A champion like Sel deserves to get both the 350 and captaincy record and also the chance to evolve his game from pure mid to a different position and see if it can work.

And thats the type of thinking that has ruined the club, if a guy is cooked he is cooked, it doesnt matter what milestones they have coming up, you pick the best available players.

Nobody gets the chance purely to play on for a milestone. Not Selwood, nobody.

He was tried on the wing in 2019 and struggled.

He can’t play any other positions

He could play the Dahlhaus role of jumping on people already on the ground and locking the ball in….

I agree Selwood is a problem, there is an almost cultish belief in his abilities at Geelong but he is much diminished player.

I would take away the captaincy and aim for 12-15 games as a midfielder. Don’t think he can play back or forward now.

60% game time, I have seen them do that with Narkle and Constable so it is possible.

The club isn't ruined. Selwood held his own in 2021, and if he can do that in 2022 he deserves to be considered. I don't think he clogged the list at all in 2021

People were saying getting rid of Chappie, SJ, and others before they were finished ruined the club

He can barely run in the middle he would also be exposed in the forwards espically with his kicking these days

when a player is cooked he’s cooked

He became a gun lockdown defender, he was a questionable forward, but rewatch the 2011 GF where Cloke looks like he might bust the game open, had 3 goals upto the half way point of the 6 and then Lonners goes onto him and completely shuts him out. Heaps of other times where he shut down Buddy or Roughy as well, he rarely got beaten.
I'd be mighty pissed off if I were Lonergan, being compared to a plodder like Kolo..

Jesus, people have short memories here.

With a real ruck we'd probably have at least one if not two more flags right now. Ruck has been a priority for a decade and if a half decent one in the right age bracket is available we should make it happen. You can get midfielders too, it's not one or the other.

Nothing to do with short memories, more the evolution of the list. 5 years ago I would have agreed with you - we had a capable (and younger, quicker) midfield then and a better ruckman would have complimented that perfectly. In fact, you'll find at the time I was quite vocal about chasing a 'banger' type ruckman, to use Paul Roos' parlance (Darcy & Pruess were the two I suggested). Back then we were running with Zac Smith as our main ruckman with Stanley as backup with far less ruck experience than he has now.

Stanley and Blicavs have improved in the ruck plenty since then and I just don't think it's a huge issue anymore - at least much less of an issue than the midfielders. Sure they get beaten in there at times (Hickey, Darcy & Gawn the obvious examples in 2021 - 3 of the best performed this year), but name me a ruckman that doesn't. Ok, I'll give you Gawn.

And don't strawman me - I never said it needed to be one or the other. I said midfielders should be a higher priority right now than another ruckman, and you've done nothing to convince me otherwise.

He played a few good games but come on now take off the rose colored glasses, he was spanked in the finals and is cooked.

Still think he's a lot better than he's given credit for.

Gets found out for pace by small forwards. Too short to shut down a KPF. Too slow to play up the ground. Too clumsy and slow with ball in hand to turn defence into attack… would love to hear what he does well that makes him better than he’s giving credit for. If we have any chance he isn’t in our best 22 come round 1 2022.

Agreed.

He's been an awesome warrior for the club, and I have nothing but admiration for the courage he's displayed, but I also believe he's now part of the needed change.
Yep, there are three players I want going through the inside next year (Chook, Narkle, Stephens) and the obvious ones to lose inside midfield time are Menegola, Danger and Selwood.

If Voss takes Lappin with him, then its pretty much a clean sweep. I guess they are grappling with do they make a 5 year commitment to rebuild with Chris Scott (perhaps why they have offered Lappin a 5 year deal to run development), or they make it a clean change all round. Looking like its Scott with a new team for next 5 years. Given the sticking with the wrong game plan has been longer than 5 years, you hope the reportedly tougher Hocking us asking the hard questions upfront around game plan etc prior to ticking off a 5 year deal with Chris Scott. If you are unclear in any way Chris, we are done with your plan and we dont believe you when you try to ''manage'' us, so thats your base point.
Or... I can only hope lol.. we are starting whole new coaching panel, with also Chris Scott going lol

now we’re questioning Selwood‘s kicking? Really? If I had to have someone kick for my life, either at goal or around the ground in a contest it’s him.

I reckon if Danger can get a full, uninterrupted pre-season under his belt he should still play predominately in the guts.

Agree with the other two though, especially and sadly Selwood. He looked so cooked by the end of the year - you could see he was still giving 100% at every contest, but his body just wasn't up to it.

Did you watch the prelim? Its obvious how top rucks destroy us. We have needed a ruck for 10 years and we need it now more than ever.

No disputes there, but he's made some glaring errors at crucial moments that you can't get back
The reason behind that IMO is that he is limited at AFL level. It’s not a temperament thing, it’s just that he isn’t clean with the footy and that is shown up under finals pressure.

Menegola, Blitz, Henry till this year, Bews all have that issue to varying degrees.
