Selecting him in the first instance, investing heavily in an a contested mid and then trading in multiple contested mids, three coaches in four years, playing him when he had not earned it, not playing him when had earned it, not trading him last year when contracted, dropping him when performing well and generally broadcasting to the AFL world that this young man is free to good home.

Something like that.
there's a bit to unpack there.

It's our mess, in relation with the trade negotiations with St Kilda, because:
  1. we drafted him...?
  2. we traded in multiple contested mids (at a time when the game was more stoppage-heavy, before the stand rule, kick out changes and overall rotations reduction) and Dow also wasn't performing well enough for us to not be interested in bolstering that part of the ground?
  3. we've certainly gone through some coaches, but the later three have all preferred others playing on-ball ahead of Dow. Shold we have found another coach because they'd play Dow?
  4. we didn't force him into the side, either as an extra (sometimes 6th) on-baller or try to squeeze him into a half forward role?
  5. not trading him last year, when he was on the table but no one wanted him or his comparatively high salary?
  6. dropping him when others who were rated higher and have played better footy returned to the team?

Any chance we look at Schulz? If the Pies can't reach a deal Schulz would be a real goal kicking threat in our forwardline. Would make us so dangerous.

Martin McKay E.Hollands
Schultz Charlie Motlop

It's very rare a player backflips after picking a club of choice. Best hope is the trade falls through and we have a crack at him next year as a UFA. I suspect we would have already been looking at him.

Schulz wants easy success, im not fussed he wants to go there. pies won't win another flag for a while

Don't think Schulz is much of an upgrade on either Owies or Durdin (in time).

Schulz gets up the ground more, hence more disposals....

Asked if the Suns were open to moving Hollands on, Cameron told SEN on Monday morning: “Yeah we are – and there's a number of reasons around it. “First of all, to play Elijah (at AFL level), we've played him out of position a little bit so that we could get him in and play games

Geez thats some openness by Craig Cameron, unusual to hear a list manager talk about a player before they've been traded in that way

You reckon he is 100% gone based on that

Have to think so, sounds like a 3rd rounder will get it done based off those comments. Sounds like someone they are happy to go

Sounds like he's on decent pay too which is another incentive for them to dump him.

Goldcoast for many years were giving all their 1st round picks 2 year extensions straight up on great coin to lock them in for 4 years.

Probably on 400-500k next year. We probably give him a 3 year contract and smooth some of that money out.

We didn't opt to not trade him last year. We allowed him to explore his options and ultimately he elected to stay.

In fairness he was given plenty of opportunity in his early years. We were only forced to trade in those mids because he failed to show enough. Then when he started getting himself closer to the level required he had to deal with that increased competition.

I don't think you can blame the Dow situation 100% on the club. Had plenty of chances to succeed. Hopefully he does at the saints
No great arguments with that...Paddy has the biggest hand to play in his own development. But it is easy to kick the player on the way out as not good enough. As footy fans it's par for the course. I just think it worth observing that he's had three coaches in relatively quick succession with approached ranging from pure development to win now. His path to consistent AFL footy has had roadblocks in the form of additional competition for spots. It's arguable that there has been some inconsistent messaging at MC. It's arguable that the club has a poor track record of developing mids. His biggest red flag from day one was endurance and it's arguable the club has failed in developing that. And for reasons outside of form, it's arguable that he was only ever going to be break glass in case of emergency this year...his papers were stamped long ago, and everyone in the AFL world knows that.

I just think it's a bit rich to turn around and then whinge about fair compensation (while rubbing our hands together at getting Hollands for unders). The mess is largely of our own making.

Harrison Petty plays a few games up forward and has two good games and now he's a messiah for team's forward lines.

I don't get it.

Weitering experiement went the same way. Scored a few goals then doughnuts.

If Melbourne were smart they'd sell him while he's hot for a first.

But then they'd have to find a forward....

Weitering is a spud..couldn't even make the AA. Delist!

He didn't receive an offer that would absorb his current salary, that's why he elected to stay

So Saints now think he is worth this figure or he's taking a pay cut? Interesting that his 10 games this year has gained him more interest, but we have people here suggesting he's worth no more than last season as though that run of games changes nothing.

Saints aren't offering him the money per year, he was on with us this year

While he has improved in a couple of areas, it wouldn't move the trade value needle all that much think it gets done for the value of a pick in the 50-60 region

Would we even use such a pick? In a draft where there are estimates of maybe 45 picks used, a pick in the 50-60 range is worthless.

It's not a mess, it's just how the cards fall in this game....

I think he showed in his late season games the endurance thing is sorted...

How many clubs would offer him a spot as a starting mid? A few, but not many.
