If we could move into the top 10 imagine it would involve our future first and both picks in the 20s I would guess.

But would love us to have a crack at getting Nick Watson or Nate Caddy. Nick probably less likely but both are that 5-10 range.

I’m open to anything Juddy but my feel is if we can get players in now the better. A pick 9 who is a gun will make a real difference in a year or two and we are in the window. Next year we will have Campo boys.

A top 10 pick now could be exactly what we need

And just as important as having the picks, we have a list manager who he can fully trust with the picks.

Having two seconds and three 4ths should be enough for an exemption
You wouldn't need an exemption if you got a 2nd back for the 1st.
You would need an exemption to trade out our 1st with nothing coming back, but, I think we would be a reasonable chance. Those 2 extra 4ths for a total of 3 from teams who didn't make the 8 might be enough to cover the missing 3rd.

Any team trading out of the top 10 this year is going to exact a heavy toll.

Geelong seem to be the most likely candidate. Suggestions they want Sanders, and if he's not there at 8 they may be willing to move back if the deal favours them.

Now, I know Geelong don't need points - so don't come at me on that front. I am going to use the points to roughly illustrate how I think a deal might look if we were to trade with them.

Pick 8 - 1551 pts, but it's going to be Pick 10 by the time bids for Walters and Read are factored in - takes it to 1395pts.

Our Pick 22 is likely to end up at 27 once all first round bids are accounted for. Similarly, our Pick 28 will be around Pick 30. They come in at around 1332pts. So we're short on value, and that's without even considering that we'd be expected to overpay to move up into the top 10.

Our future first could fairly be assumed to land around the same spot next year - Pick 16 before any academy or compensation pick adjustments (which can't be predicted yet). That's 1067pts.

22 (actually 27) plus our future first is technically overs, but only by the equivalent of a very late third rounder. I don't think that gets is done.

27 + 30 + our future first seems more likely, but then given it's overs by a late first rounder which I'd suggest is too steep a price to pay.

Geelong also have Pick 25 (will end up at 28), but given it's between our picks I'm not sure involving it helps the situation at all.

We do know we likely want points for next year though. Geelong will back themselves to make the 8 again (unless they plan on doing a little sneaky tanking), so their future second would maybe be around the Pick 31-32 mark (allowing for the NM compo picks already awarded).

So maybe something like 27 + 30 + future first (~16) for 10 (Caddy) and a future second (~31).

If we want Geelongs pick we are better off waiting till draft night. Their pick will likely be the last of the top group of players

If the guy left is one they like then the price of the pick will be out of reach. If it's not however, the price will be more reasonable.

A bit like us in 2019 when we got left with Flanders as the last guy in that top group. We didnt happen to rate him so moved on the pick for 17 and 22 which wasn't a ridiculous price.

Also, guarantees a guy we want is still there as there will be guys in that top group we don't want either.

If we can get the Cats’ pick now for a price we believe to be acceptable then we should go for it. We can always trade it down if the player we wants isn’t there and get back to something similar to what we have now anyway. The top ten will shift a bit in the coming weeks so we can’t assume someone we have in our top 5 won’t be there with Pick 8/10. I think just go for it. Trade the future first and the two second rounders and get someone who could very well be best 22 by the pointy end of the 2024 season.

The problem with this is that we'll only get one player from the draft this year

I would rather we keep our current picks and draft two players this year; and leaving F1 for more flexibility next year
