So your saying the Cats won the trading period by 8 lengths - racing talk wise

Watching that Caulfield Cup of yesteryear - i must say its the best/most interesting thing in this 291 page Crapathon

So thanks putting up that vision
Thanks for that.
I was talking about the whole year combined.
And I was considering Secretariat's Belmont win by 31 lengths, but that would have been just plain narcissistic.

we did cave to a degree. ..although I think we did it to ensure we took care of Ollie.
Not really, we put Cooper Stephens & Sava out here to see if we could facilitate the Ollie trade, regardless of all the BS that is spoken on BF & media, that's how the Cats operate, they aren't in the business of screwing other clubs whom we are associated in potential trades, our trade record over a long period of time in doing 'fair trades' is a testament to that fact, great work by the boys once again with a 10/10 mark!.

PS - we also retained our F1 which no one would have expected us to keep knowing that we'd nail all 3 incoming draft trades PLUS we have P7 thrown in for good measure and when taking into consideration we haven't had a under 10 draft pic since Joel in 2006, all is good down at Cattery.

Our round 1 team next year will pretty much be our GF team apart from Bowes/Parfitt coming in for Selwood, not sure why anyone would think otherwise, going to be a lot of unhappy players not getting games
Like 2022, they will have a plan to rest quite a few 'senior' players throughout the season. I'd expect Dangerfield, Smith, Duncan, Tuohy, Rohan and even Hawkins to all miss games. There will be ample opportunities for the next gen.

I recon they wanted a future as we wouldn’t be using picks this year. He will be a free agent next year can go for compo. Will help as we only have a r1 and it’s a stronger draft. Keep Sav for key position depth for injury also.

Sav as depth is more valuable than p33 this year.
Who knows what happens by the end of next year, his value could go up or sink, but who are our KP depth players for next year? Neale & Sav.
It's a judgement call they've made, and I think the right one.

Disappointed we have lost Stephens but you have to be ecstatic overall. Copper goes the way of other first round picks like Thurlow, Lang, Smedts, Cocky and Clark.

Lucky our last couple of first rounders have been handy - Holmes and SDK. Let’s hope our next 2 are as well.

Only if we split 7... If Clark, Cadman, Busslinger all gone... I suspect we might split

They won't be all gone. Cadman definitely. Clark is I reckon 70% chance to be there. Busslinger definitely available. Would they use a pick 7 on a intercepting defender? Have my doubts.

Holmes in for O'Connor
I'd consider Henry for Rohan pending form
Could see Bowes or Bruhn for Bews and Atkins again pending form.

very different players. I cant see Dempsey being an inside player for years ..if ever.
No doubt very different player in short term and I agree not likely to be a bull in long term - that is not his super power.

But in short term I would think we are well covered and the latest recruits would have squeezed cooper out of the rotation (rather than dempsey). I think in short term dempsey is a back up for smith on the wing and any high half forward that gets injured/rested.

Long term I can see him (if he makes it at all!) as a midfielder or wing. Midfield isn’t out of the question and not just an “outside player”. He does get a high proportion of his disposals as contested but much more in an “extraction” quick hands type a way rather than crass and bash (will never be that I don’t think)

Yet apparently we're still meant to be hanging onto Stephens.

If everyone's healthy (which won't happen, but one can dream) our VFL team could be right up there at the top end of the ladder, as well as the seniors obviously.

He will play a lot of afl next year but thats more a reflection on how deep the hawks have cut their squad. Agree on the rest. Cooper is a ripping bloke and will be solid but not an A grader. In hindsight we should have probably taken georgiades but everything looks better in hindsight

Clubs only get to take one future legend of the game per draft, those are the rules.

We took SDK

Agreed, brilliant piece of work. I didn't see how we'd hold onto our future 1st but we did it.

We're not in the game of taking a bunch of stabs in the draft and hoping one or two stick.

We are trying to fill specific needs for an experienced squad, without a stack of time to develop youngsters.

Targeting a single early pick instead of multiple late ones gives us the best opportunity to pick someone that can play a "best 25-28 squad" role in the near future.

They may even do it more in 2023. 2002 a lot of it was forced other than Selwood and danger where they were extra cautious. And the odd other player.

The risk of over doing it in 2022 was that it didn’t work! Now it did I reckon they can do it without being overly concerned about dropping a game or two.

The other point is I reckon the people retired or traded played over 50 games in 2002 (someone will correct me?). So with 3 new recruits and draft or two it probably evens out in terms of games out and expected games for new players.

Having said that it will be very competitive for those wanting to play more than they did in 2022 like Neale and first years. But that is a good thing

We have over 20 players coming out of contract at end of 2023 so lots to play for in addition to back to back!

Think I was more frustrated with Pies getting their way than actually losing CS, 25 was a fair pick and to carry on that they would let him walk was just unreasonable of them, esp after pushing so many players out of their club the last 2-3 years.

That aside it's a good trade period, would rather keep Sav then CS as the depth is just too important to replace.
Does Menegola get another crack in the 22? I think he will struggle to get back into the side

Who is going to write the first blow by blow inside word article about the Ollie Henry trade? Curious to know which of the journo leaks were accurate and which weren't.

Really happy with that trade period.

Sad to lose Cooper but with the names coming in plus development of Knevitt, Whyte, Jhye Clark? and hopefully Willis and Kroeger - can see why we traded him to get Ollie/why he may have wanted to leave.

I didn't realise Cooper was a Hawks man (based on Hawthorn's Twitter) so obviously would have wanted the move once offered especially with guaranteed playing time assuming he stays fit, so wish him the best.

Keen as for next year now - especially with pick 7 due to come onboard.
