Geelong: Oliver

MFC: F1 (Carlton)

Carlton: SDK

Look, it's not ideal, but Willo_'s right.

If the club has immense faith in COS, and desires to keep their future first too, it might not be the worst thing in the world.

My bigger worry would honestly be our ruck stocks if Stanley/Conway went down rather than our defenders.

JHenry & COS won't be going away anytime soon, and Kolo & Stewart have a while left too.

Yeah, I’m not sure at all about what the trade would look like.

We coped without SDK a lot of this year. Can probably cope again albeit we wouldn’t want Henry to get injured.

I hope you are correct but my mail tonight suggests otherwise.

I know his management are fielding offers despite what they've said (managers always lie about this stuff to die heat down) and Carlton and at least 2 other vic clubs are pushing hard. But my understanding is no one is willing to pay Geelong price (which is 2 r1s or equivalent) so I doubt it happens this year. Next year is pretty likely though which is why we need to look at replacement talls this year and next.

That’s a hideous trade for us in isolation
Not saying it will happen, but I tend to prepare for the the scenario we wouldn't like first, rather than the scenario we would.

Every chance we get something ourselves, but I wouldn't expect it to be huge.

SDK for us is like Smith to the Bulldogs IMO.

Both players who would've commanded two top 10 picks at different stages ('21, '22) but aren't being sold during that period.

Henry is too much of an injury risk with the foot stuff and our ruck stocks are terribly thin.
We would want to bring in a mature option before we let sdk go anywhere (and there aren't many decent ones on the market this year).

Oliver isn't worth a r1 unless melb are paying a huge amount of the contract.
And we would want more than 1 r1 for sdk (I think it's fair but the club would want more).

We would also need to at very short notice get either a mature kpd or ruck to replace him and it's probably too late for that this trade period. Hence I think sdk next year is more likely.
Imagine if Henry's foot injuries re-surface..

SDK might end up being a gun ruck tbh... He does find the footy a lot around the ground.

If COS is a gun Key Defender, we just need to get those Mids in Oliver and Baz... I'd be happy to offload someone like a Clark if that helps get it done. Try keep next year's first round pick if we can.

SDK going was always on the cards (even if it doesn't eventuate).

I was surprised so many people thought it was zero chance.

Deep down I don't think the club rates him as high as the say they do.
If we lose our shit here and ask for a ridiculous haul as supporters, we'd be doing the exact same thing we've all laughed at Dogs supporters for doing for weeks.

The guy is immensely talented, but just like Smith, he's coming off two years that weren't his best.

If there's any legs to this, think we need to mentally prepare that this 2x firsts stuff is a pipedream.

Post 2022 - It would barely get you a seat at the table.

Post 2024 - I'm not so sure.

I'd like the record to officially show that I don't want SDK to go...

Just that it wouldn't actually shock me greatly if it happened

And that managers are absolutely full of shit and people shouldn't take stuff they say as gospel

I don't know how we cover the ruck situation.

Like it or not he'll need to do a lot of it

That is a dead set crap trade scenario TBH.
I don’t think we are that stupid.
Oliver isn’t worth a pick inside 20 or even 30 with that salary.
SDK is worth more than pick 11 alone.
Yeah nah pass.

Fair call, but the big difference is SDK is contracted and we haven't put an insulting offer in front of him. I dare say that if we entertain a trade, we can ask more based on those factors alone.

From a team balance POV, he's pretty handy insurance in the ruck department when all we've got is Stanley on his last legs and Conway who may or may not come good (Furphy and Edwards nowhere near it yet). Plus he leaves a big hole in our KPD stocks. Bulldogs supporters have been rattling on about how Richards has stepped up this year so Smith's loss won't be as keenly felt (which is probably true). Let's not kid ourselves that SDK will be as easy to replace for us as Smith is for them.

I don't either, but I acknowledge that something might have to give here and that's only if the rumour is true.

Just big on fairness, and we can't let ourselves do exactly what we laugh at the Dogs & Dees supporters for doing.

COS is 19 years old. SDK was a big outlier for impacting in the role at a young age and he had 2 years on him.

I don't think it would be ridiculous to be saying he's worth more than any of the players we have coming in. We'll more

Close hails from mt Gambier played for Glenelg I think in SANFL. Perhaps they think there is a go home factor?

Maybe

But there’s the odd comment where Brad seems highly rated amongst opposition fans, maybe more so than he is seemingly rated by Geelong fans at times

I’ve posted the comment on here from approx 2 years who when JHF was looking at going to Port (so prior to the agreed trade), and a Port fan who had no interest in JHF but was keen on a trade involving Close for Butters with the beliefe that Butters would be out the door to Geelong in time

It was a really random comment but stuck with me and started seeing more connecting Butters to us

Trading SDK would be brave.

Where exactly do you find another 204 cm agile and skilled young player who has proven to elite KPD, developing as a potential ruck, and could ultimately fill a major gap as a tall forward in a few years.

To get Butters, I would consider it. To bring in Oliver or Smith would seem too bigger risk unless they think he’s going next year anyway

I agree that that trade in isolation looks average but I am sure there would be other picks involved and possibly also players. Could depend on what Carlton would want to do with SDK because if they see him as a back up ruck / defender to TDK then they would possibly look to move someone like Pittonet on who could be surplus to requirements and is contracted ?. Might get David King on our side because he loves Pittonet as a ruckman for clearance work and with the midfield we would have would be beneficial.
