Talking about ruckman, thoughts on Phillips at Carlton? Seems to have good goal sense and knows how to tap to advantage. Playing his first game for the year.

We will get 2 years out of Kelly to at least 2019, its not a waste of a pick considering we thought we were in the window.

We will get at least the pick we used back, or better IMO. We may even good a young gun and a pick upgrade back.

I don't think selecting Kelly was a waste, trading players with currency is not that bad, we will get something good back.

If he is going home it will be end of this year when he has trade value, we wont get anything for him when his contract is up.

I actually held out some hope Kelly may stay. Until I read that article with his manager's comments anyway. 100% gone, let's try and get the best deal we can at the end of the year, I can't see us contending next year, just cut him loose at the end of this year.

Absolutely. But watch us try to top up again with Murphy and god knows who else. Bring the kids in and hit the draft, it's a proven method of winning flags.

Shouldn’t be topping up anymore, this group isn’t premiership material, the more young guys we get in and more game time they get the better we will be for when our stars retire.

Couldn't agree more. But do you think we will? Personally, I have no doubt we will keep topping up under Scotty. He and the club are committed to this path, and I don't think he can keep his job if we go down the rebuild path. He's going to start feeling the pressure soon, I get the feeling he will want to keep topping up to keep us competitive so he doesn't lose his job..

No I don’t, mainly because while we have Selwood, Danger, Hawkins and Ablett playing great footy along with guys like Henderson, Touhy, scooter, Duncan who want success.

Club has to accept that we’ve tried topping up and it only got us so far, 2013 PF, 2014 straight sets, 2016 PF, 2017 PF, and unless we hit some form 2018 may be miss finals.

Yep, lets hope they realise it's time to load up the next couple of drafts, like we did last year.

How would everyone feel if AFL was like the NRL? Where players are upfront with there current club and told them they want to move and go to another club while there under contract with there current club?

MC did you read my post in the post game thread... I dont think we are that far off.. its not like we have been doing a Lyon old guy thing. 6 debutants this year.. etc..

The proven method of drafting kids is not as clear cut as that.. compared to our build last time its unlikely to replicate.. unless we add early picks and a few FSons in key areas.

The issue we have our list now ..I feel is our R1 picks for the last decade just have not worked out.. a lot of that is not having enough picks early enough in the draft. No single figure picks since Selwood... and Cockatoo is keeping the trend going .. as our earliest pick for 12 years..he is looking like our biggest flop since Tenace...unless he can find a way to get and stay fit.

So bring kids in ...ok yes. I agree but we dont just need kids we need 2-4 high end kids (single figure draft picks) and then I think we would be close to having our list in avery sustainable position... The trick..how do we get those picks.

Yeah valid points Turbo. Those high picks are very hard to come by, particularly as we never bottom out. I still think we can get some really good players with picks in the teens, 20's and even 30's. This is where Wells has had a lot of success in the past. We have certainly started to blood more kids which is really positive, but I don't want to see us trading anymore first round picks unless it's for a young star, or getting old free agents (Murphy). As you say, we have butchered some 1st round picks in recent years, and as a result we're feeling the effects now.

We nailed he draft last year, we’ve got some good young guys to work with but the more the better.

Loved Narkles game last night.

Yeah exactly. We just need to do what we did in last years draft for the next couple of years. Wells will find some players with picks in the 20's, 30's and even 40's, it's what he does.

I think with those picks in 20, 30, 40s - it can be more obvious who the remaining talents yet to be selected are too...

After our first round pick we don't have anything until we get a cluster of four picks in that 50-60 range. Regardless of father-son bidding and what not I'd like to see us get a few picks in that 20-40 range. As the last two posters have pointed out, we seem to have a great strike rate in the middle portion of the draft, it's where Wells does his best work.

Richmond won the deal straight away but i reckon Parfitt will be a really good player in the future, a better player than Caddy.

Yeah, and a lot of people thought Caddy would turn out to be a good player for Geelong. You measure trades on what's quantifiable and real.

Also we didn't get parfitt for caddy. We got pick 26, which we ended up using to pick parfitt. There's a lot more risk with a draft pick, you might not get who you want, they might not develop as you had hoped.. While I think in time parfitt will be a better player, Richmond definitely won that trade for mine.
