Franks for the memories. Things don't always go well with COLA

I would prefer Buddy to stay over any win over Geelong.
I read lots of post last night saying he can go and they want him gone.
Buddy is not the difference of winning and losing and neither is an extra mid or a defender or a ruck.
The only difference of winning and losing is between the ears and not who plays or who doesn't play.

Don't you get it? They want a "big" name up there, they don't necessarily want him for his playing ability. The AFL (oops I mean GWS) want the biggest name in the AFL up there to promote the game. That is all... Lance Franklin, the AFL's puppet on a string.

I get it. I meant for us, not for GWS.

beta thinks Rougheads a fool.
Was Roughead offered the same deal as franklin? I don't think so, really can't compare the to situations. Regardless Roughead showed his true leadership by signing on early, this should be the exception and not expectation, players shouldn't be expected to sign a 600k less contract upfront because some pissy fans are getting anxious.

Roughead was obviously happy with what the club offered him. He didn't say 'Hold on, I just need to find out what other teams may offer me!'
If Franklin was happy with the reported $900k plus contract he would have signed (even Pickering told him to sign!)
But Franklin says 'No, I'd be a FOOL not to see how much I'm worth on the open market'
Interesting difference don't you think.

Question to you 'beta' ....Out of Roughead & Franklin who would be worth the $900k a year based on performance this year ?

Lets agree to disagree.

Btw I want Franklin to stay (even if I think we'd pay overs) I just believe he is going !

People need to realise that when discussing 'value' there are many factors.

Franklin is worth 3-3.5 million per year in direct marketing sales, advertising growth, memberships, etc. Financially, we could pay him 2 million to play for us and still come out in front. This discounts the "lifetime" value of new members.

In that sense, every club would pay him the GWS money. Even clubs like the Bulldogs or Demons who are financially strapped would stump up the cash, as it's a net positive benefit.

The limitation is in the salary cap itself, which provides a 'false' ceiling. Within that constraint, Franklin is only worth 600k or so to us. To GWS he could (and probably would) be worth substantially more.

Yesterday was a pretty positive day on the Franklin front. Pickering's statements and (as silly as it may seem) Roughed's confident affirmation that he would stay were both reasons for optimism. It's amazing how what you believe can sway so radically based on whispers and innuendo. I think a lot of people (especially on these boards) have very immovable opinions which are based on nothing more than that. It's defensiveness in the end and we should do our best to remind ourselves of this.

Liam 'Pinocchio' Pickering !

About a week or go I heard Hutchy and few others talking about us getting the #1 draft pick. Any news on that? Is it a possibility? Not sure how it would work though as we can't trade him

Beale's gone and today the Rebels announced O'Onner won't be there next year.
Why would you play for the Rebels if you were a decent rugby player trying to play for the Wallabies?
A team that will never be important in the Rugby scene, a waste of time
Not much chance to show your sporting ability to large crowds or huge TV audiences!

Sounds like GWS...........

Maybe What Beale and O'Conner have gone through with Rebels will show Buddy a snippet of what he will put up with in GWS, and are doing him a favour!

Money ain't everything!

Hey Stratts...I've always said where there's smoke there's fire!
Thought this little snippet from the age was interesting on the pick one front.
Anyone else thinking Lachie Whitfield and Tom Boyd would be adequate compo for Buddy???
While Greater Western Sydney has yet to table its multi-million dollar offer, Lance Franklin's agent says he is "very confident" the superstar forward will remain at Hawthorn next season.
The Hawks have offered a four-year deal worth about $4 million but Franklin has shelved this until the end of the season when he will be a restricted free agent.
The Giants have opened preliminary discussions with Franklin's agent, Liam Pickering, but what is expected to be a six-year offer of more than $9 million, excluding third-party deals and a possible ambassadorial role through the AFL, has yet to tabled.
Pickering said on Saturday the Hawks remained in prime position to retain the dual Coleman Medallist.

"To be honest, there's only really one in it, which is Hawthorn," Pickering said on SEN radio.
"They're the ones I've got the offer from and it's where he plays. The better they go, the more chance he is of staying, in my view.
"I'm very confident that he'll stay. At the moment I'm dealing with Hawthorn, and I have had discussions with the Giants, obviously."
Hawks president Andrew Newbold told Fairfax Media this week his club would submit a revised offer to Franklin before the end of the season. This could include a fifth year. The Hawks have also been mindful of not pressuring Franklin, but they will want an answer within months so they can make other plans should the money set aside for him be freed up.
If the Hawks lose Franklin through free agency, they will receive only the one compensation pick, tied to their spot in the national draft.
If the 26-year-old insists on leaving, the Hawks could match the Giants' offer - they only need to match his football payments within the salary cap - and then seek a trade, for which they would be better rewarded.

I posted this on the main board in June 2010 when the G.Ablett defection was in full swing. I have now inserted Hawthorn references to replace the Geelong ones.

THE GREAT GEELONG (Hawthorn) SMOKESCREEN

It is about time all opposition clubs and supporters became aware of the clever smokescrren drifting over the AFL landscape. The smoke is originating from as high up as the Presidents office at Geelong (Hawthorn).
It is no secret that the Cat's (Hawks) list and current form is the envy of ever club in the country. Consequently;
GARY ABLETT (Lance Franklin) WILL SIGN A CONTRACT MAKING HIM A CAT (Hawk) FOR LIFE ON THE EVE OF THE FINALS: Make no mistake.
The result of this signing will galavanise an allready powerful Club and supporters group, making them virtually invincible come finals time. This is the agenda only known amongst the select at Geelong (Hawthorn) and is a frightening prospect for all the other clubs.
I know realise that this premonition will apply to us. Am positive I have got it right this time.;)

I would prefer pick 5 ish and a player like T Adams to be honest.

Then we get a top talent, another strong talent with a couple of preseason a in him and room to grab a FA player to fill the void.

Pick 1 sounds appealing but shit it carries a lot of expectation and scrutiny. Often pick 1 isn't the best player either (although that's often due to him playing for Carlton or melbourbe).

Yeah, agree with this. As our deficit is in midfielders, we should get one with some exposed form and a non pick 1 early first rounder to get another class midfield player with pace. Need that more than Tom Boyd irrespective of how good he turns out to be.

If bud does goes via free agency, my dream is that he signs in secret just before GF and then in game goes beserk in the most illegal way on our opponents, guarantees us our 2nd flag, gets 132 week suspension and gets money for nothing and cripples GWS as a result.

Not sure if this has been asked before but why can't Buddy simply accept a one year contract at Hawthorn for less than the GWS offer, then agree to be traded to GWS for the $$ he negotiates with them and the picks/players we do a deal for? In that circumstance how does the contract amount he gets paid by GWS get determined?
One would hope Buddy would do the right thing by both parties as far as he's able and/or it's possible under the system.

I think you can't be traded in the first year after signing a contract.

Dont discount GWS trading for a possible buddy compo pick

From the expansion point of view its one thing GWS getting buddy but youd think the -AFL would like to see them trade the future a bit to get competitive now.
The recruiters there have been a bit too cute and they should get a rocket up them

Would a buddy compo pick for another club we just after when their original 1st round pick occurs (i.e not a fixed pick 20 but for say GWS a pick 2 if they win the spoon)?

Hmm that's really interesting the bolded part. IF he goes, I hope that happens. I would be pissed off at him if he didn't try and get Hawthorn a good deal

Why would GWS give the Hawks pick 1 for Buddy? Only reason that is even plausible is so they can get Buddy on the cheap money wise.....but if its not about money for Buddy why the feck would he go to Western Sydney for?

GWS don't want to give up #1 for Buddy. From some reports they don't even want Buddy. They certainly don't want to pay his salary inside the cap.

The AFL do. They have the means to ensure it. But they cannot afford to be seen (again) to manipulate to a team's advantage.

So they will engineer a trade, Hawthorn will get compensated somewhat, and the story will go away.

Then the AFL are free to top up Franklin's salary to whatever is required.

I expect he will end up signing with Hawthorn for 1.1, then immediately traded to GWS. Shortly thereafter AFL will provide a 4-600k marketing ambassador position.

I think it was mentioned quite a few pages back, or I possibly heard it somewhere else, that apparently the AFL isn't too keen on contributing ambassadorial money to Buddy's contract if GWS are going to take him from us via free agency. Something about not wanting it to contribute to the growing questions over their integrity given situations like the Bombers being so high profile. So basically what has been allegedly been said to GWS is that if you want that ambassadorial money to help lure Buddy to GWS then you'll have to get him via a trade with Hawthorn so that they are reasonably compensated. Which is also apparently why Sheedy suddenly changed his tune about Buddy a few weeks back about him not being the be all and end all and why Jack Riewoldts name has started popping up more lately.

I don't like where this is going - I don't want Gary Ablett at Hawthorn.
