Been delisted by Melbourne, has a lot of talent and is still only 24, perhaps an opportunity to Moneyball it again and pick him up as a rookie?

We've been deficient in HFF, just gives us another option, a bit more depth and some insurance. Knighter may not hold up, Pettard is probably a similar type to him, Azza is a bit more of a stronger body type, hard leading forward.

Melbourne are shocking at development, at 24 we could still get a fair bit out of him. Wouldn't cost much and could reap huge rewards.

Thoughts?

Did you see his injury list ? He's gone under the knife more times than one of those back packers on Hostel !

Errr... Was not aware of his injury issues. Turned me off it now a little!

Then again, a rookie pick wouldn't be much risk, if there's no mature agers worth giving a shot as a rookie we could always take him with our last spot on the rookie list.

Fair point if fit but I'd be more interested in Bennell than Pettard.

Meh he wouldn't be a bad pick up as a rookie but (without derailing this thread) what about Cook? Number 10 draft pick, under 18 all australian etc.

Don't think Cook has shown much, general view is he's done SFA since his AA selection as a junior and looks to be another botched pick by Melbourne. I haven't seen much of him personally but that's what I hear. I only suggest Pettard as he is cheap and looks to have a bit of talent to work with.

Think he'll find a senior list spot, somewhere. Doubt we could depend on him being available as a rookie

Also, if we are flooding our rookie list with mature bodies largely as insurance, it doesn't make much sense for us to put a highly injury prone bloke on there

I don't mind Ricky Bobby, think he has a bit to offer. Good for a Rookie spot IMHO.

Good player whose probably just found himself at the wrong place; surely you don't need him with Knights and Edwards?

Pass, there's a reason why Melbourne have cut him. Just like other players they have and the same with Port Adelaide. No point keeping guys that play well once every 6 weeks. Absoloute nuisance value to your club regardless of their talent.

When you play well even once, you show some sort of potential.
Why can't we teach him how to play more consistent footy?
i'll back our coaches in, they've turned around some very maligned players in the past.

VFL Standard footballer with a bit of ticker.

I liked watching him because he had a crack but at the end of the day he is not good enough. would be filthy if we wasted time on him.

I'd rather Bate, more consistent than Pettard, reasonable height (191) plays forward or back, not sure why the Demons delisted him to be honest, maybe he cant kick? I'm not sure havent watched him close enough, maybe it because he is a Redhead?

Was some talk that Petterd is a touch lazy and not prepared to do the work required if there is any truth to this then we shouldn't even bother with a rookie list spot. Best bet if he doesn't go in the draft is to invite him to train and have a look at him and his work ethic and if ok look to rookie list him no harm in that we tried it with Maric he did the work got a chance and wasn't good enough I like that approach.

We've gone out and acquired a couple of players for his position with O'Hanlon, Edwards, Edwards, Knights, Jackson, White all capable of playing that half forward role. Of these, Aaron Edwards, Jackson and White are all not much more than depth players, and to get Petterd would do beyond depth and become list clogging.

We need to leave room for better-than-average draftees to come in and replace these blokes in a few years, getting Petterd would be superfluous to our needs at this stage and waste a spot on the list.
