It's pretty simple. This years draft is supposedly shallow and we probably felt there's better value in having an extra pick next year for a F/S that potentially looks better than pick X this year.

Oh Brother......

So explain to me really clearly how the Lang trade satisfies that stated objective. Do it with a straight face. Also before you respond look up how many draft points that picks in the 60's are worth.

Why don't you ask Wells, seeing you understand it better than he...and jump in an ice bath afterwards.

The main thing we had to achieve this year was to not have too much damage to next years draft.

To get Gaz for what we did and to really not do much damage to our 2018 draft picks

Well done:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

IMO if you look at the net result it's about breakeven.
I look at it this way :
Motlop compo a big win.
Ablett probably paid marginally overs.
Lang disappointing but he was out of contract and more than likely would of walked into the PSD. And personally I don't rate Lang as highly as others do here.
Richmond draft swap a win-win for both clubs.
We go into this years draft with 22, 24, 35 & 58.

In 2018 we have 1x1st rd, 2x3 rd, 2x4th rd.
We are clearly looking at banking points for next years draft and the father/son pick ups that could come our way. Our list management would be well aware of their potential value and would believe they can snare them with the above picks.
It is a gamble in terms of relying on Carlton & GC to have ordinary years to maximize those 4th rd picks in terms of draft points but one worth taking IMO.
On top of that we probably have salary cap room to make a play for a decent FA.

The sky hasn't fallen in.

Well, for the past few years I have been saying I didn't want Jr back. I was unimpressed with him leaving in the first place and didn't buy all the 'but the money' crap. He would have made plenty had he stayed. I think he is a bit of a sook. Having said that...
I hope he stays fit and is able to give his best. I look forward to next season with great interest. I just hope we don't have one of those team of champions but not a champion team scenarios. If "they" can put the pieces of the puzzle together we could be in for a great ride. Bring on 2018.
Agree with you about the 'money' crap. But he'll make more money returning to Geelong, not that I believe he's in it for the $$$.

I think the way Selwood + Dangerfield have bonded, the genuine, mutual respect + both are all about the team, it can be a situation where Ablett can simply zhoosh into the team + with everyone working to make the team cohesive, I think it's going to be great!

Not sure if people remember, but Ablett is adored by the players, especially the older players + imagine kittens like Cockatoo, Zuthrie, Kolo, Buzza etc playing in a team with three of the all time AFL greats - Selwood, Dangerfield + Ablett? *swoon*

There is a terrific opportunity to rotate Ablett + Menzel, meaning one can rest or be managed + the other play. I'm really excited!

Say we pick Player X at 15. We keep them.

Then roughly someone bids on Brownless at 20. That is 912 points but you get a 20% discount so we need to find 730 points (912 x 80%).

Using similar finishing positions to last year and trades just completed, our picks would be VERY ROUGHLY then 15, 51, 55, 57, 59, 69 (VERY roughly).

We would then have to give up pick 51 (259 points), pick 55 (207 points), pick 57 (182 points) and to get the last 82 points selection 59 (158 points) would slide out to pick 67 (76 points).

I think practically we would need 5 list changes though to use picks 15, 51, 55, 57 and 59 and their points. We would then select Player X at 15, Brownless at 20, pick 67, two picks at end of draft.
OK so theres a chance that we might only be able to secure one F/S in our current position if i read this correctly (of course assuming that Brownless gets bid on that early)

For all the toing and frowing that's gone down, it's days like today that make me love the Hoops.

We bring the romance to the game, the gamble, the loftier ideals.

We try and put people first and hope it will work out OK.

We go with the heart and well as the head.

Simply put - we play the way the game should be played.

Welcome home Gary - a sweet moment in a very rough week for you.

I liked Smedts as a junior but he never developed. Lacked self discipline. Was also played out of position - was a forward, not a back man.

Brown was a Wells reach that didn't come off. Been a few now..

I know what you say is correct ... but both players lost ground and momentum due to injury. I liked Smedts and said so pre draft.. and plenty of pro eyes said he was good. I do feel he fell a little bit to the changing pressure of the game to be a good kick .. Brown certainly was a reach but those early injuries just kill kids..because clubs make make other choices and eventually move past them. Much the same I guess if players take too long to develop.

Have a look at our early pick since 2007 ... we have not had a lot of luck with our picks.. if they stay fit and fail at least one could say it was a pure fail.

If anyone now understands that money can't buy everything it would be Jr. I never booed him. More like a stoney silence. ;) He's a Cat now and has my support. It is rather exciting. If it doesn't work out, so be it.

Kitty got Gary back

Oh I wish Boxhead ;) but I just knew it, at that moment, right into the marrow of my bones that he'd return. You should have seen + felt the relief in him, when I threw myself at him  But seriously, he was petrified coming down those steps of that bus + the way he clung to me, I could feel him relax, his relief was palpable + he thanked me.

How great was it when he kicked that goal from the Ablett pocket + the whole of KP erupted in applause? :hearts::hearts::hearts:

Magnificent post!

What a moving message.

OK guys, indulge me please?

I was the first person to greet Gary when he stepped off the GCS bus at KP for the first time. He looked petrified as he was coming down the steps, so I threw my arms around him, saying how wonderful it was to have him back at KP, that I hoped he was happy at GCS + would enjoy great success. Gary was so relieved he hugged me back, gave me a kiss + held me, thanking me. Then I said, I knew he'd return to Geelong to play in the Hoops again.

This is the day!!!
