Hey guys, I'm hoping for a cracking game for us to pull away in the last quarter, but you never know with these 2 sides.

Really interesting reading in this thread. Although I totally understand the notion that we will have all the pressure on our shoulders (having gone out in week 1 of the finals over the past 2 years, Ratt's un-signed, etc) you would think that Essendon being the proud club that it is, wont be turning up just to fill in the numbers. I mean, surely there is an element of pressure on your side as well. I hardly believe that if you guys loose, your just going to go away from the game and say oh well next year. I mean the last time you guys won a final was against West Coast in 2002. That I am sure does not sit well with the powers at be and for that matter you supporters.

Anyhow as mentioned I hope for a great game.

It will be an exciting build up that's for sure and the atmosphere will be electric.

But basically, win the clearances, win the game.

I reckon its more - break even, or near break even in the clearances, win the game.

The last game was proof of this - they cant expect anymore out of Judd and Murphy (or Betts) - we had our two biggest and best midfielders out, our backline consisted of 2nd game for the year Carlisle and Hardingham and with Judd and Murphy having games of their seasons, still couldnt shake us until the third and Pears down.

Our team is significantly better placed to where the game will be won and lost compared to the last one where we left Heppell to learn on Murphy, and Howlett the same with Judd all night. McVeigh wont need to cover other roles this time and hopefully has 2 weeks to focus on a total Betts lockdown job.

We have nothing to lose, and can just go all out ala the Collingwood game. Take it on and play with freedom.

can. not. wait.

We finished 4th last, had an horrific season with injury under a new coach, and made the finals when most expected us not to. You guys have unwittingly placed unbelievable pressure on yourselves, on a coach with no security right now in a cut throat elimination final against a rival in a game you will start overwhelming favourites. You were so close to top four, yet are 2 hours away from having your season blow up again in one afternoon against sides you would have thought you could beat going in and it could cost your coach his job.

All finals have pressure on all, no doubt, but I cant think of a final in a long time where the discrepancy in mental pressure is so vast going into an elimination final.

We just have to take the game on and play with flair. Many of your players seem to tighten up, kick it out on the full, miss easy shots and turn it over when the pressure games mount. We have to hope it all comes home to roost in one afternoon.

Hey guys, not a huge fan of essendon for obvious reasons, but coming in here to congratulate you on making the finals. The AFL will be a happy mob over the next few years when the pies, dons and blues are all genuine contenders.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on a few things:

1. Hurley-will he play up forward or down back? IMO he'll be wasted down back because his defensive style doesn't suit the Blues small forward line and it'd be a waste of talent, obviously he could chop n change throughout but i would think he'd predominately play up forward?

2. Jobe Watson-how is he holding up with injuries? haven't heard too much about him lately

and 3. do you tag Murphy or Judd or run off them? this is where the game can be won and lost, they simply get too much of the ball and with Judd doing the hard yards and Murphy being the user of the ball he is, they can do major damage (stating the obvious).

Just wanting to hear some thoughts, i'll be honest i haven't paid that much attention to essendon this year, probably because i didn't have any DT'ers :p

Probably watching a game or reading a couple of match reports is a good port of call.

Hurley will play forward. No doubt about it now with Crameri out. Watson's been back since the Collingwood - got concussed against West Coast, though. His form has been good without being great IMO, been fumbling more than usual around the contests. Will need to lift, and I'm sure he will. I don't think we will stop both Judd and Murphy. Hocking will go to one of them, while Howlett may have a run with role.

Thanks mate. Should be interesting with the week off too :thumbsu:

Not the worst idea I've ever heard, but when Judd and Murphy go down in the first quarter and they're 2 runners down they'll be regretting it

Lets see how they go with Garlet and Yarran down in first 15 min. That is what we had to endure with Dempsey and Winderlich in round 4. Interesting to see if they can hang like we did.

If I am figuring everything correctly, compared to our last game against them we will have the following ins:

Watson, Hocking, Fletcher

And the following outs:

Crameri, Prismall, Slattery, Dyson

That has to be a win for the ins.

Also a half of Pears (a single Pear?)

You know what's really great about the '93 GF?

You can tell the outcome just by watching the two teams warm up in the rooms.

The guys on the field that day may be the the boxes now, but something resembling that would be just marvelous.

What I think we have to do to have a chance:

- Stop Betts from having a day out like last time.
- Be even in clearances.
- Do not allow them the run from half back through Yarran and Scotland and then allow their midfield to spread.
- Basically if we come close to matching them in the midfield we have a very good shot.

Yarran, Scotland, Judd and Murphy. They are the keys. Walker, Betts, Gartlett and Simpson will come into it and look like stars if those guys are on top but the first four are the ones to stop.

They are a little bit like St Kilda with Hayes, Goddard, Riewoldt and Fisher IMO. Very hard to stop but if you can the game is there for the taking.
