What’s the bigger concern?:

1. Converting inside 50s into scores

2. Allowing opposition to convert inside 50s into scores too easily.

Definitely 2.

You can see when things click that our forward line efficiency is much better. Yesterday it was great for the first quarter, then playing limited rotations in 35 degree heat would have affected our skills a lot.

I think over the preseason we are trying to pump real game experience into experiments like Wood forward too, whereas if it were a proper season game we would have flipped it around a bit. As Collingwood gained momentum I have no doubt we would have sent Wood back and Naughton forward.

Bullshit. You ask footy fans in the streets what they thought of the Dogs flag win and over 90% would say they totally deserved it. A few tools on here hardly represent the footy world. This board is meant to be for Bulldogs supporters. Of course it is there to question things, it makes it interesting. But constant negative criticism, which is made a personal attack and put down comments which dont make any sense, should not be acceptable, especially coming from someone who says they follow the club. It is a ******* joke and I am not coming back here. Totally lost interest because one person keeps coming out with the same crap and is allowed to it.

Perhaps what the club has needed more in the last 18 months is more negative criticism and analysis rather than living off 4 weeks of simply incredible footy.

No point back slapping and being positive when clearly there has been next to nothing to be positive about since the grand final victory !

Internal fighting and people leaving club offfield and playing like a shadow of what most of us know we are capable onfield.

We really couldn’t have been much less impressive in that time- but you want to come in here and read about bunnies and unicorns!!

Lack of conversion by a mile.

Everyone has seen us squander games solely based on this.

Being able to hit a target inside 50 or even kick a set shot will sort out the back half issues re positioning and not being countered so blatantly.

You can have the best defenders in the league but if you’re going to blatantly turn the ball over you will get pantsed.

We are easy to defend against and opposition defenders set up and launch their attacks on the predictable entries we provide.

I think they are both linked, our defence allowed us to win a
flag in 2016 and to be honest it is easier to teach defence
than it is to teach offence. In my opinion if you score 100
points in a game you should never lose that game if you
have a decent defence. The biggest concern for me this
season is the number of players who have had a big fat
magic marker block out their names and i worry that if i
can see it then they must feel it despite the iron curtain
of secrecy that seems to surround our team.

Bullshit - the post was in reference to Pann's wife and was removed quickly and you got rubbed out. I clearly remember it because it was one of the two or three posts I've ever reported. Other than embarassment or being medicated, I cant explain why you deny this.

IDGAF about it and havent brought it up but I'll make the exception when I see you cheerlleading a mob with pitchforks squealing to ban someone.

Carry on.

Sorry but I find this a bit hard to believe with no proof. I don't think I'd forget if I'd posted something like that.

Clearly both are important and are related (a rebound will obviously lead to either an i50 at the other end or a repeat entry at the same end).

As it relates to the WB current strengths and weaknesses, it's about 50:50 in significance for me.

Rather than consider i50s as the crucial stat I'm starting to think that what might be a better indicator is time spent in the forward 50. While the two measures are obviously related, the ability to lock it in and prevent the opposition rebounding should be more productive than just getting the ball to cross the arc (sometimes only by a few metres). Bombing the ball into the i50 without a serious target is easy pickings for defenders. However the longer it's kept down there and the more 50-50 contests while there, the more likely it is that there will eventually be a shot on goal.

However it could also be argued that a super-efficient entry will not show up much on this stat: what if JJ sees Bont one-out on the 50 metre arc, kicks it over his head and the Bont runs onto it and snaps a goal? That's only 7-8 seconds inside 50 for a goal.

I'm sure outfits like Champion Data capture this information, but does anyone actually publish it? I'd be fascinated to see whether - and by how much - the match results are more strongly correlated to one measure or the other.

It’s ok to have differing views. We all acknowledge that. Some people repeat the same rubbish ad nauseum though. Surely you can see that this type of behavior is juvenile and antagonistic.

Sensible and constructive criticism and analysis when it's warranted is fine, what people get sick of is the personal agendas and the constant negativity.

If football and our club gives some people so much pain and agony, then maybe they should take up chess or tiddlywinks.

2nd one

In 2016 we'd all press up the ground and lock it inside 50 for repeat entries until we scored. This also nullified opportunities for the opposition to counter us through weight of numbers as Wood and Morris and co would pick off clearing kicks time after time again. This was on the back of winning our own contested footy.

Now it seems we are trying to play a more outside style, with run and gun handball, if we turn it over in our forward half and too many players have committed forward of centre then we are susceptible to getting punished on the turnover with opposition likely having an open forwardline to operate in.

We need to fix up what happens between the arcs big time, I don't think the hardball game from half back will work if we can't win our own footy up forward, or at the very least lock it in there, giving our midfielders and defenders time to set up behind the ball.
'Now it seems we are trying to play a more outside style, with run and gun handball"....,i actually thought that what YOU SAY HERE is what our gameplan actually is and was deployed in the first quarter. once the coaches saw how well it worked, we put the cue in the rack and let game evolve without sticking to the q1 plan. that is my humble view of what i saw yesterday on the tv

good questions. in modern footy think it is the second, imo. a solid defence always allows you to get the ball back and control it. control of the ball is paramount, particularly when you win it and then you transition it to an effective attack. forward pressure distabilises defences and allows scores through turnovers, mistakes, etc. just like guardiola's barcelona. i wonder if that philosophy or aspects of it was borrowed from the great guardiola. a genius imo. but you need the cattle for it to work ala barca.

As I mention early on this board, lets just hope Bevo hip surgery is all good by rd 1. Yes it's the only reason we had assistance coach the Preseason, don't fall for the club line.

My other point, even though I don't always agree with MD I'd glad he is part of the board, it's what boards are all about.

Yes we deserved the 2016 premiership, fluke hell no, bit of luck yes finally it come our way.

97, Libba givens goal we face saints with a fantastic record againt the,, likely premiership.

O9, we have a tall forward our a few iffy decisions go our way we make the gf, may not have beaten Geelong yet make it.

GWS miss a couple of shots in the last quarter, bulldogs go on to win the GF. Yet don't forget how close it was to being prelim number 8 Loss.

Best 4 weeks of my life yet so many factors in play

Still seemed we did it later in the game but had no one to kick to

Need to get structure in place at both ends, though they work in tandem with each other

Was just an amazing final series in 2016 ending in the premiership after a home and away season which I wouldn't consider spectacular by us. I reckon the 2015 home and away season itself was slightly better but no premiership in 2015. We came good at the exact right time in 2016. Players coming in for our elimination in 2016 v the Eagles certainly helped and having the week off as well. Looking forward to catching up again this season at the footy LondonBulldog.

I just watched Saturday's replay.

I think that we were lucky to be up by as much as what we were at the end if the first quarter and the final result should have been worse.

Even though we were up at the end of the first, there were the same old problems in that quarter:

- kicking directly to or to the advantage of the opposition when going forward
- playing too many mid sized utilities as forwards who are not specialist forwards
- poor one on one marking technique whereby we get out positioned and out maneuvered to easily

We just got a few easy rebound goals where we won the ball at half back due to poor collingwood skill or application and went the length of the field.

Once Collingwood sorted out their structure and skills, they pantsed us.

I will not call the year based on preseason form, but so far I am pretty unimpressed with our line up balance and structure. I never thought we got the lineup right. Maybe by design, but the resdult is telling

At the start of last season it looked like each game we would spend a half experimenting, fall behind then go back to our usual structures. In the early part of the 2017 season this was enough to eek out some wins.

Lets hope our coaching panel don't try this rubbish again.

Btw, dickson looked pretty poor in the ga me. He looked slow and unfit. Almost like he was didnt expect to play. Curious

Just on libba. There was a passage of play during the 2nd qtr (7 mins left) where we lost a centre bounce and the ball fell to Treloar in space. Libba set off after him and Treloar, who's pretty quick, wasn't clearly running away from him. I don't ever recall seeing Libba run that fast. He looks sharp.
Yes I noticed that too. Libber no known for his pace, but he nearly ran him down.
