I'm not surprised by the vitriol, but I share your minority position on this match, CC.

Port's third quarter was immense. It had the lot—momentum, manic physical pressure, slick and quick ball movement. It was a 'premiership quarter', to use the old parlance. But despite the domination, they kicked just three goals and won the quarter by only two. It would have been an abject procession against almost any other team, but we absorbed the pressure well and were still in it by 3Q time. There was no capitulation.

We didn't lose around the ground, but in converting opportunities. Zip from six to Hawkins, three of which were there to be kicked. We had four more scoring shots than Port.

And it was interstate final—a finals win on the road is a rare bird. I didn't expect it, and overall thought they showed plenty of grit and metal.

Agreed - we're not quite done yet.
I'm no gerbil-faced optimist, but I can't complain about what I watched tonight.

I've registered my doubts as to Chris Scott's ability to build the list and get them playing a brand that stands up in Finals, but I actually thought our style of play was only a few conversions away from being justified tonight, much to my surprise.

Your correct - however the cupboard is pretty bare -there is not much to bring in

Seeing your a neutral - gives us your HONEST opinion on Geelongs game style - do you like it - are they good to watch - bad to watch - terrible to watch

Tells us what you actually think - not just for the likes etc

I actually thought you were pretty damn good tonight and how you managed to stay in the game for so long is a real credit to your team defence.

I understand the frustration of losing a QF so not surprised to see the comments in here.

Henderson comeback was really something played one of his finest games bottom line is Hawkins needs help so i was really surprised to see you omit Ratugolea as i thought against the Richmond game he took some very good marks, Stanley however was serviceable.

You really needed more from Miers, Dahlhaus, Ablett and Rohan.

One thing I will say is that I can't understand why we went away from our game plan that seemed to serve us so well early/mid season. At that point I thought it was the first time I had seen a clear game plan from Scott and it was working. The slow it down, chip sideways, keepings off type of game plan. I haven't seen that for 6 weeks and I don't really understand why tbh. I might be reading it all wrong, but I can't work out why we wanted to play quickly when to me that slow play was working so well. It seemed that no-one could touch us when we played that way, but I haven't seen a lot of it since. Others on here are saying the slow play is what cost us, but I didn't see it tbh. I though we went way too quick and it didn't work for us.

Anyway, at least we've given ourselves a 2nd chance. I'm not confident at all, but who knows - we're still in it - just.
Teams are onto it. They’re quick to Block up space and there is no chip kick into the corridor. So it’s just back half chip kicks followed by long kicks down the line. Hawks 2019 did this to us still nothing has changed.

It was - and i thought they should have been alot further ahead at 3qtr time . And Geelongs 3rd qtr was pathetic - it was raw for all to see - the mistakes - handpassing to blokes about a foot away . Geelong fell to bits in the 3rd qtr - you can sugar coat it any way you like - but thats the bottom line

Not that dissappointed ( and good luck to Port and Bris ) because Richmond are so far superior -. Dish up that 3rd qtr against the Tigers and it would be a massacre

Sadly this season is practically over.
It would require a miracle from here.

I wish I could say it was just a bad day for some players.
Sure, luck and free kicks would have helped
However premiership teams don't rely on luck.
The truth is we played to our ability and game plan, and it failed.
It will be a huge ask to make big changes now.

Short quick ball movement works... as Port proved
This was the Hinkley game style that won the Cars 3 flags.
The fast break game plan is working for all the top teams
It was how we played against Saints and Port earlier this season.

Chris Scott has a defensive mindset.
His tempo game plan is designed to control the ball movement.
It has been found wanting in the finals for a few years now.
The back-line needs a major overhaul next season.
Bring in new defensive and midfield coaches with fresh ideas.
Drop the players that slow the game down and play it safe.
Introduce and persist with fast young attacking players.

Finals footy is played at a faster tempo.
It is clear we have players that can't go up a gear.
Some harsh decisions need to be made with the playing list.
These guys will never be more than Good ordinary players
I am beyond frustrated seeing them get games every week.
We also have a few older champs... some will now retire.
Others will need to be tapped on the shoulder..to make way

It's time to take a step back in the short term, to achieve success
There is a squad of exciting young talented players waiting.
I look forward to watching them progress quickly

I was upset last time we played Port when C-Sott blasted young Gryan
For taking a missed snap rather than passing to an open Rohan.
He was blasted at the Q3 break and started Q4 on the bench.
It was an unnecessary over-reaction instead of a simple finger wag and shrug
Exciting X-factor players play on confidence and instinct....duh!
My fear that he would go into his shell and play safe have proved true.
Scott is reputedly a good people manager... I now wonder.
His coaching as discussed here has been pedestrian rather than innovative.

Perhaps my expectations from experienced professionals are too high

He won 4 clearances behind only Selwood and Danger for us with 6 each. He wasn't brilliant but nobody on the ground really was for either team.

Let's be honest. We played a good team on their home deck and should've been 4 goals up at half time. We weren't and we paid the price. You can wish we were more compared in the 3rd or that particular players contributed more but in the end that game was decided almost entirely by our inability to finish our good work and Menegola and Guthrie weren't too blame there.

This is born out by Olly Wines interview: he basically said Ken was spewing on them at half time.
So he knew what we did, Geelong should have been in front and easily.
Silence that toxic crowd x 4 goals when we had our chances and game definitely takes on a different vibe

we'll all be laughing about this sh*t when Sav cuts us up in a Final in a few years time playing for a different club.

I feel that the likes of Ratugolea & Clark really could have benefited from the competitiveness of the VFL this year and only having the scratch matches for those not playing seniors, has hurt those guys on the fringe

I'm not sure how competitive the scratch matches really get, no coaches want to see their players hurt from those "games", so they may help with gaining fitness & some touch but not in the same way players are pushed in VFL matches

During the season when Ratugolea was down on form, the chance to give him a month in the VFL, really encourage & push him to be the dominant forward is something I feel we missed - not necessarily in terms of marking everything coming his way & kicking 4 goals a match, but in terms of having a presence and continued involvement

His 4th quarter against Richmond was promising - but he lacked presence in his last few games outside of that quarter. Against the Swans (maybe second quarter) he had the chance to lay a serious tackle against either of 2 Swans players, but rather than committing to tackling either he tried corralling both. Even if he gave away a few kick for holding or late contact etc, I would have loved to see him go hard & tackled one of those Swans players to the ground, as it would have been a statement that he's here to play

Hoping he puts in a good summer and we see further development from him next year, and we get to see him take that next step in his career

Situation solved. Scott out. Who’s your pick for next coach? Are you sure they’ll do better? Happy to be missing finals as well? Most other clubs outside Hawthorn, Richmond and WC would have loved to be init every year like us. They are hard to win, but I’m not sure it is the coach that is holding us back. Perhaps we are achieving as well as we can at the minute, at least until the players work out that they have it within them to win one.

At the end the day Scott isn't the answer so why bother continuing with him? 3 and 14 in finals should be enough for any one to realise this, actually somewhat baffling some still rate him. I understand where you are coming from and it's a fair argument re finals and finding a new coach but anything's got to be better and more logical than continuing with something that doesn't work

I didn’t think Port were great but after half time they flogged us around the ball. They should have won by more in the end. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not solely blaming just Guthrie and Menegola (there were others far worse - Miers, Kolo, Rohan, Henry...) - merely pointing out that their games weren’t of the standard that saw them be AA or nominated. On tonight’s performance you wouldn’t think of selecting either in that team.

And in the first half apart from about 5 minutes in the first quarter we flogged then around the ball.

Sure you wouldn't put them in the AA team on that performance. But we had 2 other AA players out there. Danger won a bit of ball but had little overall impact, didn't use it well and was defensively poor while Hawkins had the game on his boot but kicked it away. Why are we going after Guthrie and Menegola for only playing an ok role while Danger was worse and never gets criticised.

4th quarter slight advantage to Port

In the end, Port were able to translate thier dominance on the scoreboard.

Wanna work for me tomorrow?
I'll walk your dog along the beach, furiously throwing stones in the ocean out of anger at tonight.

My choocy boy would love that.

My black boy would ask wheres master rocker and what have you done with him.
That boy would dig me up ..

Open question to everyone: to what extent does a coach impact the mental strength of his players? I don't ask this rhetorically to imply that I know the answer; I'm genuinely unsure which side to come down on and would love to know people's thoughts. Although it would be absurd to suggest that the entire team choked tonight - as I said in an earlier post, if it were the case that *everyone* choked, we'd have lost by 50+ points - it's certainly true that *some* did, and individual players choking in finals has been an issue for years now. I guess it just makes me think, does the coach have any influence over that, and if so, how? Is it possible for a coach to prepare his players well from a strategic and game plan perspective, but not from a mental preparedness perspective?

Hopefully Sav gets to learn forward craft soon. Leading patterns, not getting in the way of Hawk, blocks off the ball etc. He can be anything.

C09 I love ya, but I reckon we have quietly disagreed on Sav all year long.

I have read (I think) all of your posts on the matter and am happy to concede that you have strong evidence and compelling arguments to say that he is not quite ready to produce in a reliable manner.

But my argument hinges on my opinion that I reckon he is a potential match-winner.
I was disappointed to see him left out this week, but didn't feel the need to bleat on about it; I fully understand the reasoning.

Someone mentioned Dermott Brereton making an early impact in Finals earlier in this thread; Sav himself has already had some very promising Finals performances and I reckon his game knows no limits.

Personally I'd be prepared to risk a no-show from Sav on the off-chance that he might win you a game; think: Tom Hawkins circa 2011.

I am happy to acknowledge any counter arguments on the matter and yet I'd still back him in and enjoy watching him go about his business; when he is on - even for 10-minute periods in a match - he is a lot of fun to watch and can have a big impact.

Jordan Clark is a different kettle of fish entirely; I was a huge fan of what he produced in 2019 - when the top-of-the-ladder Cats suddenly went off the boil last year Clark was one of the few players to have maintained the rage, despite his tender years.

This year though he has looked oddly fragile. To me he looks as though he is playing a touch underweight.

I haven't liked what he has produced in the couple of games that he has played in 2020, unfortunately, and that's a shame as his best last year was really fun to watch. Not sure what the future holds for him.

We actually defended really well for a lot of the third quarter and won the ball back in defence. But we were really aggressive taking the game on and turned it over. From memory there was Henry being tackled, Danger with a missed handball and Guthrie, Duncan and Stewart all missing kicks through the middle from defence. The kicks were on but if there's any time we should've gone conservative for a few minutes it was with Port running on top of us.

That 3rd qtr ( which really showed how far off Geel are from a flag ) you could have played the Benny Hill music all qtr long with the Geel mistakes - the bloke slipping over in the backline from a typical Geel shortpass - Kolo dropping that chest mark ( can someone please put him on the 1st available berth on the Spirit of Tasmania to Devenport with a one way ticket - ive had enough of him - please no more - it is beyond torture ) and Eberts goal - you used to see those types of goals at the Little League at h/t

Geel were demolished in the 3rd qtr

At least he provides a proper target and gets the frikken ball unlike the small defensive forwards that are out there somewhere.
5 small 1 tall forwardline what do you expect lol!

Just doesn't stand up to any rational analysis. Our forward line with so many smalls apparently took double the amount of marks inside 50 that they did. Stop riding this horse it is ridiculous. We lost for many reasons and its a long list but having a second tall forward tonight ain't even bloody on it. Poor post

Why was Kolo on Motlop so often?

Anyone got a TL;dr from the Scott presser? Hope the Journos put some actual hard questions to him.
I don’t know why everyone keeps saying kolo was on Motlop? Stewart was on Motlop. And some how Stanley was left on Motlop for motlops first goal. There’s a couple of his goals/goal involvements on the afl website. Have a look. Stanley peels off, Motlop left on his own, goal. Stewart ran off him multiple times to try and get an intercept/effect the contest. Motlop is left unmanned and bang goals and goal assists.

Sav is so raw, and his inexperience makes him look somewhat lazy, and unco-when actually it's unrefined skills (as you say, missing a grounding provided at VFL level). However it's no excuse, if the coaches can see what we do, then they go over every bit of vision with him and take him one on one. I don't think he understands the game well enough, remembering he is a late starter from a different culture. Those coralling moves are basketball moves. He needs much more work. Scott, I believe, is over impressed with Sav's current ability. Although he is a mighty long (but undisciplined) kick, he has not influenced the scoreboard enough or used his bulk to advantage. All in good time, we hope.

The thing I found most frustrating with Motlops first goal is that Stewart was back in the goal square when the ball was kicked in, but then he got sucked in to going for the loose ball, made no impact on the contest and Motlop kicks the goal
