Some are saying according to the rules we must use 2 picks in the draft. If correct we won't be upgrading anymore rookies.

Will be interesting to see what we pick up with #79 if thats the case especially considering a lot are saying the talent drops away after the first 25-30.

I would be targeting a 200 cm+ project player personally.

Or perhaps we could go for he who's name must not be spoken although he had seldom been heard of prior to playing an outstanding final for us in the VFL.

Also some have suggested re-drafting Gillies. Considering there may not be much talent left so late in the draft it wouldn't be the worst move in the world.

Although some posters are certain that we can use 2 out of 3 picks for rookie upgrades, I, for one, am not so sure.

There could be an unexpected de-listing leading to another rookie upgrade, but that would be a surprise.

Yes, I would like an answer on this from someone who actually knows what they're talking about, and not from all the usual suspects (you know who you are!).

At 203cm Darcy Fort would be the perfect project player for the club to pick up with 79. He is also a local Geelong boy too which is a bonus. I have been on him since Turbocat posted the Geelong Addy article about him earlier in the season.

From a most of the phantom drafts I've seen he will probably go late second or early in the third round. Sounds perfect but might be out of our reach.

What about 16? Rare to get a LOCAL project quality ruckman.

Be a brave call to go after another 200 cm+ ruckman after Simpson taking so long to develop. But if that's what Wells goes after with pick 16 I won't question him lol.

Walker wont be upgraded. Geelong actually almost traded pick 16 for picks 25 and 26 at the death yesterday to the very desperate Saints but Wet Toast wouldn't do the Brown deal which is what Stkilda wanted pick 16 for.

Would have been another great Wells trade and indicates that we will draft 2 'new' players into the club

Well, that near-deal indicates that Wells thinks there's not going to be anything special available at 16, but there are a couple still worth having in the 20s. It doesn't say he thinks there is anything worth having at 79.

not necessarily just means he likes getting two for the price of one. Going down 8 spots but getting and extra quality pick would have been worth it

Apologies for flogging this horse, but...
Does anyone have some official information on whether we can use 2 of our required 3 live picks to upgrade rookies?

If I am correct in my thinking, then the answer to this means the difference between
a) being able to keep one of Simpkin or Sheringham* on our list, if we wish
b) losing both of them and having to draft whatever is left at pick 59, like it or not

I had a scratch around and it appears that the exact draft rules are another opaque facet of AFL Pty Ltd.

* I use these two names because the BF consensus is that they are the two rookies about to walk the plank.

Edit. 2nd pick is 59, not 79 as I originally posted

I just can't see us picking a ruck in the draft. Not this year.
Simpson, West and Vardy are all young enough. And we can cherry pick from free agency next year if needed.

To be honest I'm not sure what we need.
Possibly a lock down back man type.

Sounds a good type , have not seen him myself. Ideal Rookie , whether he gets there or not is another issue.
With HM being brought in as a 28 year old , a long term Rookie ruck would be a good fit.

Has a brother who was a KPD from memory. : (edit Knightmare rates him as p26 in his Power rankings for 2013)

Edit info from Knightmare :

Darcy Fort (VIC – Ruck)
Height: 203cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB:
Recruited from: Geelong Falcons
Style:
Player comparison:
Range: 45-rookie
Profile: I've been really encouraged with Fort's ability to take a contested grab and as the season has progressed we have seen him present as more of a marking threat around the ground. Fort is a very willing tackler and this is an area of his game that has shown great growth throughout the year and has in recent weeks has been a feature of his game. Tapwork good and like the rest of his game also seems to be improving rapidly, getting a hand on more balls but also showing that he can tap to the advantage of his midfield group. Fort contributes well around the ground and gets involved in the play. With Fort you just feel there is something to work with and from all reports he is a hard worker and add to that the strong improvement he has shown throughout the season and I see a lot more growth left in his game.

You can understand that they are in their window and don't want to trade KPD depth but pick 16 and Cripps for a very average player in Brown is enormous.

They have Glass, McKenzie and Schofield as key backs. There were a lot of depth KPD available for practically nothing this year. Geez they could have had a crack at someone like Stef Martin who they could plug in anywhere to cover injuries and we could have chucked in Gillies for free.

Yeah , I think we were being strong with Gillies , but p16 + Cripps ... they have backed themselves to convince him to stay. The Saints will now look for short term alternatives , while they and other clubs will keep in his ear if he doesn't get games.

I see Pettard has been released by Melbourne. Always thought he had a lot of talent, am sure he will get picked up before we get a chance with our late pick.

I was thinking maybe we should gamble and take the overrated kid people call the next buddy. I know he is no buddy, the reason I was thinking him is because he seems like a mobile CHF. Good height and runs a lot, and now with Pods coming to an end, Mitch Brown not knowing what will happen, seams like a reasonable choice (unless Vardy will be the CHF). What do people think about that?

Vardy, Brown, Walker and Kersten I think we have CHF well and truly covered. Pick 16 will be a mid as there are many quality mids on offer in this draft and there will still be available for us.

I tend to think that Wells will seek out a good mid too.

I want either:
A big bodied midfielder
A medium defender
A big bodied KP defender

Stringer even though he played forward this year I think would be perfect. Most think if he sorts out the injuries he'll be a midfielder and I am told he's very good not just as a forward but as a defender as well.

Macrae, Vlastuin & Wright the others I think we should be looking at. Bigger midfileders that can play down back. Menzel is less of a need as a forward that can move into the midfield but perhaps talent alone demands we consider him.

With Caddy though perhaps we could be looking at a KP defender like Tanner Smith or Ploughman?
we got A Caddy, B Rivers and we have C Bathie in development. You are happy?
