As much as I hate 'em, and I really hate 'em, I'm forced to admit that this isn't the worst team I've seen at AFL level...

FB: Gwilt - Hartley - Baguley
HB: Polkinghorne - Brown - Kelly
RK: Leuenberger - Goddard - Crowley
CR: Zaharakis - Z.Merrett - Simpkin
HF: Cooney - Daniher - Laverde
FF: Stokes - McKernan - Jamar
IC: Dea J.Merrett Fantasia Parish

And that's not including rumoured Top Ups Sam Grimley, Matt Watson or George Burbury.

It'd give Carlscum a run for their money.

Don't forget Craig Bird

For the tech inclined, last year's prospectus - afl prospectus 2015 by Champion data is now free on the afl App Store for tablets for a short time.

EDIT: forgot Craig Bird. Thanks Joffaboy :thumbsu:

Hartley and Brown were good pickups for Essendon under the circumstances. But it would be amazing if just one of them managed to be good enough to handle the big talls every week.
Which means Gwilt is likely to be punching above his weight a fair bit of the time. ( Saints supporters know how that goes ).
Gwilt , Polkinghorne , Baguley and Kelly will be working very hard indeed. Not sure that they have enough ability to do it.

Leuenberger MAY make it through the season. Not much depth there if he doesn't.

I've never considered Goddard to be a player to "carry" a struggling side. Sometimes he can get 15 contested possessions , sometimes 2.
Crowly -meh tagger.
Zaharakis , last year was not as useful as ( for example ) Jack Newnes.
Laverde - no matter his long term prospects, he's young and green and i wouldn't expect too much. Ditto Parish.

McKernan. This is from Essendon's web site.
" Shaun McKernan was a revelation for the team this year. Taken in the rookie draft, McKernan was initially recruited as a ruck but demonstrated early his potential to also move forward and kick goals. "
OK so by "revelation" and "early" he'd played 6 games by round 17 and managed to kick A goal. But they did use the word potential, so its not a lie. Any player who gets a game has that potential. And he did manage to boot 3 against the Suns.

Potential. That's what every club wants from a player it picks up who's 24 years old, played 34 games at what, two other clubs? Yep, what you want is for them to show potential... amidst also being ranked THE #1 worst player in the entire competition for clangers. Yep, potential.
