Free Agency, the salary cap and Chip Frawley

Yes, and may it live on. The NFL and MLB run compensation, while the NBA has a culture of sign-and-trade as well as salary cap provisions as compensation. The systems work very well in the NFL and MLB, too.

Not sure you quite understand this.

The NFL caps compensatory picks at a maximum value end of 3rd round pick.

This compensation is only worked out once all free agency movement is done, ie the compensatory pick value is worked out for the combination of all your comings and goings.

Frankly, it has absolutely no place in our game, outside of maybe a end of second round pick for teams losing legitimate stars of the competition.

While it seems a bit unfair when it's all laid out, I think it's a bit of a "tough luck" scenario.
Having the rules cover the entire contract wouldn't work, since the CBA is a yearly thing. Even if that weren't the case, it would just end up in clubs signing young players to front loaded contracts until they get to their 6th or 7th year, then giving them a back loaded contract so they qualify for restricted free agency in the future. That would go against the whole "player welfare" part of FA that was a big thing anyway, giving the player the freedom to go where they want. Some players might be able to see into the future knowing they want to stay, but there would be plenty who wouldn't.

I think a point here is missed.

CBA is now 95-100% now?

Thats going to be a problem for shit teams having to pay shit players big money... or front loading.

eg St Kilda/Melb players getting the same as Hawthorns etc
Yup, happened a couple of years ago and got swept under. The cap for 2014 is $9.63mil with the minimum $9.15mil. So we're talking $500,000 difference in spend. It's stupid.

See now thats a thread where you would've got support.

Free agency question:

Do contract options count when calculating compo?
Ask st kilda/dal santo. It's a bit of a rort that clubs can push players out the door and then every other team in the league suffers due to picks being created.

Not a dig at the saints, all clubs look to use the intricacies of the rule to their advantage.

Is Mitch Clark really on $700k a year? What a monumental waste of money.
mitch has also started to work for the club.
to earn his paycheck for not appearing on the field, the dees have ordered him to become the clubs fulltime camera expert,he runs classes for players on tuesdays, fridays and weekend workshops for supporters who dont want to go to the game.
this is regarded as a win win for the club.

you would think frontloading or one year contracts. Forcing a club to overpay players because of a "rule" is ridiculous.

I'm asking if Frawley signs a 2 year deal with a 2 year option (which he can choose to option a week after the trade period) will the option years count towards the cap?

If it doesn't count - this will mean that Melbourne won't get a first round compo - so his new club is one spot higher in the draft (which could be a huge deal if it's from pick 5 to pick 4).

Do we see him now titled as "Camera Ambassador" ?.

Sounds a tad "unfair" but I don't think the Dees are a club that complain about being dealt a "rough deal" by the AFL when you consider everything they have received and gotten away with in recent years.

See the tanking saga where they received a slap on the wrist, despite all that unfolded and the compo received for Tom Scully that was ridiculous that he was classed in the same category as the game's greatest player Gary Ablett. Now, they are being bankrolled by the AFL and despite being "broke" they can 'afford" to make Paul Roos the highest paid coach in the game.

I wouldn't be complaining if I were a Dees fan.
FWIW I'm not phased as to what happens with Frawley, he's been a great defender for our club, and he's had to deal with more pressure than most other defenders do in their whole career, if he want's to leave fair enough. But this tanking crap is the biggest wank you'll ever hear. How a team could be charged with tanking, a charge, that only came up because of an ex-player came out and said it is a joke. And if you say it wasn't just because of Mclean, well then explain to me why the Pies weren't dealt with the same way. They lost their last 8 games after showing very good signs previously, with them notching 4 wins from their last 7 games. They, like Melbourne also lost a match with few seconds left due to a goal after the siren. How one is charged, and the other isn't is way beyond me. The simple reason is probably due to the AFL covering themselves for the silly rule placement put forth in the first place. You think Melbourne made a big deal out of that situation, imagine what Eddie Mcguire would've been like. Whole lee sheet. Same can be said for Carlton.

Fitzroy would have LOVED 1/2 of the help the D's have had…..

GO Catters
