I wouldn’t draft him at all based on what I’ve seen. Way, way too slow.
Cripps, Mitchell, Boak, Steele, Oliver, Dunkley, Green, Libretore, Neale, Viney and Wines.

There’s a group of players who either still are or have been a grade players who don’t seem to have an issue with not being overly quick.

Chuck in M and B Crouch aswell as Taylor Adam’s as very good B graders Atleast.

It’s not the be all and end all

Have you seen Stevens play? His lack of speed is a liability, he would be much slower than the blokes you mentioned.

Just the one game but there’s no way in any alternate universe he’s slower than Tom Mitchell
My point is you don’t need to be blessed with Speed to be an afl footballer
In the forward and back half yes
But as a pure inside mid, no you don’t

I would wager a large amount of money that he is slower than Tom Mitchell. You don't have to be quick, but you need to be able to keep up with your opponent on the spread and defensively, that's why Rockliff fell out of favour at Port.

JPK & Sam Mitchell make Georgie look like Usain Bolt. They're two of the best midfielders of this generation.

I'm with calder_daddy, it's not the hindrance that many think it is.

As an inside mid, and on the spread that you mention, endurance is infinitely more important than speed.

It's just so rare to contested mids in an open paddock, 90% of their game is in the trenches, with the running they do take on more of a marathon than a sprint.

Someone like Cripps for example was only a liability on the spread when he bulked up a couple years ago, and didn't have the ability to run like he once did.

Steven's isn't Ben Cousins in terms of endurance, but he's not Charlie Constable either. He's already got a decent base of endurance, and that's without shedding the extra kilos he's carrying.

If we're taking him as a later pick, I can't see anything wrong with it. You take the risk in that scenario of getting a Hately/Jansen to end up with a JPK/Cripps.

They still reflect value taken out of the draft pool.
4me They have no value. It is a bid and that's about it.
A bid that is simply matched by an allocation of picks their team has.
They are an illusion of being in the draft pool but in reality are simply not.
Those players are not in all seriousness going to go anywhere else other than the teams that have their rights.
To think otherwise is just plan silly.
We will have the pick of the 8th best player available.
Walter & Read are not available so we don't even have them on our draft board.
Other than forcing certain teams to use their collateral of picks to be used.
That is why we never talk about drafting Read or Rogers or even Croft.. Why? Coz they are not available.

Here's me thinking it was his off field stuff that alienated him from many of his team mates.

No rookie upgrades for us, so we’ll go into the draft with 5 live picks, which would leave two open list spots.

So either splitting 8 is looking more likely, there is a possible DFA signing but we’re waiting to see what happens draft night, or leaving remaining list spots for SSP to see if we actually anyone left at that stage.

Have I interpreted that right?

I wasn't a fan of Rudd this year. He looked way too slow.

Fair enough not the quickest but one of the biggest tanks for his size. 6.17 2km for a 193cm. Coupled with his footy iq, marking and leadership. Pretty good package.
Scotty Lucas clone, he kicked +450 goals... Had the turning circle of a Mack Truck too lol

Rudd might keep growing, he's 193cm, might get to 195cm.

If he’s like TR then he isn’t afl standard
Problem for Rockliff was he wasn’t the hardest trainer and was extremely arrogant.
No brainer why the lions wanted him out and he struggled at port.
Stevens has age on his side, the ability to train speed
He has the power, speed is possible to come from that

Don't think we'll have much to worry about in that department.

Stevens' big drawcard outside of his size is his leadership and intangibles. Just a good fella all round. He's no TR, and if he doesn't make it, it won't be from being a dickhead.

It's a miracle TR was ever made captain. Professionalism off the field, and treatment of his teammates is some of the worst in recent times.

He really epitomised everything that was wrong with the Lions at the point in time.

Another option is trading a future pick/s to get back into this year's draft.

He ain’t Dangerfield (who was the best mid in the league when we got him), but he would have been our best midfielder by some margin this year as a 22yo. So, he’s definitely costing more than a late first rounder
Fair point. A combination of tested depth, old age, and undeveloped youth was pushed to the limit this year so I agree he definitely would have improved our midfield and probably racked up a few votes the weeks where depth was short.

Will he be our best inside midfielder in years to come?...

Well he's being played on the wing currently which isn't a great sign. He seems to be a bit like a Holmes type, which we want, but wouldn't want to sell the farm for.

I would still be extremely excited if he joined our club and then there's the poster boy / publicity aspect.
