Has anyone got that statistic that Nathan Buckley used to show how winning hitouts is essentially the most useless thing in the game of afl in influencing who wins a game??

Hence why Scott and co couldn’t give two rats asses about journeyman ruck and rightfully so. They offer nothing
Mr Meow was it you that keeps posting the screenshot of winning % versus hitout %? Or catempire ?

I couldn’t find it, but given he was an ex afl coach and a successful one I will add who got agonizingly close to winning a grand final.. it sheds some insight into how some coaches out there perceive rucks as essentially potatoes..

Didn’t a premiership winning Richmond side used to ruck Shaun grigg as a backup ruckman?? Which is a mockery of the position…

I think Scott falls well and truly into this camp by rucking blicavs

Best I can do is this zero hanger article citing 51.4% of the time you win the hit outs you win the game. Interestingly even hit outs to advantage only get a 54.2% win rate.

So essentially the ruckmans rule of hitouts has become redundant. Everything else is what matters.

If a Premiership team having Shaun grigg as a backup ruck is not proof of that I don’t know what is.

Has been like this a while.

I think people get a mental image of dominant rucks controlling games because on the rare occasion it happens there's not much you can do about it.

Me. Numerous times.

People still slow on the uptake at how useless hitouts are.

Spot on… which is why when people go on and on about us recruiting a ruckman then get confused why Scott doesn’t want the journeyman rejects… this stat should clear it up.

Also how Shaun grigg was a backup ruck in a premiership team

A young Brad Ottens and Dangerfield would cost more than arm and a leg each. But before that they have to exist first and then be on the market before we can even try to pay those arms and legs.

The best 3 ruckmen on the market last year
1. Grundy who didn't want us twice
2. Goldstein who didn't want us twice
3. Soldo who isn't very good

The best 3 midfields on the market last year, none of whom really move the needle.
1. Taylor Adams
2. James Harmes
3. James Jordon

English is out of contract and Marshall has been rumoured. I'm not saying we will find them, just that we should be more speculative and search for more boom/bust options in the form of a big bodied midfielder and ruckmen.

A sample size of 1 proves nothing.

Collingwood won last season with a player from the USA in their team. Does that prove that every team now needs at least 1 North American to win the flag?

Did you actually read the context of the discussion?? It was in relation to a statistic showing how winning hitouts only results in a winning result 51% of the time. The Shaun grigg ruck comment was pointing out this fact in its most blatant form highlighting how tap ducks are useless

Would the North American have to be belted in the back of the head hard enough to detach both retinas and then be forced to wear prescription sunnies for the rest of their career in order to fulfill contract conditions?

If they vote [redacted] can [redacted] do the belting?:p

As our best team for many years has included a specialist ruckman, Stanley, wouldn’t it make sense to have a better specialist ruckman than Stanley, so we could get the 51% winning edge and even more if the hit outs went to advantage?
What about the disastrous final when Stanley was left out due to ‘rain’ or the recent match when TDK walked all over us rucking for Carlton?

There has been enough big matches where a quality ruck has smashed us in the ruck and around the ground, but especially when they win so many hit outs leading to so many clearances and our defense used to be under the pump.

Blicavs isn't doing enough around the ground anymore to justify how many hit outs he loses, at least SDK recently was getting 20ish disposals a week and using it well.

Another unfortunate negative that has occurred with Reece Stanley in 2024 which was none of his doing and that is the new rule change where the opposing ruckmen is now allowed to push the opposing ruckmen in the chest when he is jumping over him in the centre bounce contest, as in previous years it was free kick to the offending ruckman who was putting his arm out and pushing his opponent in the chest.

As an example, in past games/years Stanley could jump high over a ruckman such as Marc Pittonet for Carlton and he'd win a great centre clearance for us. But in the first Blues game this year in the first quarter, Pittonet in the centre bounce contests continued to push Reece Stanley hard in the chest and in doing so, Reece would then completely lose his balance and end up on his arse, which can prove to be a very dangerous tactic by the opposing ruckman. But the new rule now allows for that to happen, which obviously favours the stronger more physical ruckman in the centre bounces as in previous seasons that wasn't the case, as the more athletic but lesser physical ruckman could easily jump over the less agile but more physical ruckman and create a great centre clearance.

The new rule to me seems completely unfair and the only reason why I think the AFL has introduced this rule has got to do with the more athletic ruckman jumping high above the opposing less athletic ruckman, with his his knee possibly 'endangering the head' of the less agile ruckman, as I cannot think of any other reason why they have brought the new rule in. But because they have, they have virtually have put a death notice on Stanley's future, if not for 2024 it has certainly done so beyond, which in fairness to Reece, he has been on his last legs anyway but this new rule has really cruelled him from his greatest asset.

It also should be noted that Stanley changed his tactics in that first Blues game after quarter time by coming in from side of centre bounce and pretty much just trying to body Pinnot as well as trying to jump a little but that one big advantage that he did have which was his spring and jump in centres bounces had been taken away from him.

Regarding rucks - I was out at lunch today and overhead a conversation between 2 gentlemen who were discussing this exact same situation, but in regards to Carlton

Their comments were along the lines of:
  • hitouts alone are essentially useless and ruckmen need to offer more; the best option is to utilise a player who can neutralize ruck contests instead
  • TDK is wasted in the ruck and provides more to team when playing as a KPF or KPD
  • they didn't seem to think too highly of Pittonet

It was interesting to gauge the POV of those who support other clubs and see for that aligns or differs from discussion amongst Geelong fans
