The Judd trade was an interesting one. Arguably wce did better on field because Kennedy played longer and masten was OK (note a spud). But Judd won multiple b n f s and you can't underestimate the impact he had at Carlton culturally and in terms of marketing he was huge.

Reid in 2-3 years will be almost the most marketable player in the game so whoever gets him gets that massive commercial boost. But it's a risk on field as you would have to trade at least one very quality player for him (like Carlton did with kennedy) so you need to get that call right and trade someone who won't be absolutely elite at wce (or whichever third club us involved) as it's very high risk. Much more so than just trading 2 mid r1s for a gun.

Judd was long ago now ..and trades and movement seem to have changed but was Judd OOC.

It seemed a lot that Car paid . They had the first pick in the draft…was it ever thought they might just pick Judd at P1 ..and keep Kennedy?

Reid will probably be less credentialed and younger than Judd at the time. I doubt he will be a premiership player at WC any time soon.

As far as the concerns raised by some for a Reid trade.. they are fair ..however id counter by say that a trade like has been theorised.. might or might not be OTT cost that it outweighs the benefit. It might damage the list …or it might be worth the trade and more. The Cameron trade has shown that.

If we are to believe the previous WC coach.. there were players ringing him.the club about wanting to play with Reid. He would instantly up the anty on desirability for OOC players especially FA’s. Not having R1 picks for multiple years could be a killer yet we have been so long without a gun outcome from our R1 , its almost an example of it not necessarily being a bridge too far . We would need to find a couple more late picks and it would be handy if we had a Rookie B / FSon as well.

Coming into an era of being expected to trade multiple years for a player. If that was the cost , Id say the club would pay what they had to ..get the deal done then cope with the cost.

Funnily enough, that is probably what they should have done. I don't think I've ever seen anyone suggest that. Cotchin would have been available at pick 3, assuming that Richmond grabbed Kreuzer. Bit of a gamble but there is a chance that Kreuzer could have slid anyway.

Imagine a scenario where Carlton approached WCE with the negotation hand that they're drafting Judd with pick 1.
The offered something like Judd for 1st round pick swap, take it or leave it.

Imagine how marketable that hatedom would have been. Every match between the two would have been a blood match for the next decade

I'm not sure Judd would've agreed to it. He was being courted by many teams and I'm not sure he wanted to destroy his West Coast legacy.

I do like that Carlton gave up a crazy amount for prime Judd in 2007 yet we still got a better contribution from our first pick that year (Harry Taylor at 17).

We got lucky on that. We were taking scooter at that pick until Egan did his foot.

I suppose the P1 Judd was always an option but i don't think he would have agreed to it he didn't want to do it that way.

On the present look only some clubs could afford to pay what Harley will cost as for others it would gut their list. But for clubs that are strong elsewhere and have later picks to balance out the list they can afford to trade 4 r1s etc for him. But ironically enough those will be the clubs that won't have top 5 picks which wce will want. I don't see Harley leaving wce for another bottom team.

So this if he goes will be a real litmus test of player and agent power in the market.

I'd be happy for us to chase him only if we have a walk away point price wise.

Carlton should have passed on him alone for that, if you're focusing too much in the past, you're robbing attention away from the present success.

Every deal is different and Id suppose there is a walk away point in most deals …. but I doubt it would get to that if OOC.

You know how it would go … back and forth, fist thumping and table sledging but an uncontracted Reid would be taken in the draft by who ever had an early pick … Eagles know they lose him for zip so the deal that his preferred destination club came up with would beat that. To some degree it will be the quality of the projected drafts but late R1 picks look a lot worse in trade period and a lot better on draft night

Like you say a litmus test for player power and future pick trades. ..and it would not surprise me if we were at the forefront.
