I've noticed that Cripps constantly has opposition players fall into his back when he goes to ground with the ball, but he rarely gets a free for it.

Because he's not a 'superstar' yet. The current standing of players and teams subconsciously comes into play, I am certain of it. (although I may need a tinfoil hat)

For example, the general consensus is that Hawthorn is now on the slide. If you look at our JLT game against them, the umpires were actually paying a good amount of 50/50's against the Hawks. You'd have never seen that a few years ago when the Hawks were viewed as an all-conquering juggernaut.

Another example is Levi. He's no star, he's just a 'big lump of a lad who can't kick', therefore defenders are allowed to climb all over him. If he was Jack Riewoldt he'd be drowning in free kicks.

Robbo's biggest mistake is putting Dangerfield ahead of Martin. Dangerfield is stupidly overrated I just don't get it.

Dangerfield is the AFL's version of Alexis Sanchez

Because the baying public at the behest of a shithouse media don't want the sheer volume of free kicks this would generate.

You'd have front page of the Herald Sun with an article from a pundit who provides rent-a-quote asking 'Is this Netball?!!!', with the Cornes group from Adelaide weighing in on their two bob's worth, and the talkback discussing the change in the rules as detrimental, overinvolving the umpires; "We come to watch footballers play footy, not umpires umpire" etc, and so on, ditto for Perth and the parts of Sydney that care.

There's the problem, and why they've nearly eliminated the throw outside of the super obvious scoop or one handed effort. How do you police throwing in a climate where umpires are encouraged to let the game go?

Gethelred - not disputing your comments and you will not please everyone all the time.
However our game has basic disposal methods and throwing is not one of them. Free Kick. simple.
The rolling mauls is the main concern at present and that is not part of our game either.
I get back to my comments that if the player with the ball does not dispose of it by correct methods then it is a free kick to their opposition.
That has always been in our game until recent times.
Now we have so many different interpretations that the ump will never get it consistent throughout a game, which leaves everyone unhappy.

leaving that limp wristed drunk who wrote the article aside...

Joe Daniher is a fantastic footballer mate - in fact for Carlton right now - he would be a PERFECT get ahead of the other three you quote.

100% on the money.

Here's hoping McKay can bridge that gap over the next 3 years. Not sure he has the same intensity/desire that Daniher does (at least outwardly), but he's got plenty of time to find it.

That'd be the dream. Harry evolves/progresses towards what Daniher and plays out of FF (but super mobile and covers a lot of ground) while Charlie does his thing as an even more mobile CHF and Jack plays the smart/clever 3rd man in the spaces between/created.... all while Garlett, Lang, Fisher, Pickett, etc (& Polson & LeBois... for Soapy) run through the space and crumb at their feet. Plus the occasional cameo from Cripps, Kennedy, Dow, Samo, LOB, Weit, etc

Can you pass me the tissues...

The beauty of these planned editorials is Robbo actually gets a chance to proof read all of it when he's sober.

Pretty sure the season* would be over by then...

And ... might I add, QUITE within the realms of possibility!

Oh no, don't mistake me at all; I've been saying what you're saying for years. I wrote an article for The Roar, about half way through last year, saying that the simplest, cleanest way to clear the congestion is to pay more incorrect disposal frees, which would have a twofold effect, re-legitimizing the handball as well.

The problem is very much that people are told that the game is overumpired, over sanitized. They're told that frees are awarded, earnt, deserved, drawn; meaning that you've done something to obtain the free, when a free kick is compensation for the opposition breaking the rules not any kind of reward. We're told, by those older than we are, that the best era for footy was the 80's, and we contrast that with tales of players belting other blokes behind the ball, of the best players being the hardest, of breaking the rules and getting away with it. We hear about 'tiggy touchwood' free kicks, on talkback radio and social media; we hear of 'free kick of the week' every single week.

All of this adds up to an AFL message to the umpires not to over umpire, to only pay the obvious ones. It was either last year or the year before that we began the season with an average of 25 free kicks per match across the first 4 rounds, and everyone was happy with it, saying it was good that the umps put away the whistle and let them play.

Put very simply, the AFL won't do it, because the perception is that while the players throw and drop the ball without repercussion - unless it's good theatre, ala a Cyril/Puopolo tackle - it's better than a 60-80 frees a match situation.

And that, right there is the issue. I think this bloke could be a (Luke Livingston sized) bust. I've heard more than once that he has a healthy opinion of himself, he has not earned it yet - and to boot has Fevolaesque body language on the ground.

Tell us how Danger is over-rated?
He takes selfish options half the time
He butchers the ball half the time
He does flashy shit and people forget the shit kick he turned over few seconds earlier

Martin is a better footballer in every way except acceleration.
