Review Freo Get Stomped by GWS

Something Bucks mentioned about us worried me a bit - he said he was shocked our boys were so quiet.

We won that game he watched but I think that can be a positive sometimes, ie resilient and stoic - but others times it leads to rudderless, leaderless trash.

I've suspected for some time Fremantle is a team of introverts, with JL and Pearce the biggest and quietest of them all.

Has little to do with skill and strategy but it might partly explain how quickly we fall back into our shells.

Interesting observation of an observation!

From my understanding Acres and Logue were the extroverts.

You need the village idiots in all walks of life.

Just a poor effort all round really.
started badly and it continued.
Credit to gws, they simply outplayed and out ran us.
We miss Darcy.
Not a huge fan of sturt, but he went just okay today and deserves another game.
I think erasmus may offer more over a whole game than fyfe. Fyfe to sub would be sensible....bring him on for one 1/4.
Highlight for me was that we took off to chicken treat early and I missed the last quarter :)

Lost at the selection table, should have played Reidy to allow Jackson to play 3rd tall and big bodied mid.
Walters was playing on himmelberg Ffs and we tried to long bomb it on his head!
Henry, Switowski. Schultz and Walters is too many smalls and tackles were easily brushed aside all game, Ryan on Greene was a ridiculous choice, he’d have more chance against Keeffe than Greene.
NOD stunk up the joint again.
Midfield was absolutely pants again, and not just at stoppages, our defensive set up on transition was putrid as GWS had players free in the centre constantly, whatever Corey is setting up isn’t working, especially without ruck dominance from Darcy.

Key moments and points that stood out for mine:
(1) The ground seemed fine for GWS but it was treacherous for us; not sure why that was the case, but our players played as it it was going to rip with every move. Regardless the GWS midfielders worked really hard defensively, whereas on our turn our players will slipping over trying to make ground.
(2) It felt like Jackson couldn't win a tap and it just got into the GWS midfielders hands first way too often.
(3) Young kicking across half back into the centre, not going near anyone of our players and it getting picked off and resulting in a goal. I know he and Clark have a license to play aggressively and on instinct, but there is aggressive and then there is suicidal. Having said that I thought he lifted in the second half
(4) O'Driscoll getting the ball at one point on half forward (I think that was the second quarter) and I was thinking "please don't bomb it in! please!", then he bombs it in, it gets picked off and taken down the other end for a goal. Like Young though, I thought he put a lot of effort into the second half (his disposal was still pretty bad however).

I find it funny when a team loses by 70 points and people think bringing in several debutants is going to fix that.

I don't disagree entirely, but at the same time the "play as many games as you need to get your confidence right" "back the boys in" approach feels equally unsustainable.

Turnovers killed us, meaning players like Banners. We missed Aish’s composure in the backline. Forward 50 entries we s**t. No heart, no effort
Yep and I agreed 👍

Turn overs in the back 50 was horrific. Ball bombs into dockers back 50, bounces off a dockers defender and a GWS player sweeps it up and runs to an open goal.

How did Erasmus look in the last qtr? Looks like he had quite a few touches, any quality there?

There needs to be a limit though. NOD has played poorly enough for several games now, even when we were winning, that I feel like he needs a break. Banfield has also contributed close to nothing for a couple weeks, and was only really playing because we were a forward down all those weeks. He can come out.

But banfield will be replaced by Darcy. NOD with Aish or Erasmus. Ideally Henry comes out too (he was far from our worst today, but offers very little defensively) and both Aish and Erasmus play. Frederick was close to playing and is much more dynamic than Sturt too. I suspect he was playing injured vs Richmond too. The week off should hopefully get him fit again. Sturt kicked a couple goals but also sprayed a couple and that handball missing walters was unforgiveable. Also did that with Taylor stuck to Amiss all day and Himmelberg manning up on Sonny.

Fyfe has also been underperforming recently. But I would still keep him in because I don't think anyone else takes his spot.

If healthy I would like to see

In: Darcy, Aish, Erasmus, Frederick
Out: Banfield, Henry, NOD, Sturt

We don't need to be bringing in WAFL players to make guys accountable.

It is not about bringing them in to fix anything. It is the fact that we have many ineffectual players that are offering nothing and trying other players to see if we can get more output. It is also about integrity of selection.

But suggesting someone like Kuek come in when Darcy is coming back and we'll get to return to the triple J structure is just people not putting any thought into their suggestions.

That was just...sad. Worst game I've seen in person since "that" game in 2009 we're never permitted to mention.
You mean that 2009 game vs the crows where we kicked 1.7.13?

I was there. Saw out the full 4 quarters.

Meh there were games in our 2017-20 period where we kicked 3-5 goals. I didn't care after the 2nd half of the season as we already got our 3-5 wins in the 1st half of those seasons.

Just relax.

Inconsistency is going to happen. Just enjoy the ride.

We'll be competing for top 4 next year.
yeah, right........ how many times over the many years have I heard that!

Nothing ever changes with us, just as long as we are doing the critical things like slagging off at our major sponsor etc.
I mean we can't even get our guernseys right, what happened to the white away strip?

I still reckon the main problem is lack of real class, to win we basically have to play above ourselves.

No good talking out the kick ins, Longmuir is too dumb otherwise he would have done something about it already. Maybe we should start calling the kick ins "the contest" and they may fix it.

Do I sound upbeat?

I like you and I know I will definitely get a straight out answer from you.

What was worst bit about today's loss?

The lack of effort or fight in the dockers today or the amount of turnovers that lead to GWS goals?

Both are bad.
Has to be the lack of effort. That should be a non negotiable. You can live with skill errors and mistakes but not to be outrun and outworked like we were today.

The problem here is that there is no clear solution.

One of the commentators today said that JL has to go all in now and for the rest of the season. Its time to make some brutal changes starting with some wildcard replacements such as Keuk, Worner etc.

In the end I was hoping we would get a fair basting to trigger some real changes.

Our players got too relaxed getting their jimmys whacked over the bye.

He looked ok. He's obviously a work in progress, but the way the season has gone, now is the time to work on that progress. Get some games into Erasmus, Worner, Kuek, Stanley and Reidy.
