He is spot on.
The risks far outweigh the benefits.

Back in our development program as per usual.
Clark, Bruhn, Clohesy, Knevitt, one or two of those will likely have a break-out year.
Cats hierarchy go all in for a Reid, Cadman or Butters over the next 12-18 months :thumbsu:

It's a good article and Pete is a good writer.
But I wouldn't agree because his article is based on the premise that we can get other players instead of Clayton which is guesswork. We don't know whether those players like Reid etc will want to come here in future whereas we know Clayton wants to come now and aside from the off field issues we know what his playing ability is.
If we could get Reid butters etc sure most people would prefer that. But if we can't I'd argue CO is more useful to us than the r2 we would spend acquiring him.

I'm also not that worried about a risk of him influencing our younger guys badly, we have the best welfare and coaching staff in the league and I back us to deal with it.

The issue is that the aflpa don't allow clubs to put specific clauses in contracts that make it easy for clubs to sack and payout outside the cap. Therefore if he stuffs up and has to retire early we will have to carry his salary on the cap until 2030 which will affect our cap ability to chase other players. This is clearly the big risk. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't get him in it means we should push hard with melb over how much salary they pay to reduce our risk figure.

34 isn't enough for a future 2nd it will cost Carlton more (which is probably why they want to move Kennedy to upgrade 34 into an earlier 2nd).
And I still don't think Port would accept 14 alone for Houston it will cost Carlton both their r1s (with something coming back).

Whilst posters are on a hot streak what about Pete Ryan’s new article on the Bailey Smith trade. Always appreciated 🙏

Except that Oliver is 3 times the player Smith is , if you stick the facts rather than the hype , Oliver has got alot more on his playing resume than two 7th placings in the Melb B/F

If Smith was joining Coll/Haw/Rich etc , the 80% of posters here who are raving about him as a player , those same 80% would be bagging him for saying ive out grown a club , where his best finish to date in a best and fairest is 7th !!!

🤣 I just wanted to read the article

I hope we are having a good look at Kennedy.

27 years old, experienced but not too many kms on the clock.

Hard trainer and committed Xian from what I hear.

Excellent club man, and much loved by other players.

No risk to culture - in fact would engage with Cats culture and grow it.

Strong inside player.

I would think pretty reasonable cost.

Good fit for us on a 3 year deal.

Hi Guys - I stumbled upong this is twitter - Not sure if this specific info has been mentioned before in relation to a property purchase by Zak Butters half an hour out of Geelong or not - or the accuracy of the comment - it is in reply to a Sam Edmund comment by a Jimmy Fazz who appears to be a Carlton supporter (so assuming no biased skin in the game)
I only post this as it potentially has Geelong fingerprints all over it (IF CORRECT)

More than finger prints, old vaseline all over it.
And true.

No one will ever replace the Oliver shaped hole in my heart. 😭

As it should. He’s a current B2B AA and under contract.

Don't worry, we've also been told throughout the season that anyone who doesn't think Hardie should have been playing seniors doesn't know anything about football and questions over their opinions

I know some liked Hardie and wanted to see him given a shot, others seemed to have similar thoughts to the club & wouldn't select him - doesn't mean that those of a differing opinions should suddenly have their opinions invalidated

He said he met every target that was asked, but could not crack it over the personnel that already had AFL positions he would suit. He understood and accepted it, seemed philosophical. So it matters little who liked him and who didn't here, he had no opportunity (when you're stiff you're stiff) and is probably better served elsewhere.

The downside for Kennedy is that he is not fast which has been an issue with our midfield. Smith changes that somewhat. But Carlton want to move him not because he is not playing well but they consider their own talented midfield is too one paced. They have pushed him into the forward line as a result.

It will depend on whether Geelong considers he offers more than Bruhn, Atkins and Bowes. He adds size for a start.

Both were very happy and stable at geelong. Sav just wanted guaranteed b22 and Tim Kelly had his partner cracking the sulks but he himself was happy.

Difference I see with Oliver is he has severely declined health wise with mental health troubles and drug addictions which has gotten to the point it has severely impacted his football and is requesting a fresh start.

I honestly can’t see us ever refusing to trade someone under those circumstances. We aren’t like that.

We might hold a content player or two who just wants to leave for a small reason or two, but I can’t ever see us acting that way with a severe health problem like that
Sav was happy to stay but we all know Tim’s wife wasn’t and that would’ve had a bearing on his mental health which would’ve been hard.
In my opinion it wasn’t our greatest hour knowing his family struggles, steaming from his children

A little ironic there’s talk of him going to Freo now, who he didn’t want a bar of back in the day.
They had the better picks from memory also

Duncan has been one of my favourites over the journey, so on one hand I’d love to see home get there. And I’m generally of the opinion that the 23rd picked each week probably doesn’t have a huge bearing on the result. So, if this happens, so be it.

But I would view it almost completely the opposite. Gifting someone games just to reach a milestone, which is what you’re describing, goes completely against the team first mentality which has made our club great of recent years. If they want to manage him through the year and contribute as needed, I think there’s a role for him. But if he’s going to take a list spot and games early in the year off someone who could actually contribute to our team in finals, with the intention of not even being on the list in September, I see it as a bad precedent to set.
Can we move on from Duncan, this is trade rumours forum who cares of he gets another year, if others on the list are better they will play before him. I just have to look at the prelim for that, nis 26 and 2 were over looked and Touhy

yes, he does, better skills that Atkins who has been good but coming to the end.

Better off pumping 15 games into Knevitt instead.

WTF but yeah I guess our last committed Christian that I’m aware of went alright i guess and his old man before that 😇

I've got to disagree with you mate.
Remember how John Newman got to 300? Sitting on the bench. And the bench was an insult back then.

Duncan isn't in our top 25.
We’ve both met Willo_ so we know that, no, he doesn’t remember Newman getting to 300! :D

Kelly entered the national draft again after numerous rejections and knew that could take them all over the country. Tim and his wife would have been desperate for him to be drafted, as life changing.

Geelong gave him a chance after every other club did not value him including both WA clubs. He wasn’t even our first pick. Fogarty at 22 was.

We developed him in the offseason and chose him for the first round. His own ability did the rest, an ability not seen by any other club.

Once he was doing very well, he decided he wanted to go back to WA after just one year. It seems that his wife was the prime mover of this. They would get much more money immediately compared to his second year draft payment.

A lot of fans felt it was a lack of loyalty to the club to want to leave after one year. His twins were born just before he came over to Geelong so the potential family issues were known before he entered the draft. But he did leave after just a one year delay for a lot of money, but he missed out on a premiership and probably a lot of individual awards.

Committed Xian? are you kidding me?

I actually met Tim and his wife as we both had kids in a small autism playgroup, my impression was she was well and truly checked out of the place (Geelong), the club couldn’t have done anything to keep Tim, the value we extracted out of that last year was insane, a top 5 Brownlow result, but I think it was best for him to head home. His boy who was there was non verbal and they had a long and arduous journey to go on.

Not a lot of substance there.
Damo can you tell us, is there any substance to what you've just said?

Just because someone’s opinion doesn’t marry up with yours, it doesn’t mean it’s a bad opinion.
Different views and all that…
Point me to where I said people cannot have an opinion.
I just find it to be a bad call
