The key trade from my perspective was the Geelong Touhey trade ........FFS a player and first round for him?

That picked ended up being used for the steal of the draft .....Marchbank, Pickett, and whats his name ?

Pussy's GWS gave all those players away for next to nothing ......once that deal was done, Carlton never needed us, and that was game set & match
Agree that Tuohey trade undermined us, but it's not a "first rounder", it's a likely 3-6 pick downgrade. Not really that bad, and it gave Carlton what it needed to tell us to piss off.

Crows site reporting that Adelaide was not willing to meet Carlton's unrealistic demands. Carlton wanted overs for Gibbs, what ever happened to a fair trade?

Funny because it doesnt seem the club, or other clubs, or really anyone bar a few special supporters actually rated him that highly.

I don't rate him as highly as some of the other players you mentioned either but a champion footy team is the sum of all parts and Lyons brought a specific skill set that none of the players you have mentioned bring.
We had 3 of those players now we have 1.
It just so happens that I see our gameplan as 100% based around that skill set.

It's like saying that 22 Tex Walkers would beat Carlton. Sure Tex has more talent than 19-20 of their players, but the Blues would destroy Texs 22.

The Adelaide Crows were not prepared to meet Carlton’s unrealistic demands in a trade for Bryce Gibbs.

Officials from both clubs met several times in recent days and ultimately could not come to an agreement.

Crows General Manager List Management and Strategy Justin Reid said the Club had explored every avenue to strike a deal.

“Both clubs were well aware of Bryce and his family’s desire to return home, coupled with the fact he is also contracted to Carlton for a further three years,” Reid said.

“He is a quality player and person but like in all trades, there has to be ‘fair value’ for both parties.

“We do not believe that would’ve been the case if we were to hand over at least two first-round draft picks or a combination of players, who are crucial to our short and long term success, as was requested.

“Taking into account a large number of factors, we decided that proceeding with such an arrangement would have been irresponsible list management.”

Reid said the Club wishes Gibbs and his family well for the future.

“Bryce and his management contacted our Club at the eleventh hour prior to trade period,” Reid said.

“Before taking the call, our intent was to head to the national draft in search of quality young talent which is now once again our focus.”

That's all fine and dandy. I have no problem refusing Carlton's demands, But this comment is most annoying.

“Before taking the call, our intent was to head to the national draft in search of quality young talent which is now once again our focus.”
Why weren't we sounding out other quality mids to see if they wanted to win a premiership with us?

Greedy Carlton wanting more than pick 13 and a 3rd rounder for their second best player that is contracted for another 3 years. How DARE they! Adelaide keep saying that if you look at his market value it's around there, except Tom Mitchell is on about another 300-400k a year and OOC. Carlton's deal was heavily front loaded as well, so Crows wouldn't have much remaining on their books for the next 3 years!

Adelaide will finish 5th+ again, they lost midfield depth this year in the trade period.

Don't come posturing here mate, your sad excuse for a club will finish bottom 2 next year.

I don't post on here often but do tend to lurk and read a lot of the forums, but thought I needed to give my 2 cents here. For the people saying it's not the end of the world as Gibbs wasn't worth 2 1st rounders, true, but I think the reason why many supporters are unhappy is that Adelaide didn't do anything this trade period. No back up plan........nothing! We were like that one friend back in Uni who spends all night at the club after one chick, meanwhile the rest of the guys are getting knocked back but straight away move on to the next girl. Outcome, at the end of the night everyone but the one guy goes home and gets laid.

We knew we were losing Danger 18 months ago and we needed to fill a massive void in the midfield, we haven't filled it. It's not just the Gibbs thing. It's a combination of us being in a Premiership window, having a sub-par midfield, needing an good-elite midfield player, not getting one and losing Lyons in the process......and no......Crouches and Milera will not magically instantly get better next year, it will be a gradual improvement........Brad might not even get back to his best.

Champion teams trade and make moves...we don't. It's as simple as that.
Quality post, should do it more often

Nikki, we are a team which is a bee's dick away from being a genuine contender. If Im a guy like Dustin Martin, for example, Im considering Adelaide a genuine option for the right money. The fact that we weren't able to entice a genuine A grade mid here says a lot about our club. The fact that we weren't able to get a guy who wanted to come home, says a lot about our club.

These things dont happen in a split second. They've had months to plan a strategy, and years to configure our list. Yet here we are again, actually one short on our 2016 midfield group.

Im genuinely glad we've kept our first picks for 2016 and 17. But F me, better list management would have seen us in a position to have our cake and eat it too, yet the best tactic we can come up with is to lowball a pretty solid mid to make sure we have enough mid range picks to grab a F/s who is undersized and under paced, and at best is a future prospect. Again, our list management strategy is all over the shop. I'd love to see our version of Hawthorn's planning document. I bet it doesn't exist.
You really think it's as easy for us to attract players as Hawthorn, or any Victorian club for that matter? Cmon. I'm not happy, but be realistic. If Gibbs is out of contract this deal gets done early on for pick 13 and a swap of later picks.

That doesn't mean it was the right decision.... we absolutely should have been trying to improve our mids NOW. Not in 4 years time when a draftee has enough experience....

Not getting Gibbs is not the **** up

Not having another plan is.....

We are building for a premiership don't you get it..... should be ready by the time Eddie is ready to retire

Interesting that we have that in our opening line and combined with his manager's words, not looking pretty for Carlton there.

A response that doesn't even consider Bryce's and his families alleged plight.

What unique skillset did JL bring?
Other than not having a tank to play more than 75% game time?

He's one of the most vanilla players ever...

seems some her expected us to lose 2 firsts for gibbs .. but if we did do that trade ... they would have been angry we gave too much LOL ... so if you're pissed we didnt get gibbs you'd be happy with 2 firsts?

Do you swallow everything the club puts out? Prior to the trade period we had the Chairman of our List Management Committee come out and say we need to add elite talent to our midfield.

For God's sake Jen, a bit of critical analysis wouldn't go astray.

Far out, losing your 22nd best player is not worth having a cry about.

There are 5 players that could immediately step in and do the same if not better, especially after an injury free preseason (Menzel and Knight spring to mind)

That's not really the point though. We didn't overpay for Gibbs, that's fine. We traded Lyons for what seems like a pretty crap deal, not great, but okay. We did NOTHING else. We have a clear deficiency in our midfield when compared to the other teams we'll be contending for a flag with. The trade period is the best chance to gain some immediate improvement to your side. According to Reid, we seemed to go in with a plan of doing nothing, until the Gibbs thing fell in our laps. Why?

It's all well and good to say we'll have improvement from natural progression, but that improvement coupled with a change or two that give an extra injection of immediate performing talent is probably what was needed, because other clubs are going to have natural progression too. It's not like the Dogs are rolling out senior citizens through the middle.

Nearly everyone else bar Crows fans seem quite happy that they kept him regardless of his family issues. They don't seem to matter when it's a player looking to leave Victoria.
