Player Watch Father-Son Pick #25 (2019) - Jackson Mead

Still only less than 39 games. Played an outstanding game and the stats don’t really reflect his influence on the game. Now needs to be played every week to build up his experience. Only problem will be midfield time available once Rozee is back or finding himself as the sub.

Jackson and Ollie in the midfield gets the balance right with a couple of hard ball winners getting clearances. The improvement of Mead over the past few weeks especially has been good to see.

John Cahill was a great wingman and half forward as Port captain and Rozee could take on more of that role.

As for Mead, now he needs more high pressure games to continue to improve his gather and disposal.

He's quite tough and strong over the ball for a player who isn't that big. Josh Carr probably sees a bit of himself in Mead.

AFL ratings had him as the second highest rated player on the field. You just need to look at the right stats.

I think he might actually be really good if he was given opportunity. He makes really good decisions with the ball and hes getting better at taking contact and then dishing it off.

The challenge for him is to just get opportunity. At some of the bottom eight clubs he would be a first rotation midfielder.

Thanks. And it was supposed to be less than 30 games.

Mead to me seems a player made for the middle of winter and finals.

Just a good honest old fashioned footballer.

He is the most like Roger James we have had since Roger.

I still feel like there might be sunny days against fast teams at Marvel where he misses for match up reasons though.

Jackson brings a unique skill set to our midfield in the same mould as Roger James & Sam Mitchell. He’s not fast, but nor was Roger or Sam. What he can do well is win his own ball, & is the best two sided player on our entire list. He’s also a very good overhead mark for his size.

Too many people get hypnotised by the razzle dazzle, at the expense of basic, sound fundamental’s that win you games. Going forward, I’m extremely confident that Mead will blossom into one of our key on-ballers, & will carve out a wonderful career at the PAFC.

I loved Meady.

I always remember him keeping Wayne Carey quiet.
Except our first ever final in 99 where Carey dominated and kicked 6....in the pouring rain no less!! (not trying to knock Meady by the way, he was our most consistent player in the early years, just illustrating how good Carey was).

Carey played an insane game that day. He was knackered by the end of that year, but he pulled out one last huge effort to sink us. He was solid in the two finals they played after that, but that was a game out of the box.

I don’t think there’s much shame in being beaten by Wayne Carey. It’s like a defender beating themselves up getting towelled by peak Warren Tredrea!

I wonder how Stephen Silvangi rationalised some of the hauls kicked on him by legends.

Mead was the 2nd highest rated player on the ground. With a 216% increase on his expected rating.. whatever that means

His predicted rating was 6.2 and he got a 19.6. That means he played well above his past performances / average performances.

Carey had a classic Carey 10-15 minute period where he kicked 4 goals and was unbelievable in the wet and mud. The other 80% of the game Meade did a reasonable job on him.
