I'm happy with that as long as we don't overpay for Steven.
Saints mate who claims to be close to the action reckons StKilda just want to off load Steven to free up salary. I was thinking a 3rd rounder. Could be a Steven King scenario

From listening to Wells it will be for a later pick. Saints need to make cap room for the players they want to bring in.

Is there smoke here?. I was at a lunch last week where Clarkson volunteered him up as someone they’d love to get a hold of.

No smoke at all.

I was just trawling through some old draft stuff, looking for quick blokes with repeat sprinting ability and willing tacklers. Cockatoo fit the bill and always loved the way he plays. If Clarko is chasing him he's a smart man as he's exactly what we need.

I think he was already on.

Steven will be a Cat. No Jenkins. Constable isn’t being traded.
Fat Jack is a disappointing target imo.
He'll get games on reputation at the Cats, and we know the MC love to play guys out of position just to squeeze them in because.

He's not in great condition, and I expect he'll be like a little version of Jesse Hogan. Rock up to pre season the size of a whale, have to work twice as hard just to drop skin folds, then get injured and miss huge slabs of playing and training.

I'd rather we put more time into Narkle, Parfitt, Miers, Constable etc through the middle than waste time with this plonker, no matter how cheap he comes.

It's exactly what we need as well.

These guys are elite athletes the club and Steven will know what he has to do, it may mean he wont be ready for round 1, weight will be the least of the issues to be fair to him...

Thought Wells was very forthcoming. The take home messages for me were:

Kelly: Although the club hasn't been officially told of Tim's intentions, TK's manager -and Tim - had told us all long "we should prepare as if he is requesting a trade" Gone!

Scott Selwood: Wants to coach.

Constable: As I've said all along, he was never going anywhere "We had a good conversation with Charlie the other day. We want Charlie to stay. He wants to stay, so he's staying"

Buzza: "We spoke to him the other day and we said there is still a chance he will end up on our list, or that we'll be able to offer him a contract. It will be up to him then if he wanted to stay or not"

Steven: I think he wants to come to Geelong...........it will depend on what sort of deal has to be done there and it will also depend on negotiations with his manager for the contract. ....The way it's headed there's a good chance Jack will be at Geelong"

Ablett: He has a contract on the table and it's up to Gary. Won't be surprised either way.

Jenkins: Right now we won't be doing anything with Josh. HALLELUJAH!

What did Wells say re the Kelly trade?

Here is a summary from Herald Sun:

I bolded certain parts as it dove tails with what Tom Morris said last night on on the couch. TM said that West Coast Eagles believe that TK has informed GFC of his intention to request a trade to WCE last week (which may be different than formally requesting a trade).

Geelong list boss Stephen Wells says the club is still yet to receive a formal trade request from star midfielder Tim Kelly.
After two brilliant years at the Cats, Kelly is out of contract and has been widely tipped to return home to Perth.
West Coast is seen as being in the box seat to land him.
However, despite Geelong’s season ending more than two weeks ago, the club is yet to get a final answer from Kelly on his next move.
“We haven’t been officially told anything about Tim requesting a trade. All the conversations we’ve had over the course of the year with Anthony van der Wielen (Kelly’s manager) and Tim have suggested that we should prepare as if he is going to be requesting a trade. But right now, nothing official has happened.”
Kelly enjoyed a brilliant 2019 season, polling 24 Brownlow votes to finish fifth.
While the Cats are hoping Kelly stays, Wells said the club had engaged in some minor talks with both Perth based rivals in an early attempt to see what potential deals could look like.
“All the conversations with both clubs have been good,” Wells said.
"I get on well with people at both clubs. It’s not just me either. We’ve got a list management group. There hasn’t been much to talk about so far. If it does turn out that Tim requests a trade, and we hope that doesn’t happen, but if it does, all we’re looking for is a good and fair deal.”

GAJ offered a 1 year deal, now just up to Gary.
Kelly still no notification, but they will try and get the best deal whether it's Freo or WCE, in theory.

I'm in agreement, and I acknowledge his mental health is an issue, not just his folds. It still remains that dropping the kgs and getting base fitness of a preseason is both physically and mentally draining, I'm not convinced he can do both successfully. Happy to eat my words if he does.

To be fair, it's more of an issue that I suspect the MC will select a 60% fit Steven over a younger player in the same position a) because he's Jack Steven, b) because he's Jack Steven and we traded for him.

The club has shown a willingness to wallpaper instead of build over the last few years with OK players from other teams. Rohan, Dal, Thouy, Henderson, Smith, McIntosh, (even a cooked GAJ at the back end of season) etc while some of the kids get left to play in the Magoos. Some kids have been played this year, which is good, but it still feels like we'd be 'patching up' the team.

I'd rather we let go of the fear of failing by playing kids, than continue down the mediocre path with top ups.

Just my 2 cents.

Looking in detail at the potential draftees I would be more than happy with any of about 15 guys. If we could get 2 picks underneath our current 1st rounder I think he can have a good draft and replicate what Port Adelaide did last year with Rozee, Duursma and Butters.
