The argument is that it is necessary because the AFL differs from other sports in that clubs aren't allowed to trade contracted players without their consent.
The salary cap floor also limits poorer clubs ability to transform their list.

If we accept the above 2 limiting aspects, I think they really need to get rid of Restricted Free Agency, so we don't get debacles like Ben McKay and Gresham, where unreasonable contracts are manufactured in order to get clubs better compo.
And/or, I would change compo to only 3 bands to be taken End of 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds.
FA compensation *s over 16 clubs in every deal. That would be lessened if the picks were all moved to the end of the round.
Would also be lessened if the acquiring club had to pay an appropriate point value. I think limiting the compensation pick to end/start of round is also a factor. Would be far better to have a formula that calculated a point value, and the compensation kicked in at whatever the point value comes in at. Then the acquiring team pays those points (via picks). This would ensure the other 16 clubs aren't disadvantaged.

Bang on.

Even small adjustments to the cap floor rules would be beneficial to lower clubs.

Removing the ability to match bids would be such an easy, in offensive way to smooth out the process.

If we can’t come to an agreement with the Saints before the end of trade period, I’d really love to see Paddy sign a 1 year extension, rather than go to the draft.

Can’t see it happening but I’d be frustrated if we lost him for free. Especially with SOS playing hardball and supposedly threatening the draft.

I don’t understand why clubs throw contracts in front of players and then choose to play hardball in trade negotiations.

Glad we have Austin now.

Ben McKay is quite durable compared to one D. Cuningham who has played 18 less games in the same period.
Yeah, but we didn't just hand Cuningham a $4.8M contract.

Oh Essington... 🤣🤣🤣

Don't think Austin would, he needs the list spot...

I don't buy Dow not feeling valued by St Kilda. I'm sure he still feels more valued by them then us.

I just think if SOS wants to give us nothing well then there is no point making a deal. I mean Austin would be prepared to accept just about anything usable.

What mess, and how of our own making?
Selecting him in the first instance, investing heavily in a contested mid and then trading in multiple contested mids, three coaches in four years, playing him when he had not earned it, not playing him when had earned it, not trading him last year when contracted and then not playing him, dropping him when performing well and generally broadcasting to the AFL world that this young man is free to good home.

Something like that.

Harrison Petty plays a few games up forward and has two good games and now he's a messiah for team's forward lines.

I don't get it.

Weitering experiement went the same way. Scored a few goals then doughnuts.

If Melbourne were smart they'd sell him while he's hot for a first.

But then they'd have to find a forward....

In fairness he was given plenty of opportunity in his early years. We were only forced to trade in those mids because he failed to show enough. Then when he started getting himself closer to the level required he had to deal with that increased competition.

I don't think you can blame the Dow situation 100% on the club. Had plenty of chances to succeed. Hopefully he does at the saints
