So many players played crap, it can't be all their fault at once. Its the team. And who runs the team? Who is responsoble for preparing them, and making sure they are sharp and energized from the first bounce? We looked demotivated out there.
Hope the Gary Rowan stuff didn’t create this lack of motivation.

I noticed that the first Geelong player that the camera targeted after the game was Rowan.

Kolo had 3 terrible turnovers and was playing on motlop who kicked tge first 2 goals of the match, ended up with 3 and set up two others. Motlop even took a contested mark against kolo.
I have sadly come to expect his horrible turnovers. But getting out marked by Motlop in a 1v1 is something else.

Kolo had some good moments. Took a lot of marks. Just can’t be trusted to hit a target.

Motlop becoming dangerous, and a constant focus on Dixon completely took Stewart out of the game.

Meanwhile, Hartlett did his job perfectly.
Yeah stewart is off the boil abit this year just not his usual self it seems that collarbone seems to have unnerved him but I do expect he will rebound next year with full pre season...

We got beaten in basics so badly in the third quarter. How frustrating to see us consistently second to the ball. Credit to Port much better than us in big moments. The last quarter after Stanley goal we lose a crucial clearance straightaway and bang they score. The set ups in the Centre bounces were baffling considering what’s was on the line.

If you said Hawk would have 6 shots at goal and take at least 5 marks inside 50 you would have thought we win. Missed chances got in his head.

A lot of players struggled when game was on the line in third. Port worked harder and looked and were able to get ball out in space. We blew this as much as they won it. We looked slow particularly in back half because the middle dropped off. I feel our biggest issue is in the middle of the ground.

In some ways last night mirrored the PF in 2019. Failed to capitalize on our ascendancy then opposition took their chances and made us pay.

Well done, Cat_Mancini. First page I've looked at for this thread, and it pretty much sums up my thoughts entirely.

Goal kicking abysmal before half-time, intensity and effort atrocious from there until the last change. That's the game right there.

I thought the key factors on the night were:

Terrible conversion from us when we were on top in the first half.
Embarrassing capitulation around the ball in the third quarter.
Easy goals from centre clearances for them, which we simply never got.
Crazy match-ups in the middle when the game was still alive in the last (so crazy even Bruce commented on it in the call).
Mids were quite ordinary for most of the night, and Port set up their game by dominating clean and quick exits from there.

As Mancini said, if you'd said Hawk would have that many marks and that many shots (with Dixon having no marks and one shot), you would have thought we were a massive chance to win. As it was, our best player was a guy we delisted and then rookied after last year, and he had precious few teammates that could say they even performed to parity, let alone well.

To get embarrassed by a club that had so little finals experience compared to us (less than Selwood and Taylor combined) makes this truly one of the worst losses in finals since 2011. And that is truly saying something.

No matter how much experience at the level they get, we appear to have a whole host of players who are simply incapable of raising their game. While this is the case, winning more than one final in any year is clearly beyond them.

Just. So. Flat.

That was probably the worst game Kolodjashnij has played since being at Geelong. He totally crumbled under pressure, as did Jack Henry. Surprisingly even Stewart was flakey. On the other hand Henderson was really composed.

Worst game Kolo has played? That was just a stock standard final from him. We see the same every year but still persist.

Hawkins a perfect example of our mental frailty. Been snagging them from the pocket all year yet come finals he just f$&@s it up. 2 years in a row after getting suspended in the finals last year he has cost us dearly.

Culture is everything in a footy club and unfortunately ours has been firmly written on the back of repeated finals failures. The worst thing is CS will cash in our draft picks to bring in more ageing players or shit trucks, if he spent as much time on a plan B as he does on his hair we would be a shoe in :thumbsu:

Ahhh the next morning coffee & rant....
Here it is.
Beaten on the night by a better team when it really mattered.
Clearances were crucial and we fcuked it up at the wrong times.
We were a little too sloppy with the ball and inaccurate kicking killed us.
A couple usual suspects are just that. SUSPECT when finals comes around.
The true assessment of this team will come after next weeks game.
If they go out in straight sets THEN and only THEN the cuts must come and must be deep.
Until then we dust ourselves off and get back on the horse that we just got bucked off.
Read a few posts and the salt, the hurt, the anger and disappointment is there in abundance.
Well. Enough of that as the game is done and dusted. On to next week and here's hoping it's The Pies!!
Cheers boys & remember that... WE ARE GEELONG.

To be fair he got injured but he needs to come in and provide some run. As you say, we have a boring, one paced game that needs an injection of youth.
Pace means nothing when you dont get the footy, Clark needs to work on that before hes walking into an AFL side, 13 touches a game is nowhere near enough for the position he plays.

This is born out by Olly Wines interview: he basically said Ken was spewing on them at half time.
So he knew what we did, Geelong should have been in front and easily.
Silence that toxic crowd x 4 goals when we had our chances and game definitely takes on a different vibe

Also that late goal to give them back the lead on half time was crucial I think.
Selwoods goal could have given us some momentum going into the third but instead it was ripped away in those last 30 seconds.
It no doubt gave Port and the crowd a massive lift.

Thought Ablett was poor.
Yes he has an amazing track record.

The question posed implied that the track record was erased; a 10 possession, 3 tackle and 0 scoreboard impact performance from any small forward would warrant scrutiny.

edit: considering his career will come to a close in the next week or so there is no danger that his spot in the team is under threat.

without looking at stats he was probably no worse than Miers, Dahlhaus or Atkins

9 defenders in the team and a lack of pace, bringing in Atkins when Steven has had a better year and Close is a better pressure player. Esava for Stanley was the right call. Not making more changes to the team that struggled against ******* Sydney wasn't.
So Close and Steven would have made a big difference, right, ok......

Thought we were playing the best footy in the comp a month ago. Then we came up against Richmond and they were too good and we were ordinary. Then a week later we almost lost to Sydney. So we brought that form into a match against the top of the ladder on their home turf. They were quite good and we were ok. Again, couldn’t really go up a gear when needed. Don’t think we were as far off as some are saying but good teams don’t let a Motop kick 3 goals, and if he didn’t, we win. And the Coleman medallist can’t kick a goal. Expecting to beat WC ( assuming it’s them) next week, but then it’s Richmond and we’d have to improve to knock them off!

The worst part of the loss was that we had the right team selected... doesn’t leave too many options going forward.

Options (not that appealing):

Sav in for Kolo/Taylor
Clark in for Kolo/Taylor
Narkle/Close in for Atkins/Dalhaus/Miers

I was thinking this year we finally had some depth, players we could bring in and maintain the standard. Not so sure about that now.

Pace means nothing when you dont get the footy, Clark needs to work on that before hes walking into an AFL side, 13 touches a game is nowhere near enough for the position he plays.

His 13 touches would equate to far more metres gained than Kolo. It’s not just about quantity.

If you go small, then you must have the smalls at the fall of the ball. ?instead they get sucked to the contest and arent able to crumb it well.

And Rohan must have run 1000kms last night getting to packs and flying for marks. Not a single one taken and no one there to crumb it.

TRying to win the car with every pack mark does not help us.

Go Catters
1000km for zero marks is not a great use of energy. Perhaps he needs to reduce his kilometres run and consider short burst leads.
