Patently obvious that your recruiters don't rate this particular draft at all.

Really don't think this is a terrible deal for you guys, just will need to view the big picture over two drafts.

So most likely it looks something like this;

ADE
OUT: Pick 10 (2017), Pick 16 (2017), Pick 30-35 (2018)
IN: Gibbs, Pick 20-25 (2018), Pick 36-40 (2018)

The 4th round picks mean nothing.

So effectively, ONE first round pick, ONE down grade of 4-9 picks (but in a stronger draft so effectively equal i.e. pick 16 2017 = pick 20-25 2018) and one down grade of 1- 5 picks (again stronger draft so actually an upgrade i.e. Pick 36-40 2018 > Pick 30-35 2017).

On the overall basis we are in fact giving up one first round pick. The rest of the deal balances out nicely.

Actually a pretty good deal.

dont have a problem with it. weak draft and we need players now. hawthorn at their peak wouldve done the same. we keep 2 firsts for the better draft and a 2nd rounder that should be low

draft picks are maybe's. gibbs is proven. we need proven
It's funny how everyone says we need to be aggressive at this time of year like the Hawks were in their contending seasons (and they went seasons without first round picks), yet when it actually happens say the future of the club is screwed and we paid too much.

10, 16, 35, 73

For

Gibbs, 22, 38,77

It’s really 10 + slight down grade on 2017 first to 2018 second. If draft quality is to be believed 22 in 2018 worth more than 16 in 2017

In effect pick 10 for Gibbs straight up or maybe even a bit less than 10
That doesn’t sound too bad

I like the big picture here. We now have 2 first rounders for next year + Carlton 2nd which could be pick 20. We could probably package these up to move in to the top 5 and hopefully get rankine or other elite SA talent for next year. Meanwhile picks 10&16 do nothing for us for years. We want to see galluci, Milera, Hampton, pohoke all get games in to them next season.

So let’s look at this, had we done the deal last year:

Lose Galluci and pick 16.

Now we’ve lost 10 & 16 without Gibbs for the 2017 campaign.

No matter what you think of this years trade, that in itself makes it a shocker.

^^^^ Read this.

Justin Reid just got assaulted. Incompetent just like his old man.

Overs.
Pretty well paying the same as they demanded last year. Unless there’s someone else we’re targeting and need to move on to get other stuff done, (can’t see how this can happen as we’ve sold the farm with this years picks for a father son we should’ve had years ago).
If a Vic club had been dudded by a father son pick the AFL would’ve made sure they wouldn’t have to pay overs later.
Compare this to the Motlop compensation and it’s f***ing laughable.
Pick 10 should never have been on the table.

Yep.

I don't mind us going all in. But if we were going to we should have done it last year. All we did was cost ourselves one year of a good player.

Not to mention that Gibbs plays in the 2017 Grand Final and H&A season.

Exactly. Club gets slammed for being conservative. This is a ballsy move and I applaud them for it.

Absolutely mate.

We have SIGNIFICANTLY improved our midfield by trading out picks in a weak draft - while strengthening our position in the 2018 super draft.

We have 2 first rounders next year, potentially a pick in the 19-23 range - so three in the top 25 in a super draft.

Our recruiting staff aren't stupid, if there were 2 guns we could get at 10 and 16 this year, they would have plead their case to the board not to do the deal.

Well done AFC.

I'm quoting this so that more people read it. While the Sky is falling.
