I'm not sure the trade cost ends up materially different.

Cost in picks no. But smith will probably cost more in terms of wages and is a bigger risk coming off the ACL.

In fairness, having Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron in the way is one hell of a barrier.
Being held out of senior team by 2 blokes with 1300 goals between them.. not like he’s behind Rory Lobb and Jessie Hogan and not getting games.
Arguably behind the 2 best players at the position in the game.

Patience grass hopper… patience..
go Catters

Jessie Hogan is a very good player, but resigned with GWS for 2 years.
A pretty short deal, I thought he would sign for a bit longer.

There was a couple interesting exchanges between Rodney Eade and Rohan Connelly on the footyology podcast the other day which gives me a good deal of hope for Neale.

1. Talking about the way in which geelong brings kids through. We give them a specific role and say, go out there and do these specific things and that's all we need. Giving them a role that is within their capabilities and slowly adding to their repertoire as they go.

2. Ben Brown in Melbourne's forward structure. Ben Brown objectively a limited player in many ways but the way they use him is that he just demands a defender because you can't sleep on him. Then he uses his leading pattern to draw other defenders and create space for the real targets in Fritsch and Pickett.

Replace Fritsch with Henry and Pickett with Stengle, and suddenly Neale is adding a forward structure at least as good as Melbourne's (admittedly weak) structure using guys under 24 with significant scope for improvement and time to add other kpf options.

Melb don't use Ben Brown to his strengths at all. Brown has near blicavs levels of fitness covering 15.5km on average when at North. When he isn't allowed to run the defender into the ground he struggles to get seperation

That's the main reason why I think Neale in the role would have upside. Neale is an athletic beast and once we find one way to use him in the seniors I'm certain we'll add strings to his bow and use him in other, better, ways as he develops.

How many sides would take Ollie Henry and say to him "go pick up marks and kick goals" and that's it? Contrast to the way Ollie's game has changed this year to bring in ground level players. He wasn't doing that last year.

yeah the part of Ollie's game that's really impressed me is the development of his game outside his strengths. Running down Sicily, his follow up work after going for a mark in the Adelaide game. After a 41 goal season I wondered if he'd regress a bit this year but he's only getting better

Yeah last year he showed what he was great at coming in, that he can time a jump to stick marks others can't then follow up for a really reliable goal. The knocking down to advantage as clearly as he has been doing it feels new. Better ground level presence too.

I was getting worried he might have been a one trick pony

I said 5th to 8th preseason and I stand by that. Given the transition of the midfield I count that as bullish
Fair enough. I am still unsure where we sit. Our midfield is quite a concern... Even the weekend game against the hawks saw some embarrasing periods of dominance against

Let's just say the Smith & Perkins stuff is legit, but in all likelihood we can only get one.

Little poll, who does the Geelong BigFooty board prefer? I'm taking Perkins personally.

I agree...but I suspect if both said they want in then we will do what we can to make both trades work

I like and respect that attitude more than the player who after one year cracks the sads, demanding a trade home otherwise they'll sit out the next season

He may well decide after his first contract that Perth isn't the place for him, but respect for sticking it out IF that's how things play out

I feel that as long as you have some kids who can qualify as Father Son and others qualify as NGA then others who can be signed as RookieB who do not even have to submit to the draft at all...... then there will be some kids that rightly feel like their rights have been infringed upon ... and will feel like they can can do what ever .
