Read this article today and interesting to note that Ireland despiteperforming so well in the ICC Trophy, players who played for them may not play in the World Cup.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/4378460.stm

An example of this is the prolific Middlesex batsman Ed Joyce, who hit 399 runs to steer the Irish towards a World Cup Place.

Any thoughts ?

why bother having these teams compete in the first place?

have the top 9 teams play in the world cup then maybe the rest can have there own world cup and the winner gets to play in the main one or something like that.

theres other less important tournaments you can chuck them all in and we can have a good laugh.

In my opinon, it's good for development of the game.

When else do these teams get an opportunity to play against high class international teams other than in the odd tour match ?

Ireland beat Middlesex a few years ago, the Irish administrators still talk about this as being a great day in Irish cricketing history.

All of these nations virtually do have a World Cup, the ICC Trophy which for this the first time this year was played under ODI rules as well as coloured clothing and white balls etc.

The winner and a one or two other nations from this tournament do get to compete in the World Cup.

i think that ICC one day trophy you can have them all in like they did with the u.s.a.

i dont like the starting format of the 2007 world cup with only the 3 teams in each group, they should have 2 main groups, then the super sixes or eights , (scrap the semis) and the top 2 of the super series get to play in the Final

Yeah, I can understand why don't you like the current format.

But, do you think Ed Joyce should play for England or make himself available to play for Ireland in the World Cup ?

havnt read the story but you make it out that his their gun player, be a shame if he didnt espically if he was their best.

what are his chances playing for England in the world cup?

Its a bit like John Davison . He was never going to get a game for Australia and the chance came up for him to play in a world cup for Canada which he did with a fair bit of success .

I would be thinking that if Ed Joyce wanted to play in a World Cup he would be able to do that Ireland and not England .

In the end it is personal choice , but you would like to think if he played in the qualification games with Ireland he should play in the World Cup with them

He's 27, so he really has to commit to England now, if he wants to play test cricket. This is his only chance of playing regular top international cricket. It's much more attractive than say, playing every few years for Ireland against sub par teams.

Good luck to him

Wasn't John Davison a great story. Hope the same happens to young Ed Joyce. I feel Ireland will be the next country granted Test Status.

How about the top 10 nations have test status and the next 10 sides have BTest status. Every 5 years there is a promotion/ demotion of the highest/lowest side

How have his perfomances been in county cricket?

If he decided to try to play for England would he be a realistic chance to break into the side . I would be thinking the way England are going at the moment he might struggle .

Once again it's all down to a personal choice.

Ed Joyce was probably just a couple of spots away from an Ashes berth. Was one of the first batsmen to 1000 runs in the County season and has made no secret of his desire to quality to play for England and to play in the next World Cup for England. His brother is also a handy batsman. Not sure whether trying to qualify for England will stop him from being able to represent Ireland.

Here we go, was a story on BBC, if Joyce plays for England A next March he cannot represent Ireland.
"If I go on the England A tour, that counts so I can't play for Ireland," he told BBC Sport.

"I've made my decision now. It was great to go back and play for Ireland but that was a one-off."
