Forgive me if this is something well known - I didn't hear the Andrew Mackie interview, but based on what was written, it comes across as though we were interested in Jack Bowes before the notion of pick 7 coming with it was raised.

Is this correct?

If you believe hes being honest yet sounds like we have been chasing him for at least 12 months whereas bruhn only came up after that and henry about 2 weeks ago (probably when hopper chose richmond).

I dont doubt that but they are in the same boat as us-lots of trades to deal with so i doubt either club moves forward with mckenna until after the trade period.
It is plausible that they and McKenna have agreed and we haven’t had discussions for a while because of that.

I think Mack might have been talking in half truths about Henry.

Yes, he might have only come to a concrete decision 2 weeks ago, but him not signing a new contract was conspicuous all season and we were clearly the most obvious choice if he was going to leave Collingwood. I find it difficult to believe that we weren’t at least monitoring Ollie’s situation for at least a year.

I suspect Mack is publicly playing a straight bat re: Ollie because it does neither us or Ollie no good to say “yeah, we have been into him since the day he was drafted”.

Savs gone by the way Mackie spoke today, possibly to GWS as part of Bruhn deal?
Didn't see it that way myself but who knows?

Trade period is as much about calling people's bluff as anything else. I just think Mackie is leaving it for people to read into the Sav matter as they see fit. I think he's a required player, but the way I'm reading it is that if someone else steps forward and offers something juicy then Geelong will consider.

If Geelong put him on the market to the highest bidder then they're flagging that he's surplus to our needs and we lose all bargaining power. These decisions are collective one's and don't just sit with one person at the club. Chris Scott is part of that group and if he wants Sav to stay then I suspect it's going to take a big change of heart from the club to let him walk.

Yeah we would have been monitoring all year and aware he hadnt signed because of our family connection but i honestly think we expected to get hopper and didnt expect we had the picks to do henry. Henrys manager would have been telling him not to nominate geelong until he is sure we can get it done. Then hopper who was coming to us is swayed by a 7 year offer from richmond (which we were never gonna match)and thats what changed re our ability to get henry. The timeline fits.

Thats possible but brisbane wont really know until after the trade period how many spare rookie spots they have so i dont think this happens until later.

I agree, and I think it's the same with Grundy too. Once targets one and two were no longer gettable, we just moved on to three and four (Bruhn and Henry).

Mackie referenced that we miss out on players from being priced out. But ofc opposition fans only focus on the ones that nominate us. Same with Geelong area- nobody thinks about the players that never consider us because they want Melbourne city only

Mackie whistling a different tune about Sav today…

Wonder if they feel we're likely to land all 3 trade targets, and doing so would mean needing to ensure we have adequate currency to do so while also leaving us with only 1 spot on draft night

If they're wanting to use even 2 picks on draft night then it would mean at least one more player off the list

Thats the other issue. We were chasing grundy hard until he decided he wanted to stay in melb (location was ths issue there as to why he didnt pick us) so we didnt expect to have picks and cap free for bruhn and henry. Mackie saying we dont normally chase 20yos was a clue, we only pivoted to them once the other targets fell through..as you say they were the next best players on our possibles list.

Bowes he sounded much different though sounds like we have been chasing him for a fair while.

Could sledge the other list managers till they give in

If its the list spot (ie we need more list spots for the trade ins) we would be more likely to delist and rookie simpson than sav imo.
Its more the first part of your post if all three players nominate us and our picks alone arent enough currency to get all done thats when you think about trading sav (for currency to close the deal).

Simpson seems something of the forgotten player so far this off season, but I wonder if it'll be a similar situation to what's happened the past couple of seasons with someone like Narkle - out of contract going into the trade period before being a last signing following the trade period once list spots & such was known

I'd hope it's a known situation with Simpson about how things may play out, and we'll have clarity on it sooner than later

Yes similarity there but given hes confirmed the 2 rookies elevations which leaves us with 1 senior list spot (if 3 trades in) i think he will be delisted and re rookied so we can take a 2nd draft pick.

I still look forward to seeing what this famous ‘culture’ looks like in 5 or 6 years time when Selwood, Hawk, Danger, etc are no longer with us. I cant recall our culture being so highly spoken of through our 07 - 11 period, makes me think it may be player related more so than club. Time will tell.
That's why we appointed Tom Harley as captain to improve the culture and he did a great job of it. Was a fantastic selection. I think we only had a few rogue players like SJ that needed a bit of "culture corralling".
Sad to see him look so dejected in Q3 during the granny.. okay maybe not :p
