I think Mack might have been talking in half truths about Henry.

Yes, he might have only come to a concrete decision 2 weeks ago, but him not signing a new contract was conspicuous all season and we were clearly the most obvious choice if he was going to leave Collingwood. I find it difficult to believe that we weren’t at least monitoring Ollie’s situation for at least a year.

I suspect Mack is publicly playing a straight bat re: Ollie because it does neither us or Ollie no good to say “yeah, we have been into him since the day he was drafted”.
It was Ollie who decided to come to Geelong. He took so long to make a decision because he was waiting on Geelong.

Imagine if we got a pick higher than Hawthorns and Thorp’d it up. Yikes

Hawthorn is the worry. Aside from the Selwood Thorpe history ..... they've publicly declared an interest in Clark and see him as a future leader. We got lucky with Joel - with a bit of luck we'll get lucky with the kid he mentors.

The least likely of the trades that work in our favour I think. Time will tell. Best chance is that a couple of clubs with early picks pull surprise moves and there's someone at 6 that Hawthorn can't ignore instead of Clark.
Hopefully the Hawks get docked picks for their current crisis.

This kid reads well... I'd just wonder about investing an early pick on an interstate tall that will not get games for multiple years...

Weight: 93kg

Leagues: SANFL Under 18s

  • ANALYSIS

  • SUMMARY

STRENGTHS:
  • Athleticism
  • Contested marking
  • Contested work
  • Follow-up
  • Strength

IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Disposal consistency
  • Scoreboard impact

Likely to be the first ruckman off the board in this year's draft, Barnett ticks a lot of the boxes for a modern day AFL ruckman. Standing 202cm and already quite physically developed, Barnett uses his size and strength to dominate the ruck contest. His vertical leap proves his scope to be a capable tap ruckman and his athleticism allows him to be a clearance threat when the ball is there to be won. It's not uncommon to see Barnett first to the loose ball at stoppage, side-stepping away from defenders and kicking long inside forward 50.

His impact on the game is not isolated to his ruck and stoppage work. Barnett is equally capable around the ground, again drawing on his athleticism to find open space as a marking option and link-up player. He shows good timing and clean hands, which makes contested marking one of his greatest strengths. It's his ability to read the play, particularly when stationed behind the ball, that suggests there could potentially be a role for him in defence at the next level, though ruck seems to be his most likely position.

Barnett has had some really special moments by foot, showing an uncanny ability to turn onto his right foot and deliver a low ball to find a teammate. That quality of ball use is not often seen in prospects of his size and if he can find some consistency with that level of disposal, it would add a pretty special string to the ruckman's bow.

Finishing with four goals to his name from 12 games in the SANFL U18 competition was more a reflection of his role as the primary ruck, rather than his ability as a forward. However, if Barnett can further develop his forward craft, he can become even more impactful.

Although already quite physically well-developed, he'll likely need a pre-season or two to refine his body and adjust to the nuances of the AFL game. There's still a rawness to Barnett that suggests there's some untapped potential in him, with the South Australian possibly offering some good value from the second round, onwards.

I think its going take a lot of injuries for us to pick him. I Holmes and MOC go down ..maybe. but it depends what our total list is like. I cant see them bring in these players and not thinking they are on the edge of selection ..at a min.
I don’t.

He was in close contention for our finals team that had 1 injury of note (Holmes).

The chances of us having an injury list like that again is remote.

I would go so far as to argue that if he is fit he is more likely than not to be in our Round 1 team.

It was Ollie who decided to come to Geelong. He took so long to make a decision because he was waiting on Geelong.
Would it be accurate to say that he saw an opportunity to come home sooner rather than later with the Hopper deal falling through and was waiting on Geelong to confirm they were in a position to get a deal done?

We all seem set on Clark, but we've already got more mids than you can poke a stick at - assuming Bruhn and Bowes come and one of the recent draftees steps up.

If we do get pick 7 perhaps we should look at a player with a difference - a left-footer would be a good start, especially given the key role our only 2 lefties played for us in the finals ha ha.

Or is Clark just manifestly better than others around that mark?

I like the idea of Phillipou, but he looks very boom or bust which is usually the case with these next-gen type midfielders. Could be Bont, and could very easily be RCD, Jansen, Constable etc.

Given our influx of young mids I think we'd be willing to take the risk, but as usual I'll leave this up to the experts. No use locking yourself into a player when Mackie and Wells are looking at someone completely different.

I understand people being concerned about game time being on offer but if Stephens, Bruhn, Bowes or whoever can just zoom out a bit, our whole midfield besides Parfitt & Holmes is 30+ If you’re good enough there will be plenty of chances Over the next 2 seasons

It depends on how you see the draft going. I think if Sheezel is there they would be looking at him
If Mitchell is traded (as some are saying) then I think they'll want to beef up their midfield.

Given the Hawks CEO (Justin Reeves) moved to Hawthorn from Geelong (reckon the family is from Moggs), and they drafted his son (Ned) then I think there's a chance a few lads at Hawthorn have some sort of connection with Jhye Clark. There's also Worpel with a strong Falcons link.

But even taking all that into account, people I know through the Falcons say he's close to Selwood, the club has been in close contact, and Clark had a preference to stay local if it worked out. As much as Ned Reeves is the ruckman at Hawthorn and there seems to be a link, I reckon there's a good chance Clark knows Toby Conway pretty well and would like the idea of playing in the same midfield and reuniting after the Falcons.

Quite a few mids will follow Selwood out the door pretty soon as well.

Guthrie
Danger (will move to a permanent forward)
Menegola
Blicavs
Duncan

All on the wrong side of 30.

Is he contracted for 1 more?

If he secures a 2 year deal he might look at his options particularly if he’s best 22

Yes free agent end 2023(menegola)

Yep.

Yes Phillipou would be perfect - tallish, booming left-foot kick, gets the ball, appears to be versatile. It's weird to agree with Kobe who bagged me without mercy recently, but there you go.

Other interesting possibilities are Weddle and Ginbey - both defenders I think, albeit the latter is from WA.

The odds are Clark will make a player, but will he be the next Sam Walsh?

Mackie was pretty clever when asked how long they'd been speaking with Henry about a move back. The response was - it really only landed in the last couple of weeks.

What the lazy journalist should have asked was - how far back were you in discussions with Henry's manager.

They are two entirely different scenarios but I suspect Mackie has just been careful not to put noses out of joint at Collingwood, knowing that goodwill is often the key to getting these deals done.

If we do get Bowes +7 And get a sniff that Clake will go before then do we get involved with the JHF deal and Send 7 to Port Adelaide maybe ask for duursma or Sinn and there F1

You would think PA F1 would be somewhere between 8-14 anyway

Or we draft best available Clark or no Clark.

We don’t have to pick a falcon
