason more than anywhere else recently, but have tended to be rather safe with our first.

This also applies to the fact we tend not to use many draft picks in general, and instead upgrade average rookies like Hams instead. Which in itself is inherently conservative.

A feeling in your gut that you get from ****?

Cockatoo/Duggin + Rainbow would be a dream come true.

Rainbow is the player i want the most with our second rounder. His kicking skills are sublime and could become another Hurn but with more versatility.

Chuck Gov Jnr in as a rookie or a third rounder and i'd be laughing.

I rate Sheed, but in the games I saw I believe Acres looked more comfortable at the top level. Perhaps I overstated when I said he was at a higher level already but I think it's fair to suggest they had a similar output this year, with Acres possessing more potential.
My prediction is for Sheed is for him to reach a similar level as say Chad Fletcher (not suggesting they are similar players, just a similar output) whilst I expect Acres to reach a similar level to say David Mundy.
awsome so sheed will be all australian and win a GF medallion

I share this dream. Hopefully it's not too unrealistic
