2 goal turnaround the Pickett one . At the time I thought that was a crucial decision in the game.
It was blatant, but they interpret the rules as if you and an opposition player are inside the nine it's not deliberate. Unless someone can show me something that defies that statement it was the right call as written.

Even if I think it's stupid considering he does the exact same thing to the boundary line and it's deliberate everyday of the week. It's another example of the game just having confusing rules for special subsets of the game. Why it's adjudicates any differently to normal deliberate I don't know.

What an incredible game!!
The GABBA was rocking last night and the Lions fans were nothing but respectful and passionate!
I bloody love Richmond, but wins like that are amazing for AFL Football in QLD.
onya comrade, either team could have won a great game. your team has been insane for 5 years and they'll be back. great send off for shane edwards

My issue is that he was outside the nine and ran in, if I understand correctly, that is deliberate.

You're good egg, but you're an exception among your brethren. I trust that your team will regress and go back to being middling 9th for a decade or two. (however I can't see that happening) You have given us grief and rubbed our noses in it for a long time and your mob has not been very gracious about it. But you're very welcome here.:)
i actually think all the richmond supporters who've been around here over the last week have been very courteous

i tried to read their board and it gave me a headache though

WFH - tuning into sen in Vic and they just said if we'd lost that it would have been Mitch Robinson's last game - I posted after the game last night that it was evident that Mitch was soaking in is final Gabba appearance (and possibly afl game) and the boys getting around him. Perhaps they know internally.

That being said, I'd actually be really surprised if Mitch is selected further this year, but he should be really proud of his career. He was so integral for our club at a critical time such as 2015 to 2018 when a lot of our boys were only kids - he was there protector, our enforcer and made everyone walk that bit taller with his presence and caused opposition players inferred pressure or whatever its called.

I gave him votes. Crucial role.

Lachie's last tackle on Bolton was elite . And incredibly unrewarded by the umps.

2 talls in the forward line seemed to create more opportunities.

M/F functioned better without Lyons albeit Lachie and Clug had blinders.

McStays best game ever. By a long way.

Ah Chee obviously not expected to be needed when he was and still a bit underdone with 59% TOG.

Wilmott showed enough ,got a bit tired understandably.

Fages will have more sleepless nights before next Friday because after Fort for Oscar and Rayner for probably Robbo he's going to bring in Answerth and Lyons against the wishes of most supporters.

In his press conference fages said good on the recruitment team for bringing in fort. We will be keeping him in cotton wool till next week's game.

Definately playing, so back to three talls plus ruck.

I liked last night with one less tall, but if they all play as well as last night the three talls could be the masterstroke the coaches think it is.

I know only one game but does it show that we are/could be a better side with a smaller forward line and a more mobile ruck?
I’m not quite buying into that at this stage, yes McStay was very good and shown he should be the second ruck going forward but I still think we really missed Oscar’s work in the clearances and contest. I think Neale’s game really covered up how big an out Oscar was.

Overall I thought our side looked much more athletic and balanced last night. We were still not good from a team defensive point of view but we were more able to stop Richmond runs and that helped in the end secure the win. Lyons and Rayner probably come straight back in next week which significantly affects our defensive capability.

Anyway great win all up and a top game to watch. Really happy we got there in the end.

On some of the players:

Cameron – busted his gut all game, the head never went down and did some really nice team things. He is the best small forward in the competition when playing like this. Hope it continues.

Daniher – was really ordinary all day and got lucky with scraps on his goals. Just lead straight up the ground and jump at the ball rather than trying to jump on shoulders ffs.

Hipwood – had a really nice first half and quiet second but he was more involved in the play than usual and overall had a nice game. When things were hot at the end of the game he threw himself into the play and was a positive influence.

Gardiner – was absolutely horrid in the first half. By my count he was directly responsible for 4 goals just from really horrible play which you would get pulled for in an under 14 match. Was better in the second half but if we had other options he should be dropped.

Payne – had a couple of very ordinary kicks in the first half but apart from that was good all night. Did a really nice job on Reiwoldt and even the late goals came from marks taken 45m out on the boundary which if you had to concede a mark, that is where you would want it.

Robertson – was asked to do a defensive job and that was what he did. Didn’t get a heap of it himself but did get a few nice disposals in tight which helped the team. Was a solid contributor and I would have him keeping his job.

Prior – also did not get much of it but burned it way too much. He was a liability with the ball in hand which puts his spot in jeopardy for next week.

Robbo – his legs are gone and just cannot run out games. If we see him again it will be as the sub imo. Thanks for your service Mitch.

Ah Chee – played forward and got a couple out the back marks but was pretty quiet overall. Made a few nice chases but he was out of the game too much. I know people love him but he is a fringe 22 player for me simply because he just does not get enough of the ball.

Bailey – his best game for ages. He worked hard this week and was very influential. He was clean and dangerous around the ball and created several goals. Really nice game from him.

Wilmot – nice first game from him. I loved his confidence to run from the back even if it was only for 15m. He made the opposition react and got them out of their patterns. I think he and Coleman will make a very nice combination going forward.

Coleman – he is the guy you want with the ball in hand. Just looks so dangerous every time he gets it and even under pressure he got he ball to good spots. Defensively he was solid apart from that whiff on Rioli.

Berry – was probably not as consistently involved as I would have liked but he was impactful when he was and his kicking was really solid. Some of his kicks were pin point tonight but just a fraction too long in the air but overall I take that given how much of a step up that is from last year. A solid game overall.

Mathieson – tried hard and did not look out of place in any way.

Mitch had his whole family there, his wife posted before (2015) and after (2022) shots of Mitch with his son on the ground, he asked basti what playing in the lower leagues after retiring was like, he has been getting epidurals in his back to play. House has been sold.

Has been very clear he is gone. I've been mourning for months.

I find it laughable that this is the best level of umpiring we have. There were so many decisions you could query, but Jerry has his head ripped off and nothing - not to mention the Linc mark late. Even if you construed that Joe's attempt was unrealistic, he didn't interfere with the Richmond player that prevented him from spoiling Linc.

I did think Rich ran too far in the last though.

yes plenty of highs against us that didnt go. I even thought there were some rough calls against us for delierate over the boundary in the 1st quarter which gave them set shots, but when there was a reverse opportunity when the Richmond player visibly hand balled the ball into the goal was not called.

Rich one I think was fair, but also those are rarely called, and the fact the umpires completely put their whistle away at times I felt it was a rough call given stage of the game and its residual impact.

And after ~90 straight minutes of game time without sitting on the bench he does this...

That was the match winner in the end. Literally clung on to him and stopped him from making the connection.

Neale was absolutely brilliant. Everyone should try and learn whatever they can about the one touch craft from him, it's mesmerizing to watch.

Overall it was our game to win or lose. We were the better team, but let them in with some poor execution out of our D50. They did well to convert pretty much every half-chance. I don't think this result is the start of a fairytale run but it's at least nice to get justice for some heart-breaking finals over the years.

Not enough love for Hipwood imo. Clutch goals, competed in the air and followed up at ground level. For all the match committee bashing this year they were fully justified last night.

With Cam out we needed a good Bailey game and he delivered. He needs to stop taking on the man on the mark for long distance shots but otherwise he was elite.

Matho didn't get a lot of it but some handy touches in the contest late to get us moving forward. It's a lot to ask of Neale but I hope we stick with the midfield combos (+ Cam) next week.

One of the best wins I have seen by our club. Backs against the wall with injuries/suspensions/poor form leading into the finals. Then we lose Oscar in first 3 mins and I thought thats it we are done. We copped injuries wrong time of the year etc etc.

But to the boys credit they hung in the game in the early stages and didn't let the Tigers kick away. The longer we stayed with them the more belief we built. Hipwood's first half was enormous and that goal on HT was a huge lift. Tigers losing Prestia swung the game back a bit as well.

In the second half a few times it looked like the Tigers would just be a little too good and skip away eventually. But, we managed to find that important goal to keep us within reach. Our midfield dominance despite not having a ruck was decisive. You will do well to see a better midfield performance than what Neale served up last night. Absolutely took the boys on his broad shoulders and carried them to victory. McCluggage was brilliant as well and such poise with the ball in hand. Has that extra second that he holds the ball for and makes the right decisions.

Zac Bailey back to his brilliant best last night - we have been missing that. Charlie was very good last night. Starcevich did an exceptional job on Bolton. Bolton and Dusty were barely sighted. McStay fought hard all match and least got his hands on the ball around the ground which he needed to do.

Really happy for Wilmott and Dev Robertson. Both did a great job and bring that exuberance and enthusiasm that only youth can provide.

So happy for Fages as well. He was under enormous pressure.

All the Tigers fans complaining about the review decision at the end. They didn't seem that concerned when at the MCG a month ago we kicked a goal - it was reviewed and confirmed a goal and then umpire said doesn't matter I paid a free kick to Richmond anyway! They went down and kicked a goal and won the match. Karma baby.

Gutsy gutsy win by the Lions.

Coleman – he is the guy you want with the ball in hand. Just looks so dangerous every time he gets it and even under pressure he got he ball to good spots. Defensively he was solid apart from that whiff on Rioli.

I think it hasn't been mentioned enough how much poise he showed when he hit up Bailey for the kick that Daniher then kicked the game winner off.

That whole run of play was players just doing anything to not possess the ball too long, yet when he got the ball he stopped, held it a bit longer and hit Bailey with the perfect kick.

I have a thought about McStay’s game. It reminded me of the USS Johnston(e) (2nd WW Philippines) whose captain had told all his crew he was a captain that would go where angels fear to tread. He was not going to avoid danger he was going to court it.

The Japanese had lured the American fleet away from 6 junior carriers and a whole lot of transport and left them nearly defensless against a Jap battleship and associated task force emerging unexpected.

The Johnston realising that it was hopeless never the less charged the Japanese delaying and discouraging them enough they buggered off.

A magnificent victory but the Johnstone was sunk and most lost.

The Tigers have buggered off and some think Dan has been lost. I reckon he is hanging out to screw a few more dollars

Just wanted to say great game last night from your mob and regardless of the controversial finish of the score review which I still have no idea was it a goal or point? Who the F knows Lynch acted like he missed Andrews acted like it was a goal. I really hope that doesn't take away from the performance of your club last night and the game that Neale played. He was a beast gave our midfield a lesson big time.

It was one of the best finals games in a long time. Both teams scored over 100 and the margin never really got beyond 2 kicks the entire game. I know we lost but I can easily cop that and much rather watch those games of footy than 55 vs 70 results that are dour.

I thought you guys were stiff when McCarthy had the mark taken away from him late anyway would would have put you in front.

All the best for next week and hopefully beyond and a big shout out to your club for the respect they gave Shedda at the end of the game.

Shedda is an absolute champion, was good to see the universal love he got at the end.

He was standing in the middle of the goal square when he handballed, but it felt particularly rough after they got one when Starcevich missed a target by 1m and got done lol.
I had a good angle of that play and you are correct. Maybe a little bit back from middle of square
The reason all Lions players and the crowd seeing from a good angle enthusiastically appealed was the Tigers player was not under any pressure
That is how it appeared from my angle. No Lions player close enough applying pressure
The angle i saw from TV later that night was looking more from the center of the ground.
Possible where central umpire was viewing. Not sure where the 3rd umpire was
At that angle one Lions player may have appeared to be closer than what he actually was

So glad we won without that being called
Just imaging todays media if that was awarded a free, added to the Lynch goal overturn
I have had the TV on all morning and all they are talking about is the ARC overruling the goal umpire decision

Other decisions that umpires & players made during that game could have changed the end result many times

What a game and what a good result

Was at the game so maybe my view is a bit biased, what is everyones thoughts on Umpiring? I thought we got it pretty rough alot of the times? Maybe on the stat sheet free kick count might not look that bad but I felt like we didn't get the rub of the green on fairly impactful situations.

  • Several marks taken which were disallowed, even when we had and it was slapped out...but reverse they were paid
  • Plenty of Holding the ball and incorrect disposal calls didnt go our way
  • Rich run more than 15metres, those are rarely called

was very frustrating to watch

Linc was robbed on many occasions. Be it a mark or tackle or his head being taken for no free.

Not sure what happened there but Linc couldn't get anything in his favor. I had to check if he was playing with a Ginnivan mask on.

The Jerry high tackle one was rough, but at the ground I thought there wasn’t much they could do because the players were blocking the umpires view of that.
