Once we get thru the grubby stuff of trades…. and we can look at giving kids a chance ...

it will be interesting to see where this kid goes ...

Tries to play like Cameron …. good role model I guess..

EXTRA WORK PAYS OFF FOR BIG MAN

Mobile Victorian key forward Gabriel Stumpf turned heads at the national draft combine last weekend with his blistering time in the 20m sprint test.

But it perhaps shouldn’t have come as a surprise that the 196cm big man posted the fifth-best 20m sprint time in the combine’s history.

Stumpf ran a time of 2.815 seconds last Sunday, but has been working with a personal fitness and nutrition coach for the past 12 months, with whom he has done a significant amount of speed work.

Running is key for the Northern Knights product, who works hard pushing up the ground from half-forward and models his game on Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron.

“Stumpy’s incredibly athletic,” Knights talent manager Nat Grindal said.

“He’s had a really good year. I think his ceiling is still so high as well. He’s got so much growth and improvement in him. You hope that someone’s willing to take a chance on a kid that’s got a lot of upside.”

Stumpf averaged 2.8 goals a game across four matches for the Knights this year.

What range is he predicted to go in the draft

File under "they don't always say the draft is better next year" for future reference

Historically …. I think every “supa” draft is followed by a thin one …. That we pulled Mackie in 2002 is probably an under appreciated pick looking back at it.

Have to say when I watched the u17’s on GF day … the kids that stood out were all tied to clubs. ..

My bet is it will be the northern clubs who these picks will be the most valuable for… as the point changes for next year means they will need much earlier picks … the type of trade Rich have done to get Bris picks will probably not ba as appealing. I think they traded in 800 plus over value compared to the pick they traded out.

Is there a player you couldn't use this argument to justify?

Heaps of players don't play at all or show nothing of any class.

Clark's performances overall weren't great but he did show moments of mouthwatering class. A couple of handballs with exquisite vision in the lead up to goals against Adelaide and GWS then a spin out of traffic against Port come to mind.

I'm not comparing Clohesy to these guys. I wasn't demanding Hardie get games. I don't see anything in them beyond being honest triers.

And I'm in no way saying he's guaranteed to be a gun. Just that not having much impact as a mid in your 2nd season isn't really instructive of anything and it's way, way too early to write him off given the glimpses of quality he's shown.

Now do Constable, Horlin-Smith and Smedts.

This just shows that most 2nd year players aren't A graders. It tells us nothing about whether a 2nd year player will become an A grader.

Never said it did. Just don't write them off early.

FWIW I never rated Constable one bit. For mine he showed nothing beyond the ability to accumulate possessions without damaging the opponent.

GHS I liked bits of his game but he had major weaknesses with how slow his running and his hands were.

Smedts showed a tonne of talent. I still wonder if he hadn't got those repeated shoulder injuries what he could've been cause his confidence was shot by about year 3-4.

What range is he predicted to go in the draft

Id only be guessing really ….. but the top 30 , even 40 this year is strong and known… so id say after them.

This kids name has more been around since his combine performance and he has gone from not being drafted to being drafted.. … so unless someone will a lot of picks just wants to go early ..id say late. Be second half of the draft or rookie….

but it only takes one club to like him.

His TOG reflects that , all the kids have a fitness and size issue …injecting Smith and Oliver will help ease the need for the kids to take on everything and allow them to develop at their natural pace

Once again …and I’m so very very tired of saying this …the expectation of the kids being guns straight out of the gate is stupid Clark and Co have barely played games for the clubs the posters that are shooting them down need to reevaluate their expectations

with the exemption of Selwood , most of the clubs greats took a very very long time to click and spent a long time in the VFL …it’s a natural development phase not a cause for concern they not only need to be physically developed with AFL conditions but they need time to develop confidence and the skills needed for that level. With Danger and Guthrie out for most of the year it has placed a much higher workload than normal on the kids that weren’t ready for that yet …there’s no shame in that they couldn’t meet that level that’s required just yet.
Hawkins was a club legend 7 years in the making . Got there overnight lol
Go Catters

I'm prepared for a heap of thumbs down & a raft of no's, BUT I'll throw it out the anyway

There's been reports that Carlton has made an approach for SDK offering pick 12 which we declined pretty quickly - if they came knocking again, this time offering picks 12 & 14, is it something we'd potentially consider?

We know that Tom Barrass was linked to Hawthorn, but with them pulling the trigger on that picks trade with Carlton, that potential trade is now on hold - was Barrass's move about specifically getting to Hawthorn or would he be open to playing in the hoops? A ready made KPD option and we could offer a similar deal to what was originally offered by Hawthorn?

We could also use the other pick as a straight swap for Bailey Smith, while keeping our own first round pick

Could open the chance to turn SDK into two ready to go players

Edit - Hawthorn had reportedly offered pick 14 & a second round pick for Barrass and a pick in return, so I was thinking of a similar type offer from us in the above scenario

Yes, because it's seriously overpaying. But they won't offer that for the same reason.

I'd take 12 & 14. I rate SDK, but KPDs are very easy to find.

True, but Knevitt et al aren't worth anything in a trade.

You might say neither is Oliver. Its a face saver ….

“ ….We have moved 1M off our cap, added a kid we have liked since his draft year ..and has been developing nicely in the Geelong system … we see him fitting in our system perfectly etc etc "

I'd be embarrassed if our club president was responding to trade rumours on X (formerly Twitter).
It’s embarrassing… the club is an absolute bunch of amateurs.

I’m saying that… Green (if that’s actually him) giving a bit of lip here isn’t a great sign that they are willing to trade Oliver to me.
