Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

I think this is a great move.

The only thing that concerns me about it is the reticence we as a club had to give players like JJ a 2 year deal, whereas we've given it to an outsider like Michael. Not sure that's right, but as we keep hearing, footy's a business these days

You have a point, but unfortunately players don't move clubs for 1 year deals. That's just the nature of the beast.
Michael wouldn't have signed for 1 year, and JJ was always going to get 2.

At the end of the day, Dean Solomon was playing as a key backman last year. We traded him for two third round picks and improved our draft position. We draft Michael in the PSD and he basically fills the role Solly was playing last year and is better suited to it. If we drafted Cloke to fill that role, I'd be critical, but at the moment it's hard to be critical of this decision.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

BS , he had an average year last year but he wasnt crap. It was not like he got spanked every week....
His form before last season had been good.

Hardly. He looked the most non interested player in the league this year and with his supposed training schemes, Essendon would be taking a risk. But Good Luck to em..

Yep, spot on. I'm not critical of the decision at all. As you said, Michael is a much better player to take the big 1st or 2nd attacking forwards and we're in a much better position because of it.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

LOL Yeah we get treated sooo well. $20000 fine for wearing yellow armbands ffs. Pull ur head out champ.

Failing to remember the salary cap cheating are we boys? if my memory is correct Culton took the major hit at that time and you guy's got off scot free.......so you pull your's out first then I may consider it, may?:thumbsu:

Even if he was disinterested he was still solid most weeks, always has been.
If he's happier in Melbourne and enjoys his footy, there's a good chance this will work

Did you ever both to think that the level of penalties were consistent with the level of the breaches?

Actually scratch that, we all know you don't bother to think.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

M Michael v J Brown - might have a squizz at that one next year

with a top grade FB recruit and a first class FF coming back, they'd look a different side. Can't see them cracking the 8, but they sure won't be second last next year.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

1. Player is a gun and highly valuable in a trade
2. Player says he wants to retire
3. Player is under contract for one more year
4. Player retires
5. Club relunctantly accepts retirement and relinquishes contract
6. Player magically comes out of rertirement one day before draft
7. Club drafts player who is under contract but lied to his club in order to cancel contract and enter preseason draft.

Draft tampering.
Illegal.
I agree. This is not some genius drafting move that only Sheeds could pull off.

They let this deal go through and we will have a very dangerous precedent.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

Surely Joel Perry would be a better option for Essendon..

Not when we already have Bradley and Lee developing and could potentially draft Hansen with our first pick.

Draft Perry as well and we potentially have four players of similar age who play in a similar position.

I don't think Perry is very good, he plays in a position the Roos have a weakness in. I definately don't think he's as good as Lee.

Jeez a little upset are we? Don't give a rats about the yellow arm bands, simpe FACT your club cheated and got caught with little fan fare....whilst the Baggers got screwed (and deserved so) which has cost them millions of $$$$.....this occurs while you get richer playing in finals etc....so don't cry for me argentina......:thumbsu:

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

How do you know when you first talked to Mal?

I don't, no-one here does.

Hence why the allegations of draft tampering are a waste of time and come without any proof.

Regardless, another club has a pick before us. Why would we have forced Mal Michael into the PSD prior to his retirement, knowing that another club could take him before us?

Seems a rather wasted effort.

Upset about what? I'm laughing at you, it's amusing.

We did get penalised, we lost picks, we got fined.
We're just better than Carlton. We were/are a better organisation and our club handled the situation better.

Little fanfare, perhaps you just weren't old enough to remember.

Yep, losing our draft picks for the first 3 rounds in the 1999 draft, we didn't get penalised at all

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

God you speak some crap.
When did Essendon first speak to Michael?

If it's after he retired, it's not draft tampering. Nor is it illegal.

Michael is the person tampering with the draft. Its not neccessary to prove whether or not Essendon spoke with him. If its ten minutes after he retired, and about five minutes after his contract was ripped up, then he's manipulating the draft.

Re: Essendon sign Mal Michaels

Bit of a bummer. Why would essendon want someone who quite obviously lacks morals and has zero loyalty? Lions did everything they could for him and he does this. Nasty move IMO by mal.

Having said that he was pretty blase this year and can't see him caring too much whether the bombers win or lose. And not much of a loss for bris as we are rebuilding and looking towards the future. The loss of mal will fast track the development of our younger players.

But would be nice to see some legal action and a full scale investigation in case anything illegal did occur.

Just my 2c.
