MFC don't want to lose face now by perceptively taking unders (or offering overs) to trade CO which is their conundrum. The only plausible way they survive this PR disaster/crisis with any CO trade to GFC considered palatable in the minds of its players, fans and other stakeholders is to proclaim, "CO was a required player and valued player, CO wanted to depart following a meeting with GFC arranged by his management, we believe MFC has been adequately compensated". (Unfortunately, the reality is none of those three statements will likely be honest or true with any trade to GFC perpetuating their untrustworthiness). Absolute debacle.

Providing we've done our due diligence on Oliver (which we're all assuming they have) then just do it Cats.

It it goes wrong, it goes wrong. At least we gave it a shot. That's more than can be said for most.

So, basically I just got off the phone with my Melbourne source an hour ago and what’s happening is there’s still so much drama happening internally there. Oliver is still making it clear he wants Cats, just not publicly because he is anxious if it doesn’t get over the line the playing group will be disgruntled with him.

The report that the “playing group is happy to see him go” is a little misleading by channel 10. They’d be happy for him to go if it helps him, nobody is going to begrudge him after this and they’ve shown their support. From what I’m hearing is they’re understanding of his position and aren’t pressuring him to stay. But they’re not “happy” in the sense that they can’t wait to see the back of him.

What the report gets right is Demons became disgruntled over the fact Geelong asked for so much of the salary to be paid. The draft pick is believed to be more flexible but Geelong were firm on where they stand on paying X amount of the contract. That’s why Melbourne bridged up publicly, they genuinely want it paid in full to save face and Geelong basically walked away saying “be realistic.” And for now that’s where it ended.

Now, this is why are McClure and Barrett and others reporting it’s not dead. It’s because of this notion that the parties were too far apart opposed to Oliver never being available, which we all know is a lie. So, they’ve deduced along with others internally at both clubs that over the course of this week the gap can be bridged and it won’t necessarily need Oliver making a scene for it to get there.

Unfortunately it still means a trade is unlikely-as I've said from the get go unless Clayton is prepared to take a big paycut and the afl is prepared to approve it (and the first one is unlikely) then the trade won't happen the contract is too big an impediment. Melb were never going to pay 500k a year of his salary and Geelong won't pay 1.3 (even though we have the cap room culturally they won't on a deal like this) so it's just too difficult to execute the trade.

The way I heard the channel 10 report on Oliver was them saying Melbourne would give us a first round pick as "compensation" for us taking on most of his contract. That was the only way it made any sense to me.

Don't forget Smith & Oliver share the same management group - so at least if we decided to drop the pursuit of Smith for Oliver it would save having to make a second phone call. As part of that call though, it's likely there'd also be a mention from them that they'd be having a chat with their client (Oliver), and due to the lack of professionalism shown, I could see a suggesting that he'd be better reconsidering where he sees his future - not a good idea to piss off player managers, especially when multiple high profile players you're linked to share the same management group


And as for the idea what Oliver has only just come to our attention

We've been linked to Oliver for over 12 months - there was plenty of discussion linking Geelong & Oliver this time last year and that talk hasn't gone away this past season

It may not have been seen as a high priority trade in the same manner that the Smith trade is viewed, as they would have known any trade rested on Melbourne, but this isn't some sudden interest that's only just come to the attention of the powers to be at the club - they would have had plans in place should talks ramp up

As stated previously, MFC created this circus It’s unrealistic of them to make ludicrous demands. As supporters, we know Geelong is very fair when trading players. Still, Wells + Mackie are very shrewd + while I think the offer to MFC will increase, paying the full contract, despite the salary cap increase, means foregoing opportunities to draft players like Humphries, who will play for longer than Oliver.
