Dustin Martins first 34 matches

I'd be surprised if Martin is in AA selection so far. For all the wad blowing over some cameo quarters, some other parts of his game have been downright shite, and I've watched a fair few Richmond games this year.

In saying that, if Martin isn't the best player in the competition in another 2 then something will have to go terribly wrong at Tigerland. I also hope he is a one club player with them.

As much as people love Martin, it's Cotchin who I am a big fan of. This guy is a real beauty, consistent and reads the game just wonderfully.

This duo has the potential to be the next Judd/Cousins, Williams/Bradley, Selwood/Ablett midfield combination which will tear opposition sides apart. Interestingly, all three combinations above were involved in premierships. The duck may be about to break for Richmond.

Martin wont get AA, but Cotch will get on the bench. If Martin keeps it up he will next year but not this one.

Question for those who know. Who has made AA with the least amount of games?

martin is an absolute superstar in the making. anyone who thinks otherwise either hasn't seen him play or has no clues about footy. the start to his career has been the best i can recall in recent times - yes selwood was gangoed on about from the get go, but have a look at the team he was in. ablett chapman bartel ling corey etc. pretty handy being the 4th or 5th midfielder behind those blokes i would have thought. never copped a tag for 3 years, whereas martin has been copping attnention in a relatively poor team in 2010 virtually straight away, and this year as the team has improved so has martin. he is more dynamic than selwood and his ability to kick a bag of goals elvevates him as well. potentiall yhte best player in the comp within a short space of time

Good post. Imagine if Martin, Fyfe and Trengrove played with quality teams like the Pies or Cats, like Selwood they would be instant superstars straight up

i mean if gets an AA jumper.....

Where would Martin be selected in the AA side? Certainly not in the middle as there are atleast a dozen midfielders having better seasons.

As for the forward-line, of the 6 spots available he will have to occupy one of the pockets if the selectors give the spots to midfielders. Again will he displace someone like Boyd, Murphy, Judd, Mitchell, GAJ, Pendlebury, Swan, Thomas (off the top of my head) pretty unlikely.

Cotchin would be a better bet for AA than Martin as he is consistently good. As for your parameters, well they are ridiculous. 34 games? Also Judd's and Selwood's first 2 years were better they tore it up against good sides. Judd kicked 5 in the first half against the reigning and eventual premiers in his second year. Martin kicked 5 against a lions side which is going to be lucky to escape a spoon and you Richmond supporters have to change your pants when his name is mentioned.

Dustin Martin sort of reminds me of Daniel Rich, both were already built like/had the strength of men when they arrived at their club and made the transition look easy. Martin looks more talented than Rich but i think Scully and Trengove will probably overtake him in the future when they fill out.

Except that Martin has come on tremendously after a comparable first season, whereas Rich trod water.

So he needs to make AA this year and then win the Brownlow next year to be up there with Wanganeen. Maybe we can just enjoy watching him play and re-access come the 2012 Brownlow night.

According to the coaches, Fyfe is the equal seventh best player in the league this season.

Surely not peripheral.

Who is this Fyfe you speak of? What VFL side does he play for?

Wow. All except one are connected with Adelaide or South Aust. And the bulk of them are from that recruiting era of the late 80's/early 90's.

Enjoy him while you can. Once those Islander hormones kick in this guy will turn into a big, slow lumbering lump at about 25 years old. That said, has been very impressive and is clearly the best of that draft.

He currently has a faster 20m sprint time than Deledio, are you suggesting in 5 years he will go from the quickest player off the mark at the club to the slowest..

In Greg Williams' first 2 seasons he played with Geelong and funnily enough played 34 games. In those 34 games he was Geelong B&F winner, Leigh Matthews MVP winner.

Gary Ablett played State of Origin after 9 games with Geelong and kicked 8 goals off a half forward flank he also won the Geelong B&F in his first season and finished 2nd in his 2nd season. In his first 2 seasons with the Cats he kicked 115.95 playing wing/centre/hff.

Geelong's starting centre line in Round 1, 1984:

Wing: Gary Ablett
Centre: Greg Williams
Wing: Michael Turner

Christ we squandered some talent.

lol this guy is talking about islanders who dont play sport at a professional level, massive difference. just another person who wishes the worst on the best

Martin and Cotchin are gun young players but neither would be in the top dozen performed midfielders this year, so not in AA calculations.
Absolutely ridiculous. Cotchin is in the top dozen players in the comp according to the coaches votes. He has been the most consistent clearance player in the competition this year and has more contested possesions then uncontested. With the exception of Mitchell and Judd, there isn't a better performed inside mid at the moment.

Martin has kicked more goals then any other midfielder while maintaining great numbers. His score involvements and general impact on games has been amazing. One, if not both are in the top dozen performed mids this season.

Maybe you should list the dozen mids..

That AA list is crazy with how many SA people are on there. Martin is a star, will only get better and is a joy to watch. Are Tigers fan confident of September action this year?

That's been his only game below 15 disposals; Judd had 11 (i.e. one third) from his first 33 games.

Add to that:

What's the criteria for this list? Because just from Freo players it looks like Palmer and Hasleby should be included

After 33 games Hasleby was 20 years and 6 days old averaging 12.4 kicks, 8.5 handballs, 20.9 Disposals, 3.3 marks, 1.9 tackles and 0.8 goals. He did this in 2000/01 one of the worst teams of the decade.
Palmer was 21 years and 4 months averaging 11.9 kicks, 10.1 handballs, 22 disposals, 4.5 marks, 2.9 tackles and 0.5 goals. This was spread over 2008/09/10 because he did an ACL half way through.

Mostly because he's played at half-forward as much as midfield this year.

Not saying that's a bad thing at all and his impact's been huge - but he's way, way, way down the lists for clearances & so on because he's lined up forward or wing more than midfield.

I'd have Cotchin in the top dozen midfielders, easy. He'd be either in, or just missing, the AA squad; but I don't think I could justify picking Martin either forward or mid.

I think Ron plucked some names from a hat

Bull. Ron is one of the better ones on BF when it comes to stats. If you want to make that accusation i suggest you put your money where your mouth is and prove him wrong.

Wrong. Dont forget Martin is not only ranked 3rd for inside 50s, he is also ranked 4th for rebound 50s. He spends the majority of his time in the Middle/back half pushing forward when he either has a rest or we need goals.
