Geelong for the flag in 2019?

Smith wasn't "over the hill" when you recruited him. He was just an average ruck who hasn't stepped up.
No, he's stepped down….never to play seniors for Geelong again

Yeh he was. He was injury-riddled and no longer getting a game for a mediocre side. We took a punt as it is what we like to do under this current admin and it has cost us.
We have tried to turn Stanley, a key position player, into a main ruckman and it's not working out. A failure on all fronts and something a lot of our supporters said when we recruited such players.
Brayden Preuss was available last summer, he may not become anything but we should have tried to work something out as he would be a certain upgrade over anything we currently have.

Chris Scott is a touchy coach ater losses. Batted away the suggestion that the week in Perth wasn't the best preparation as a 'cheap shot' comment.

Well a guy I work with who is pretty football savey called it and put money on it. I laughed at him at the time on Friday. His view was spending an entire week away interstate ends up being a distraction and takes the team out of its routine and basically by the the time the game comes up the players aren't as focused. Well he was right and is collecting his coin.

So if people like this can see it and full time football journalists ask a legitimate question why is Chriss Scott casually dismissing it as a 'cheap shot comment'?

Will they do that again next season?

Preuss' regression this year has been staggering. I don't know if it's because he hasn't been getting many games, or because he's sharing big man duties with Gawn, or if he's just been Melbourned, but he's certainly gone backwards. Very little impact on games. I do expect though he probably would have done better at Geelong as the top dog and in a better team. His decision to go to Melbourne was baffling.

Good friends with someone involved with the club who told me a few weeks ago that Geelong have been using the luxury of games clear to put their players through a “mini” pre season to amp up for finals. Great teams have done it before with good success.

I expect the Cats to be both barrels loaded and firing come week 1, but they wouldn’t want to slip outside the top 2.

FWIW I think it’ll West Coast and Richmond to grace the G on the last day of the season. Richmond are looking mighty fine, and WC are pumping at the right time of the year.

If they're really doing that, then I question the effectiveness and wisdom of that. Momentum is important, and if you keep in say a low gear it takes more energy to take it up a gear or two than if you're already there. Also would they really risk finishing 3rd or even 4th and potentially travelling to Perth or Brisbane? I just think Geelong are in a form slump. The Brisbane match will be huge.

Oh please- who isn’t happy to get away from Geelong for a week in winter. It’s not why we lost. Move on.

I was focusing more on the coach being a dick. Cheap shot comment!

Then on 360 last night Wheatley asked the exact same question and Scott replied "Thats a good question!".

Chris obviously had his knickers in a knot post game and took it out on the journos.

Not his finest coaching nor media performance.

Yep. Sometimes he says dopey things, sometimes he says intelligent stuff. Like the rest of us. Does it matter, really?

The arrogant prick will get his just deserts. Cannot wait.

I'll be an honest, not a fan of Chris Scott in the media or his press conferences. Talks a lot without saying much. Gets frustrated by fair questions.

However, when he questioned Richmond after our round 20 loss to them at the G, and was ultimately proven right, that still makes me laugh.
It bothered Richmond fans so much that he had the nerve to question their Premiership credentials. They went after him mercilessly, calling him a flog with no idea, a sore loser, a sook etc. etc.

6 weeks later, he was proven right. Scott still may be all those things Richmond fans said he was, but he was also unquestionably correct.

I can back this up 100%.... Live down here & have a couple of good friends at the club. The coaching staff/high performance team had a round table meeting at the bye & come up with a month of very hard training from roughly Round 15-19 leading into the Sydney trip. As of now they’re back to a quite regular regime.... Time will tell if it works but it has definitely happened.

The old 'heavy training load'. They were the absolute rage for a while there and I feel like they dropped off?

Seems good physically but maybe not mentally? Geelong looked unbeatable and had a bit of a strut going, now they may walk into finals feeling a bit iffy about how good they actually are.

They're just about the only team at the top who have their best players fit and healthy, they should really win it. Their pressure forwards like Rohan, Dahlhaus have lost form for the minute, and they were crucial to the way they were playing in the first half of the year. In 2019 their is nothing scary about a team who can't contest the ball in their front half.

Rohan is out for about 2 weeks.

Dahlhaus is coming back from an injury this week.

So the 2 crucial players you mentioned have been or are hurt.

Clark just got injured at training, Parfitt has been injured.

We're not super fit and healthy right now.

Not my point, you've got 3-4 injuries to players who are not in your top 10. Injuries aside, Dahl and Rohan have had big drops in output in the second half of the season. If we look at:

West Coast missing Nic Nat
Collingwood missing De Goey, Beams etc etc etc
Richmond missing Rance
Brisbane missing Zorko
GWS missing Coniglio, Ward, Kelly, etc

Most of the above players are unlikely to feature in finals. You're pretty much the only team in the top 8 who isn't missing their best player. A team in Geelong's position, with all their stars on the park should be able come up with a game plan that will take them to the grand final.

I reckon they have.... Actually really unsure if it will hurt or hinder our chances tbh. One thing for certain is that our two way running & transition play has been very average post bye. Could well have a lot to do with it....

For the past 7 seasons when we've got to the pointy end of the season, we've come in red hot and crashed on entry (to finals).

I'd hope that our form slump is the result of a change in preparation for finals from the club, otherwise god help us.

Seems strange that we would choose to flog our players when they are clearly showing signs of decline as is. I speak of the older player like Ablett, Taylor, Tuohy, Henderson, Selwood, Hawkins.
We have a very lop-sided team. Young and old and not much elite talent in between (except for Kelly) where you want your potential premiership team to be.
Ramping up their training load would only see the young guys capitulate.

I mean you have a look at West Coast's best 22 and their best players are middle aged and elite. Yeo, McGovern, Gaff, Darling. Maybe throw Ryan in their now.
