My biggest worry is Naughton.

He was letting blokes run past him. That's not the astro we know.
It may not have been apparent, particularly if you were watching on TV, but Naughton was constantly interfered with, either being held or blocked off the ball.
He should have kicked a bag just from free kicks if the umpires were doing their job properly. Although he was beaten tonight the tactics applied to do so were certainly not within the rules.

I think this game should be scrutinised, and at least one of tonight's umpires should be having an extended break from AFL level duties.

Did you watch Smith today? Honestly yeah he’s a s*t kick for the most part (Although was pretty good today) but does anyone who criticised him actually go to a ****** game? His work ethic compared to every other campaigner on our list is off the charts. We don’t have a midfielder who gut runs like he does, not many clubs would. The bloke tries his ******* guts out and yeah he shanks a few but can you blame him? Smith was probably our best midfielder tonight, bar maybe Libba, let’s look elsewhere to lay the blame
I am not doubting his work ethic at all, can you point out where I said that? Felt like a direct swipe at me when I was simply pointing out his kicking.

He is by far our best runner I agree. But there was a stat posted the other day that only one of his 40 kicks inside 50 actually resulted in a mark by one of our players. A league worst percentage out of however hundred players in the league, that is very damning. Where Miers from Geelong actually has half of his kicks marked by his own forwards. If we wants to be a weapon, he needs his disposals to become weapons. Blindly kicking to no where is why he has a lot of clangers per game. And some people here want to see more defence. His hot patch a few weeks ago shows what he is capable of when he gained a few tackles, half decent ball use, combined with his running. Been quiet on the defensive side the past two weeks. Running is just one attribute. Needs to bring it all together more consistently.

Peak Dickson wouldn’t get his hands on it in this system. The only thing worse than our set shot accuracy is our insistence on bombing it long to the square instead of strategically entering 50
Yeah I had a good think about this tonight, I kinda get why we bomb long - it was obviously a directive to try and not do that, and every time we didn’t it resulted in 15m sideways kicks until we literally just turned it over or kicked it into the man on the mark and then watched it race away.

Honestly if I was 70m from goal and my options were a sideways 15m pass to Keath or even flipping Macrae tonight, I’d turn back towards goal and boot the ****ing thing as far as I could

Can anyone remember what our greatest asset was in 2016? Contested ball. Who taught us that? Brendan McCartney. Beveridge gets all the credit, but under McCartney’s watch we recruited the 2016 team or most of it.
Brendan McCartney taught us how to be so poorly managed that players would want to leave.

Contested ball was our strength because we had some of the hardest players in the competition.

im extremely envious of Collingwood's coaching panel. Mcraes smart enough to get some very experienced former senior coaches to assist him, meanwhile we have several VFL level coaches who are basically "yes men" for the dictator.
I love seeing usually really good, knowledgeable & balanced posters completely unhinged. This is what this club has now done to us. Welcome to the dark side Dogsman 😈

Sack the lot of em

It's just not fun watching this team anymore, hasn't been for a while. Even when we win they make it so bloody hard, it's exhausting. We make scoring so hard and allow the opposition to make it look so easy. Shocking turn overs, easy set shot misses, over possessing the ball, complete disconnect with the forward line, baffling team selection and a coach who just refuses to change.

Beat the bottom teams, loose to the teams above us and finish somewhere in the middle. Going nowhere quickly, Bevo has lost me.

Blaming umpires for the loss? What about the games they’ve helped us win??? Before tonight we had 40 more free kicks than the next team. Don’t give me the umpires chestnut

You do understand that the reason we have such a high free kick differential is because of the way we play not because we get a good run.

We are easily the fairest side in the league and it's reasonable to expect to us to win the free kick count almost every week if the umpires are doing their job properly.

The reason we play this way is because we are full of hard running ball players, a lot of whom are pretty lightly framed too. We don't push, shove and hold much because it's definitely not our forte. That is what other teams do to stop us.

This sums up my feelings perfectly. Not a word out of place. Spot on.

We're frustrating, exhausting, infuriating, mind bogglingly stupid, soft, error riddled and more congested and slower than the freeway during afternoon peak.

I just don't enjoy watching us now, it's something to be endured when it shouldn't be that way. It should be something enjoyable.

McCartney, took over a strong team and completely mismanaged it to the point we ended up getting some good high draft picks that we fortunately capitalised on. I think he probably deserves more credit for helping Hawthorn's threepeat by gifting them Brian Lake than he does for our 2016 flag.

Yes he's had some very good games. Not as a ruckman though.

It's been as a midfielder who is conveniently very tall and can take some useful grabs at either end of the ground. His best rucking efforts have been when he has perhaps broken even in the hitouts. I can't think of a game where he has dominated in that area, which is essentially what a ruckman is for.

Wouldn't mind seeing his For/Agst stats in the HOs and HOTAs to see if my impressions are correct. Do you have something on that OG?
He was actually ranked elite for HOTA earlier in the year, was going at something ridiculous like 40% to advantage, and above average for hitouts. He was genuinely rucking very well for the first two months, on top of his around the ground stuff.

Been the Timmy of old for the last month though, such a feeble campaigner

Will post the full usual stats breakdown in an hour or so but here are some shocking things right off the bat...

Naughton was only targeted 4 times.

We had 16 forward 50 entries that were either rushed or bombs and we scored 0 times (0%) from those entries, Port had 15 for 6 scores (40%).

Inside 50 Retention
WB: 45%

PA: 61%

Matchup Goals Against
5 - Bruce
2 - Keath, L. Jones
1 - Bontempelli, Duryea, Liberatore, O’Donnell, Vandermeer, Williams

Turnovers Punished By Goals
1 - Bontempelli, English, A. Jones*, Liberatore, Lobb, O’Donnell, B. Smith, Ugle-Hagen, Weightman

*A. Jones’ turnover was a free kick.

Unforced Turnovers
WB: 14
PA: 9

Unforced Turnovers By Player
4 - Dale
2 - Keath, West
1 - Bruce, Lobb, O’Donnell, Naughton, Treloar, Ugle-Hagen,
Ah man, I actually wanted Bruce back like I genuinely think he was our 2nd best tall early in the year - but directly responsible for 5 Goals is hilarious (does this even include his turn overs or just who he was matched up on 😳)

That is outrageous

Had "McCartney trutherism" on my bingo card.

That stupid post completely shows you know nothing about football

Most of the Ports Coast to coast goals came out of general play in our forward half. This is where small forwards are expected to earn their keep. They are there to apply defensive pressure and to gather the ground ball and you know...get more than 0 disposals. One would think that with more than 50 forward entries would could expect a little more than that

The fact is that he averages 3.8 kicks, 4.5 handballs, lays 2.9 tackles and kicks 0.4 goals a game and is a emblematic of what is wrong with this side. Especially the dysfunctional forward half.

Nobody expects Jones to gather 20 possessions and kick 5 goals. However, 0 is just unacceptable at this level.

He should've been dropped weeks ago. He is getting games because there is literally nothing to replace hime with.
Yeah they can lock the ball in but once it’s out of there it’s no longer on the forward line. The fact that we’re so poorly set up behind the ball that one kick exiting the forward line means a definite uncontested mark inside 50 says a lot more about our system then our shit small forwards.

This is 100% a full ground issue wayyyy deeper than having poor small forwards. You could have 3x prime Cyril’s in there and it wouldn’t make a difference. The ball will exist defensive 50 at some stage, but it should not go straight over the back for an easy inside 50.

This problem is entirely coaching not personnel

Just from who he was matched up on so it's probably not as bad as it seems. By my count on of his turnovers resulted in a goal along with 2 missed spoils that resulted in goals.

At least when Hardwick is our coach he can still slag off Marvel for having no soul and let the afl know thats why we dont go there.

Seriously sad friday night crowd after the incredible effort of the club to get these highly publicised games. Don't underestimate the work behind the scenes to get this and the importance to sponsor/ membership.

He should have kicked a bag

Sorry but I don’t agree on this take. Hard to kick ‘bags’ when you go completely missing in the second and third quarters. Been a constant for a month now. When we play the fair dinkum sides or are in must win games, he is anonymous. He needs to work hard on the track and reset because it ain’t working.

Are we still debating about a coach who won no more than 8 games in any one season is somehow better than a coach that has (or will) win at least 8 games in every single one of 9 seasons?

We are 10th for free kicks in 2023, Brisbane is first.

We also don’t have dirty players fronting the tribunal.
