We really need to shore up this draft so those who have been in the system and may have played some games are sort of ready to go when there's a lot of retirements at then end of 2022.

It's just unfortunate that the contracts/retirements were not a bit more staggered.

Yes & No.
In a way we could look back at it as a blessing.
Reduction in cap & list sizes is likely to be review next year and beyond.
We could find ourselves with list spots & cap space in a market the suits movement.
Could be a huge opportunity to look at S Walsh, TDK, T Bruhn, O Henry etc with big offers.

We have 4 picks inside 35 as it stands and Sheehy, Twomey and Knightmare all talk about the evenness of this draft between 15 - 30.

Hawks trying to move players on this year but finding it super difficult.
We retain our old blokes this year then have heaps of room to move in any direction next year when the landscape shifts again.

As much as I'd like 19, I can take 22 + F3 - Clark is good and has that upside but he just has not shown enough defensively (running back etc.) and lacks polish still. Can still get better but I'm not crushed he could leave.

I knew once the Hill news came out that Essendon would sniff around so hopefully means Stengle chooses us, is the kind of small forward we need and have lacked if he can get his game going like we have seen in glimpses so far.

Be interesting what we do draft wise too - trade up? or just go in with 22, 30, 32, 34 (or whatever 30's it is)? Don't really know how good the prospects around those picks are so a part of me wants to use 2 for a first rounder and then keep the other two.

Also, just out of curiosity - when does the DFA period start?? - some articles have alluded to it being opened on Friday but another article with dates said mid November so if anyone knows that'd be great

Best option is to keep Clark. Second best is 19 due to the added value on night two of the draft.

Clark is going to be a good player. 22 (24) could be another Lang/smedts/brown etc.

I think it’s a loss until the player we draft is a proven good player. It’s speculative.

I understand this sentiment and do feel like clark will be a good player.
But it's two years running now that he has had an ordinary year, looked like he wasn't happy and has been exploring a trade home.
If 22 gets us brown or knevitt, I think we give ourselves a very good chance at winning out in the end.
I worry we won't get the best from Clark now and 22 (hopefully a f3 too) is our best chance of getting a positive result down the track.

Would love 19 though.

DFA's are open I believe. ***please correct me if wrong
I think clubs like to wait until the end of the trade period before working out how many live picks they want to take to a draft.
DFA's often get selected before the draft to avoid them nominating, OR get asked to wait until after the draft if they want the option of an extra live selection at the end of the draft.

Yeah that makes sense, cheers.

Kind of wish we just signed up Stengle now or confirmed he would be coming to the club but yeah looks like we might be waiting a month or so

I think with Stengle he just needs to choose us or Essendon.
Doubt it would get announced prior to the end of trade period, however, it would affect what we want to do with our picks. For that reason, I think the cats would want to know this week. I want stengle to come across, so like you - here's hoping we find out soon!

I haven't been on here for a while - any prospects in that 20-40 range that seem exciting or promising? Would love to learn some names pre-draft so I can overhype them in my mind before being initially disappointed when we select a smokey

Tom Browne saying that 22 (#24) + Carl F3 for Clark is looking likely on the news.

I don’t hate the idea of extra picks next year when we can really clean house. I’d love to get a hold of Ess F1 next year. I reckon they could easily overestimate where they are
While I don't want Clark gone, it's probably the best of a bad situation

Please no...

Would love to hear your thought on what Hill would be worth?
I think there have been a lot of media linking it as if it would be a three way trade... however, the giants do need to move out someone if they are to bring lobb in. So if, the cats were to come and offer one of 30, or 34 for hill to facilitate this. Then assuming the clark deal still goes through for 22 (+ or - CarF3) or 19.

I think my point is that it wouldn't need to be straight swaps and be a clean three way trade.
For example: giants trade f2 to freo for lobb. cats trade pick 30 for ian hill. cats trade clark for 22 (+).
Interested for your view if it looked like that.

FR3 from carlton might be a pick in the mid to late 40’s. Is that really much of a sweetener?

I think this something strongly in our favour too.

Say the Dogs don't want to delist any to make list spots available for selections they'll hold for points value. We can hold those spots open at the draft knowing that we're taking Schlensog and or Stengle afterwards and we can live trade them for 23 on the night when the bid happens. Advantage to both parties

Nothing can be announced until the DFA period starts.

Anyone know when that happens?

We need miers playing up the ground as a link player with his endurance..whereas stengle is more a crumbing goalkicking small at hawkins feet. To me they play different roles and theres room for both in the 22.

Miers is a poor field kick which isn’t ideal as a link player.

What’s wrong with it Foxy
Rite no as we speak, if we get pick 22 from Freo, that's currently our best pick, so instead of using it for a forward pocket or flank on Hill, let's use it on the best midfielder we can get...
Not rocket science

I think it still works because he's just off the contest and is only giving it off a short distance. His field kicking isn't atrocious either

I respectfully disagree. A link player should be a good, long, penetrating kick. Miers is none of those things. Halts momentum every time he gets it.
