Geelong's Zac Smith and Lion Archie Smith could yet feature in a club swap.

Been stuck behind Martin for years, hasn’t worked when they’ve tried them together, played just 9 games in 4 years of those only 2 were rucking solo without Martin.
He's a big boy and only 24. Would do in an instant.

Isnt that what we said about zac smith when we drafted him only that zac smith had much more success.
We've got to hit gold eventually with recycled rucks, so many other clubs seem to get lucky when they bring across mature big blokes from other clubs. Witts, Jacobs, Martin, McEvoy, Nankervis off the top of my head. About time we get some good fortune on that front. If we can manage a straight swap for Z. Smith or Abbot somehow I'd roll the dice.

You never know but I agree I wouldn’t count on it

At the most ..we would get 1 ..and they would add an early R2 . 6 is so early that the R2 would do imo...say P22 ..but at a pinch perhaps they thrown in a kid.. pretty hard to knock it back its a better deal than danger cost .. 6 , 22 and North for eg.

It wasnt much. Only 4 games that were only ok and nothing more. Certainly not enough to justfy a multi year contract.

If we liked him at the time, thought he had good potential & other clubs were sniffing around I think the decision was reasonable not like his contact is a back breaker.

Archie Smith. THe only thing he has on Z Smith is age. Aside from that, I am not sure he is any good.
Nonetheless, here is his stats in NEAFL. He improved his average disposals in 2019, but his average HOs dropped.
I'm not sure on him, haven't watched him enough to conclude, but I don't think its anything to write home about.

Archie needs a very good ruck coach... it looks a classic case of another athlete rather than a natural footy player - the type we tend to go for

Why would Fort go? They usually sign 2 year deals when from national draft.

That’s the standard contract for a draftee.

If he was to come here I’d be intrigued to see what the club would do with, it seems like he has to be a no1 ruck & wouldn’t suit playing with Stanley, similar age & situation to O’Brien at the crows just O’Brien got his chance this year and took it with both hands, contracted till 2021 though so we’d have to take that on.

What I find interesting and something that is rarely mentioned is the likely misinformation spread by recruiters to other teams. They find out things about draftees that no other club knows. Things that would potentially make them unattractive for a club to pick. They don’t highlight. In fact, they give them extra attention about the positives. Suddenly clubs are thinking “oh wow, Geelong is paying attention to Player X. Maybe we should draft him first.”.

Meanwhile, player Q slips through to our pick.

Happens to us too (Smedts, Lang).
Obviously the opposite is done too- hiding the gems so that no one even sees you pick them until you do on the night - Kelly and Clarke being ones.

And then there are the games that potential draftees play - Grundy and Darling - to get themselves to their preferred clubs. Who knows, maybe Selwood did it too to get to the Cats.

Having just watched some clips of him, he was a late starter. Only kicked a footy for the first time as an 18yo. He is now 24yo.

So he's been on the Lions list since 2014, debuted in 2016, but has only played 11 AFL games to 2019.

Can see his NEAFL stats for the last 2 years (2018 and 2019) - with 2019 increasing his disposals.

Managed to track down his 2017 NEAFL season summary, where he was in the Best in 50% of his games that year.

He looks exciting to watch with his leap and size, but who knows, he has age on his side that's for sure. Probably make or break the next 2 years, might be worth the punt if we are trying to improve the age profile of our ruck stocks.

Each to there own opinion but I would rather Stanley then Nank or Solo...
For me, Soldo (at under 20 games with no AFL background and coming in as a rookie) even being spoken about in comparison to Stanley means that he’s better. Soldo has performed his role without fail.

Stanley... who knows. He played so poorly that he was dropped to the VFL for 2 weeks.

What a mess we have made of our ruck situation. We got all types in and could only improve Stanley, yet when it came to the game that decided this years premiership the match committee (as usual), dropped Stanley. While I’m at it, I’m worried about the picks we get for Kelly. In 2017 (VERY RECENT), we picked Fogarty and Constable before James Worpol, WHO WAS RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSES HIS WHOLE JUNIOR CAREER. He is a Hawthorn B&F winner at age 20. We do perform above and beyond at the draft but I just don’t think our football department is at the level of the top clubs eg injury management - does anyone reading this seriously think Lincoln McCarthy would have played 24 games this year for the Cats if was still here ? We are still in a good position but we need a very big lift in th off field department in the next month for trade and draft, then in development and medical.

Yes for Linc at Geelong. He got himself injury free due to timing, nothing else. Don't kid yourself about the injury management situation when you know nothing about it.
We picked up Kelly when for years, WA teams didn't. It seems we are good at spotting talent- Clark another example.

They've got to back Stanley in for the whole season and if that means only having young rucks as backup and getting rid of Smith, Abbott and Fort then so be it.

Stanley/Sav ruck combo could be pretty sexy but they've gotta play Krueger with Hawkins as well; dangerous tall setup we could have on our hands:thumbsu:

Fort and Abbott are both contracted and i doubt we trade both, probably one or the other.

The Worpel selection was a big stuff up. Right there with Thurlow over Grundy.
I'd say those two decisions were probably the biggest ones we missed.
But having said that, we have done very well with others like Stewart, Miers, O'Connor, Henry, TK, Clark in recent years.
I guess you can't win them all, but try win as many as possible.

saints need to move stevens on, he is on 700+
but they need picks for their bulls**t

so we need to get smart and extract another player who we value out of the saints along with stevens for a pick in the 20s

Like who?

Its not a bad idea.. the obvious player they would love to palm off is Newnes .. If we offered him a deal..creates a comp pick ..they would give us JS for nothing and keep his wage (probably)... Bytel is the one id ask about.
