Favourite Geelong player 2007-2009

Well i was only just getting back into football in 2007 so didn't really have a favourite but at the start of 2009 i picked my top 3 which are still the same up until now pretty much.

1. Joel Selwood
2. Steve Johnson
3. James Kelly

In early 09 after i couldn't decide between them 2 players come on as a tie for 4th.

4. Andrew Mackie - Harry-Taylor

Then Simon Hogan came along and is currently sitting just below Joel as my favourite.

Actually the better and most spoken about Joel becomes him the less i like him. As he wasn't 1 of my favourites simply because he was so good and everyone loved him it was quite the opposite. I liked him because i actually didn't know anyone that was a fan of his and i didn't wanna just latch onto the same people as everyone else. Much in the same way at the start of the year i got sick of all the talk about Stevie J.

WOW this was damn hard, especially when my man-crush has extended from Chappy to most of the team!!!! Hehehe. Chappy is still my man, but players like Otto and Rookie have fast become high up there too. I still sit in amazement at the GAJ and LOVE my daughter's fave Scarlo. Wheels (Wojo) setting off at high speed is awesome. Hell, I think I might as well list them all...coz two out of three feels great!!

I love them all, but I've always had a thing for the Ling. He's been a mid-field general and I admire taggers. He shuts down the best opposition player week after week. And you'll never meet a nicer bloke.

Re: Just wondering who is your fav. Cats player from the past 3 years?

Ablett by a hair. Bartel, Selwood and Stevie J deserves honourable mentions. I do adore the entire team though.

Haha. :D He is overrated. Kicked the first goal in the GF from a holding the ball, which was good. Kicked one more goal after the siren. Did some good things but got only 11 possessions. Forget Norm smith, he'd be struggling to get in the top 22 on the ground on the day. He definitely gets more praise than he deserves. As opposed to someone like Joel Corey.

You knob. Rooke had a role in 3 or 4 of our scoring shots in the last term, and most of it would not have been picked up on the stats sheet.

It was Rooke who crashed the pack in the goal square, causing the ball to fall forward, allowing Byrnes and Varcoe to get it to Chapman to kick the goal to put us 6 points up. It was Rooke who kicked the ball inside 50, then buttered up, soccering the ball goalwards, before following up to get it through for a behind to get us 7 points up. It was Rooke who created a contest which allowed the ball to fall to Mooney, before sneaking into the forward 50 and taking the mark, before kicking the goal after the siren. Just because he only had 11 touches doesn't mean he didn't have an impact on the game. He's the one who sets subtle blocks off the ball, so leading forwards can get a big enough break to mark uncontested. He's the one who lays shepherds, allowing our small forwards enough time to have snap shots for goal. He's the one who chases and harrasses and puts pressure on the defence trying to clear the backline. None of this ends up on a stats sheet, but it is something that his teammates, or us Geelong fans, never fail to acknowledge.

But hey, he could be like Jack Watts.

Ended up going with Boris although it was a toss up between him, Selwood and Rooke.

Just below them I would have Gaz, Chappy, Otto and Stevie J

Hogan has shown some signs that he could well be right up there in the not to distant future

Love'em all of course, especially Max! But l cant go past Scarlo and surprised that so many others give him such short shrift here. Defences win and lose flags. Without him as our General (more than any other and just ahead of Otto) we would not have won our flags. l heard Harry talking about him recently and he was completely in awe of what Scarlo had done to support him and the way he plays.....He is one of the best 3 or 4 players to ever pull on the hoops and it has been a privilege to watch his career. He is an outstanding, tough, ruthless, skillful and smart footballer. Indeed an all time great of the entire competition. And we will miss him unbearably when he is gone.

It is a tough one but I'd have to say Harry :)

Loved him as soon as he was drafted... he is just such a unique unit!

Varcoe (2010 will be the year of the Varcoe) and Kelly (gets me firm every time he evades a tackle... which happens alot ;)) round out my top 3.

Who's giving Scarlo the short shrift?

We can't vote for everyone in here, as much as we'd like to.

Hmm, I wonder who voted for Shannon. :p

Well for a start l was surprised to find him left off the initial poll list . But more generally people are naming their favourite 3 or 4 in the comments and surprised he has had as little mention as he has. People can vote for whoever they like of course (obviously there in most peoples best players).

Re: Just wondering who is your fav. Cats player from the past 3 years?

I've always loved Enright. He just goes about his business and is finally receiving the recongnition he deserves. Selwood would run a close second because he is an absolute gun! Make him captain now I say.

Having said that, I love all the players. :)
