Nine reporting Tom Lynch already ruled out of the opening round and hoping to get back for the second week. Ruling him out more than a month before the match must put question marks over his availability for the first chunk of the year.

I hope he gets back to his best. Super player and probably the most important player on the Richmond side. But when he's missed every milestone in his recovery and Balta has spent his whole preseason up forward you've got to wonder if the recovery is still going worse than Richmond are saying.

It has been suggested Lynch is expected to be right for about round 3 if nothing goes wrong. You would think it would take him a while after that to get anywhere near his best. Richmond are a different team with him in it compared to him missing, 2022 v 2023 showed that pretty clearly.

Well he's on the track in boots (photo today), so he is moving forward. All summer Richmond have said he is going really well and on track for maybe rd.1, so it looks as through it is going pretty much to plan. He has been doing a lot of running and has just started basic footy work. I imagine running and jumping is the next stage of a slow build up. We plan two games 5 days apart, so he was never going to play both.

Not really, it just ends the media speculation and avoids the travel and a 5-day break to round 1. There's an article in the age today where he says his foot is completely healed so now just needs to get the km's in the legs. All signs are positive at this stage.

Did he?
Does there have to be a ranking?

Good on Martin for staying there. I don’t know why there are ranking points for getting paid a heap of money to play footy somewhere.

Ablett grew up with the most famous name in footy with more pressure than any f/s player in the history of the game: and lived up to it by managing to spearhead his club from an also ran to the winningest club of the century.

I’m pretty satisfied with what he’s given. Where that ranks in your eyes is pretty irrelevant to me.

3 flags to 2. One club player. He gave more to Richmond than GAJ did to the cats. It’s a well known fact. Cope.

He's in my team of the century and would be in most if not all people's. Of course I rate him very highly. I just don't elevate him head and shoulders above the many modern era champions, let alone of all time.

We have Falcon mocking anyone who would rate Carey, Lockett, Williams, either Ablett or Franklin (to name a few) that bit higher. Occasionally he pretends he's seen these players in their pomp, more often he admits he hasn't.

Matthews, and Matthews only, is the one player they accept could be of a slightly higher standing. That's the issue. Then when this mighty trio denigrate, downgrade or ridicule these other champions in a quest to throw Martin ahead there's backlash. Unlike Cleany I believe there is a working brain in that skull of yours that could figure out these basics.

No it’s very simple criteria. You need multiple flags to be eligible for GOAT contention as well as hold some significant records/or be widely considered the best player of that position. This is widely observed amongst all sport in the world.

Lethal and Carey pass the test they are legit candidates. The other players of the 20th century don’t.

In your crafted rules that start from the position "who is my favourite player and what lazy criteria can I dismiss others with?". This is a level of thinking below your average 10 year old. With the viewing experience of past champions to match.

Primarily people consider Martin a midfielder. People have Ablett Junior ahead by so much on that front it isn't funny. There have been many threads, polls and so on to prove this.

You're living in denial to pretend your warped view is shared by the majority. You have a few die hard Tigers fans and that's it.

Martin has great claims to being the best player to debut 2010 onwards. He has a tiny claim to stand with the best debuting 2000 onwards. He has a laughable claim to stand at the level of the greatest players of all time. THESE are the cold hard truths. Not the ones you spin off in lala land.

You referenced a 30% vote that shows he is considered which was a hypothetical scenario that doesn’t exist. Poor analysis.

How many norm smiths?? Weird question, how many Coleman medal awards would it take to be considered goat?? How many AA blazers to be considered GOAT?? It’s a stupid and simplistic way of looking at it.

You already did a ablett Vs Martin thread and the poll was incredibly embarrassing one way, I think this was about 3 into your banned accounts list.

It’s not debatable, nobody considers him in the discussion with Carey ablett/s matthews lockett.

You have gotten you pantries riled up about this topic to the point of about 5 banned accounts now, and you are still that determined to keep going.

Accept people’s opinions and move on. The general public don’t consider him at the table

But there is a number right how many NS’s 5, 10, 15? Because clearly the current record isn’t good enough for you. Or do you just not rate them whatsoever and disregard any amount?

Noidnadroj Martin got almost all of his votes in the back half of the year forward because his form greatly improved. Because he returned to his primary midfielder role (who could still drift or station up forward here and there). The same role he had basically his entire career. He is not and never has been a genuine forward or even a forward/mid. He's an attacking midfielder who can rotate forward and expose defenders. There's a difference. And that role is indeed one that is ripe for picking up votes, especially Brownlow votes.

You are a cat's fan.... So I can ask you this.....

Cats in 2007 won the flag. James Bartel won the Brownlow medal and played in the 2007 grand final win vs port.

Steve Johnson won the 2007 norm Smith medal.

Had Steve Johnson not won the 2007 Norm Smith medal, would Bartel won it instead?

If so how would Bartels 2007 compare to Dusty Martin's 2017 season?
I'd say the three standouts that day were Johnson, Chapman and Scarlett but all three undoubtedly benefited from a very even and deep midfield performance (excellent supply, good protection).

Ablett was "quiet" compared to usual with 19 touches but they were high quality and most ended in scores.

Bartel was very good with 28 classy touches and 2 goals but if for some reason his top 5 team mates played a little less good, Geelong win by 7 goals and Bartel gets a Norm Smith - would it automatically make his season better? Not really even though you'd then have the Brownlow, Norm Smith and premiership set. He was great in H&A and great in finals regardless.

And this doesn't even cover the elephant in the room in that most considered Ablett to have the stronger season than Bartel in 2007. But he didn't win every single award, so it's automatically downgraded? I'm not so sure about that. In reality Ablett's 2007-2014 performance levels were very similar and he was roughly in the best couple of players in the comp for the entire period. So I think that's a better marker for excellence than "record votes in a season" or something like that.

As in 2010 GAJ more goals and disposals than 2017 Martin

If you want a season like 2017 Martin look at Matthews in 1978.

4 goals 28 disposals in the GF to be best on ground.

Got stiffed by the umpires after his comments when he didn’t win the Brownlow for his 1977 which was the best year ever in my and many others people views.

Which is why judging solely by getting an award or not is silly. It doesn’t raise or lower a performance.
But it wasn't the "most awarded season ever"?! No record amount of votes. NO BROWNLOW. NO NORM SMITH. NO AYRES AWARD.

Give me Neale's or Walsh's 2023 over those seasons any day. Am I doing it right?

Also forgot to mention Dusty got the Gary Ayres medal as well in 2017. So it’s actually the quadruple (Brownlow, NS, Gary Ayres, Flag) that GAJ needed which he wasn’t close to in the end. Nobody has come close to it ever.
