Well done Jester.

First things first. You can eliminate anyone who's first name doesn't start with a J. That's how we roll. :)

I thought they were cousins?

Yeah my bad, mistype.

Still the point is that with them being related, and with the way Jamie left, most clubs on this side of the country will view Patrick as a flight risk.

I'd like to pick him up but I think it's unlikely.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

FWIW, my wishlist:

Acres, Freeman, Gardiner, Tsitas and throw in Christensen Jnr for the romantic notion of him getting to play with his brother.

If we can grab 3 of those blokes I'll be rapt.

Would absolutely love Scharenberg, but it's highly unlikely he will get to us, unless we trade someone out to obtain a high pick which is extremely doubtful.

Not that I am anyone but a reader of the talent at the draft - I think those names sound good to me.

But as it stands we just do not have the picks to get 3 of these guys - maybe 2 of your top 4. Even that maybe hopeful. We will get a chance at Tsitas but Wells may not want use our first draft pick to make sure we get him. More likely use it on Acres or Freeman and the whether we have the pick to get Tsitas is questionable.

Secondly we seem to rarely pick who Wells takes. But surely it will be a strong mid or two.

thejester, fantastic preview.
I agree with most of your ratings.

Just one question, how come no Lewis Taylor in the run down? height? because I rate him very highly.

Well partly cause I don't think he'll last to our pick. I think he's a good player, but I'm just not sure how his game will translate to senior level. He runs himself into trouble a stack but because he's so agile can turn and twist and go backwards and sideways. Not sure he'll be able to do that at senior level. He can clearly play but I dunno, would be slightly wary of spending a first rounder on him.

I think the closest I have ever got was when I thought we would take Duncan with our first pick and we took Menzel instead.
Honestly, I rekon Wellsy does it just to **** with the heads of everyone present on draft day.

You are aware Cripps is Jamie's brother.

Every Vic club will view him as a flight risk and I doubt he will be drafted outside of WA.

174 cm.73 kgs.
Taylor lives the maxim that if you're good enough, you're tall enough. He plays with undeniable energy and enthusiasm. The midfielder gets the ball and runs with it, chips it to set up others, and kicks goals. He was suspended for striking and missed Vic Country's loss to South Australia, but came back in the last two games and dominated.
Not my work I stole it.:D

Don't mind a young bloke with a bit of mongrel.
I recall him getting suspended for belting Cooney..?

I'm not going to pretend to have a comprehensive knowledge of the potential draftees, though someone like Crouch sounds like he'd be a very good get and may be attainable if we trade Varcoe, or move up a few spots in the first round by trading our pick and West.

A key defender (a stopper, rather than a Harry Taylor-type rebounder) would be nice, but my thing with key defenders is a bit similar to the theory of taggers, that I reckon the really good ones would usually have to be converted to some extent, once they start playing open-age football. Because I reckon if you're completely focused on stopping someone else, you probably aren't one of the elite talents yourself.

Anyway, if we assume that we don't move at all in the draft order and there are no absolute blockbuster trades (which totally change the make-up of our team), I'd suggest we should do something like the following:

Pick 15: best inside midfielder available.
Pick 32: ruckman who will get three years (minimum) to develop: Cameron, Nankervis, Lobb
Pick 50: Wouldn't mind someone like McStay here. I think we should give Sully a go, but he seems more like a pick #68 or rookie list prospect to me. Perhaps someone like Honeychurch or Christensen Jr. would be worthwhile if still on the board here, then use #68 on Sully.
Do you have an opinion on somebody who has proven to be so damn effective in that type of role that it would be almost imperious of the powers that be to insist on trying to develop them somewhere else (with the potential ability to do just that notwithstanding) instead of leaving them in their natural position and developing that strength even more? I don't agree with the premise that a player at junior level only plays in defence if he's in the lower echelon of the best 22.

According to one of the phantom drafts I just read we end up with Darcy Gardiner, Tstias and another Bundy (brother - looks tiny at 66 kgs). How would those who follow such things see these pick ups ?
All Geelong boys. Great sentiment there, and if we could somehow manage to wrangle another Geelong boy in Taylor Adams onto our list I'd be as happy as a pig in its own faeces.

Hope Tsitas - hope he is around for second pick.

Was hoping we might get a better second round pick re our trading or for West or even compo for losing Chappy. From the phantom drafts I read Tsitas maybe around for pick 30. Not sure we can get him then.

But being a local boy and they say has a fair bit of grunt and aggression about him - I think he sounds good.

How many Falcons are out there these days. Its like factory down at the Falcons.
No Jon! The only factory is the Calder Cannons Football Factory... haven't you been listening to BT!?

That sounds exactly like what Billie Smedts did at junior level, which has now been his unravelling at AFL level. Billie has the talent to work through it IMO, and will end up being a great player for us, but it'll just take time.

I remember reading a while back someone on the phantom draft threads comparing Lewis Taylor to Boomer Harvey. Perhaps it's just their similar dimensions and all, but this individual honestly believed that the guy will turn out to be an absolute little superstar. What do you think of that comparison?

Sounds like Billie Smedts again. Not saying either cant make it but the step up in class has caught Billie short on many occasions and his disposal is either effected or negated all together.

I dont think we need another of that type of player. Its one thing to have the skills, its completelt another to recognise when they wont get you out of jail every time. In space, he moves very well and his vision has led to some great taps to advantage....

One is enough for mine however...

Go Catters

edit - didnt mean to repeat above sentiment but totally agree..

Really felt for St.Kilda when that happened. Drafted with their 1st round pick (#24) then left them after his 2 year contract was up. Clearly never wanted to be there. It must put recruiters and clubs off picking up interstate draftees sometimes. Can understand why Melbourne selected Watts ahead of Naitanui, they were clearly worried about Nic Nat being a flight risk. We've been lucky with all the SA/WA guys on our list, I guess being part of a successful club helps.

Super work thejester :thumbsu:.

Fraser fort would be nice.Agreed best mid at first pick also sully would be good also at a latter pick.Marty pask said sheed kicking is not that great matt crouch might be a goer if this there at 15.(if geelong still have that pick).

This ^. Not sure whether anyone on this board knows Fort, but I do. He goes to my school, played footy with him as well at South. Fantastic proposition, can fill our key position back void. Projected to go between pick 40 and 60, we have pick 50 don't we? His disposal needs work IMO and needs to bulk up a little but everything else is there, great contested mark, good decision maker, can swing forward and kick a goal. Has a good vertical too, he took a mark on my shoulders at training once (I'm 186cm).

Listed at 196cm and 84kg. Anyone keen?

Brother of Darcy I assume? I saw that Fraser was listed as a 196cm defender from the Falcons earlier in the year and I got interested. From what you say, he sounds like a good project player with a fair bit of upside. Poor disposal is a concern, but perhaps with a bit of work he'd be able to fix that. If he's a genuine "stopper" in the mould of a Lonergan replacement, then so long as he can play well on the gorillas, every other deficiency is secondary to his primary role. But yeah, I wouldn't be upset to see us pick him with our 3rd rounder.

Some phantom drafts seem to give him a fair rap. I am hoping we get an under 40 pick for West that may secure this guy as he does sound like someone worth a look.

Pretty sure the first 2 picks maybe on mids unless someone slips thru we did not expect to.
