Player Watch Father-Son Pick #25 (2019) - Jackson Mead

It's not even lack of consistency with Mead

He just doesn't do anything well at AFL level. His 20 possession games are the same to his 9 possession games. Both zero impact.
He certainly lacks weapons. Occasionally has a game which is impactful but it's rare. Hopefully he can improve his skill level under a new coach.

To many of us expect everyone to be Judd or JHF from day dot.

We talk about building a deep list but don’t want to blood games into ‘kids’ and allow their game to evolve.

Mead was good up to the last month, he will build consistency with greater exposure. Let’s not forget the interruptions previous years, was this his first full season of footy since being drafted?

Boy, if we did find 5 games for Lorenz and he didn’t average 22 touches would we be turning him over also?

Mead is fine. He's handy depth and would do well when called upon. But he's a midfielder who we have thrown in the HFF. Shouldn't be in the 18 once SPP is back and we upgrade the Narkle/Evans/McEntee position.

I’ve said it elsewhere, our midfield mix is far too offensively focused with JHF, Butters and Rozee in there. Mead is a Midfielder with instincts to go both ways. Give Mead Rozee’s midfield minutes next year and get Rozee to Half Forward. We would be a far better balanced team.

I know it’s not just as simple as A + B = C. But rotate Buttees and JHF midfield to F1 play a 5 man forward line Georgiadies, Rioli, SPP, Rozee, Lukocious/Lord/Scully. This will force us to lower the eyes and hit up blokes to retain possession. Sure opposition try and rebound off Half Back and force numbers there but the whole group need a jolt to change the game plan. Give our mids free rein to have a shot in the run and be the highest scoring midfield in the comp. DBJ off the bench as his work rate through the roof.

Rioli, Georgiadies, JHF (F1)
Rozee, Lukocious, SPP
Burgoyne, Mead, Lorenz
Farrell, Aliir, L.Evans
Burgman, BZT, Sinn
Sweet, Butters, Drew
L.Jones, DBJ, Langford/Smilie/Reid (first rounder for Houston), Tauru (Pick 24 for Soldo)

Mead had a really good patch this year but then fell away really badly. I dunno. He fumbles a shitload and is generally a very nervous player. I'm not convinced. Maybe a new coach?

His kicking is so bad.

In the last part of the year, his turnover count went through the roof.

Against Haw 11 d and 5 turnovers.
Against Melb and Adel 10d and 4 turnovers. Was credited with 3 effective disposals in that showdown.
Against Freo 18d with his season high 6 turnovers. Was credited with only 8 effective disposals from that 18.

I think it was the Melb game he kicked 2 out on the full from unpressured kicks. Maybe the Freo game.

Either way, for a kid that has all the traits of an elite kick, he plays way too scared, and lacking confidence. In the middle of the year when it was rolling for him he was playing far more confident, whilst being productive and producing less turnovers total. That kid can play and should get game time, but the fade out we saw late in the year was really concerning.

Unfortunately Mead just doesn’t have it, I thought he’d come on nicely… shame

Never been a Mead fan, always believed he’s there because of his name.
Did some nice things last year but don’t see him as a consistent AFL footballer.
I don’t get the Mead pour on, he isn’t JHF, Butters or even Rozee, but he has just got through his first full season of senior footy. He has been played out of position and showed at times he was a capable AFL footballer. He is doing an apprenticeship at Half Forward, let’s see him as a Centreman in a balanced onball brigade.

Not every player needs to be a top 50 player in the comp. As others have said, he ruptured his spleen against South at Panther Park. He is building and will have peaks and troughs throughout.

If his name wasn’t Mead I doubt he’d even be on our list.

Mead imo is playing in a position that doesn't suit him but he's still managed to do reasonably well in it. I've always said since his draft year that Mead can be the replacement to Wines (perhaps not in that Brownlow quality) but one thing he's always been good at is at the contest. I still think that's where his value is. And that's where I'd play him SANFL next year to ensure when the time comes he can step up and replace Wines.

Mead has been decent, not super impressive but showing some things but not a lot but he does play the hardest position in the Hinkley ecosystem which is small/medium forward and he does so out of position as he is a natural midfielder. His biggest attribute is that his possessions usually go to our advantage but he needs to pick up some other traits soon or he will be surpassed.

He would be hovering on the bench at the moment in the team with Richards and maybe even Ratcat.

I’d like to see him stay on ball, none of this HF crap position. I really hope he succeeds.

he isnt good enough to be in our on-ball rotation

Especially if we pick a mid-fwd with our first pick such as a hynes
Ruck Sweet
Centre Wines/Drew
Rover Butters/Mead
RuckRover JHF/Pick 13/10…?

Rozee to the Half Forward Flank and play a Hird-like game.

Some of us on bigfooty want rozee fwd, but the reality is, it isnt gonna happen, he gonna play majority midfield like the last 3 seasons

that gives us 6 rotations- Without Mead

No room for a undersized player with no speed, poor ball use and no afl quality traits. i am being a little bit harsh but its, justified.

he isnt much better then frank, narkle, mcentee.

If we are injury free, Mead can be in the middle in the SANFL side.

I thought his Fremantle game was good, I don't think the turnover count reflects his game there. He didn't have a good finals series, he was unable to absorb the increased pressure and reverted to dump kicks/kicks to space and very rushed disposals leading to turnovers.

Genuine footballers without elite athletic traits are so hard to gauge. I've seen plenty of debate about Karl Amon, Willem Drew, Sam Gray, Will Snelling and Dylan Williams and I think Mead fits in with this group.

The Good
Groundball skills
Tidy Basic Disposal (Hit up kicks, quick hands on the inside)
Defensively sound (As a Half-Forward)
Good Intensity
Good Balance (Two-sided disposal helps/Keeps his feet)

Improving
Taking ground before disposing of the ball
Basic play-making (Draw and give, Give and go etc.)

Limiting abilities
Does not challenge teams/create space using his disposal (Most effective disposals are quick handballs/short kicks to players leading towards him)
Loves a dump kick/kick to space if he can't work out an immediate option

Going forward in his current rolling-up half-forward role I think he needs to develop his ability to absorb pressure and put his teammates into better spots. This means, at times, waiting longer to dispose of the ball to find the best option/let teammates get into open space and opening up his vision beyond the first option or dump kick 50m down the line. This is a pretty common development for players up to 100 games, I don't think it's beyond him.

If he improves this ability in addition to everything else he brings to the table I think he'll keep fighting for a spot in the 22 going forward, if not I think he's one good drafted player away from being out of the midfield rotation completely and Staring down the barrel of the dreaded small forward role.

Instead, he’d be on Sydney’s list.
You can gauge someone’s football knowledge by their opinion on Mead. Those who want him delisted have no clue.

That 2019 Sydney draft is insane looking back:

5 - Dylan Stephens - plays 43 games and then is traded in 2023 to North Melbourne to upgrade their 2023 pick 25 to NM's 2024 pick 22.

* On draft night they trade 27 and a future third with Adelaide to move up to 25

25 - Bid on Jackson Mead - The conspiracy theorist in me is convinced that this was a condition of their trade with Adelaide

26 - Will Gould - Plays 4 games and is then delisted at the end of 2023.

36 - Elijah Taylor - Plays 5 games in 2020 and then is suspended for the season for sneaking his partner into the COVID hub. They then delist him at the end of 2020 after he is arrested and pleads guilty to assaulting his partner.

39 - Chad Warner - Absolute superstar. He could easily end up being the best player in the draft class though he has some stiff competition in Tom Green, Noah Anderson and Caleb Serong.

The Chad Warner pick saves this from being an all-timer bad draft, and they picked him with their last pick of the night.
